Maris Laksa selected the top Latvian playing abroad in last week's games - Jan 3, 2013

Here is the weekly review of the top performing Latvian players, who play currently abroad.


Maris Laksa

   #1. This week's number one is former international forward Maris Laksa (205-81, college: Providence, currently plays in Estonia). He led BC Rakvere to a victory over one of league's weakest teams Tln Kalev (3-11) crushing them 103-82 in the Estonian KML in Friday night's game. Laksa was MVP of the game. He scored 26 points (!!!) and added 3 assists in 32 minutes on the court. BC Rakvere Tarvas (13-4) is placed first in the KML. It was his team's eighth consecutive victory in a row. They will play only one more game in the Regular Season. And that game will be critical. Laksa is ranked first on the list of the top scorers in the league with 17.1ppg. He also averaged so far 2.9rpg, 1.5apg, 1.4spg, 2FGP: 55.9%(52-93), 3FGP: 42.0% and FT: 75.6% in the 14 games he played so far. Laksa played for the Latvian senior national team ten years ago.

   #2. Second place goes to former international center Andris Biedrins (213-86, currently plays in NBA). He managed to help Golden State Warriors to win against the Philadelphia 76ers (15-18) 96-89 in the NBA last Friday. Biedrins recorded only 3 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. The Golden State Warriors have a solid 22-10 record this season. It was his team's fourth consecutive victory in a row. It's Biedrins' ninth year with the team. This season he averages: 0.6ppg, 3.6rpg, 2FGP: 46.2% and FT: 36.4%. Biedrins played for the Latvian national team in 2009.

   #3. The Latvian player who performed third best last week abroad was former U18 international guard Edgars Cunda (195-84, currently plays in Estonia). He was the main contributor in Valga's victory against the closely-ranked KK Parnu (5-8) 73-63 in the Estonian KML on Friday night. Cunda was the best player in that game. He scored 16 points, grabbed 4 rebounds and dished 5 assists in 34 minutes. Valga/Maks&Moorits (6-7) is placed fourth in the KML. They ended the series of three consecutive loses. There are only two games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game is very crucial. Cunda is currently fourth on the league's list of best passers with 4.4apg. This year his other stats are: 11.6ppg, 6.7rpg, 1.5spg, 2FGP: 41.0%, 3FGP: 20.7% and FT: 74.5% in the 12 games. Cunda played for the Latvian U18 national team eleven years ago.

   #4. Center Raitis Grafs (208-81, college: Valparaiso, currently plays in Estonia) is a teammate of previously mentioned Edgars Cunda and both played together in the last Estonian KML game. Grafs was the major contributor in Valga's victory against the closely-ranked KK Parnu (5-8) 73-63. He recorded a double-double by scoring 13 points and getting 10 rebounds. Grafs belongs to league's best rebounders and is ranked #5. He has very reliable stats this season: 11.3ppg, 7.2rpg, 1.5apg and 1.1spg. Grafs used to play for the Latvian national team back in 2010.

   #5. An experienced former international swingman Juris Umbrasko (197-79, currently plays in Estonia) is a teammate of previously mentioned Maris Laksa and both played together in the last Estonian KML game. Umbrasko contributed to an easy victory against one of league's weakest teams Tln Kalev (3-11) crushing them 103-82. He scored 8 points in 26 minutes. Umbrasko has relatively good stats this year: 13.4ppg, 5.9rpg and 2.2apg in the 13 games. He used to play for the Latvian national team five years ago.

   #6. Guard Armands Skele (192-83, currently plays in Estonia) contributed to Kalev/Cramo's victory against the closely-ranked TTU (6-7) 78-69 in a derby game in the Estonian KML on Sunday night. Skele scored 7 points. BC Kalev/Cramo Tallinn (8-5) is placed third in the KML. His team will play only one more game in the Regular Season. And now that game is quite important. Skele's overall stats this season are: 5.0ppg, 3.0rpg and 1.5apg. He is an international player who is currently on the senior Latvian National Team roster.

International small forward Rihards Kuksiks (197-88, college: Arizona St., currently plays in Spain), who plays in the Spanish ACB could not help Lagun Aro GBC (2-13) to beat Blusens Monbus (8-7). Kuksiks scored 8 points in 20 minutes. The bottom-ranked Lagun Aro GBC lost 60-71 on the road to the much higher-ranked (#8) Blusens Monbus. This year Kuksiks' overall stats are: 6.3ppg and 1.4rpg in the 13 games. He is also Latvian national team player.

   #8. Guard Kristaps Valters (190-81, currently plays in Spain) was not able to help Baloncesto Fuenlabrada (4-11) in their game against Caja Laboral (12-3) in the Spanish ACB. Valters cannot count Sunday's game as one of the best ones. He scored only 2 points and grabbed 5 rebounds in 24 minutes. Baloncesto Fuenlabrada lost 77-84 in Vitoria to the second-ranked Caja Laboral. This year Valters' total stats are: 5.7ppg, 2.3rpg and 3.5apg in the six games. He used to play for the Latvian national team back in 2009.

Former University international guard Martins Kravcenko (192-85, currently plays in Ukraine) was not able to secure a victory for Mykolaiv (11-12) in their game against DniproAzot (9-12) in the Ukrainian Superleague. Kravcenko scored 6 points. Mykolaiv was defeated 92-77 in Dniprodzerzhynsk by the lower-ranked DniproAzot (#11). There are only three games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game will be important. Kravcenko has averaged so far 6.7ppg, 2.1rpg and 1.7apg. He used to play for the Latvian university national team four years ago.

   #10. Forward Agnis Cavars (196-86, currently plays in Sweden) contributed to a Sodertalje Kings' victory against the league leader Sundsvall Dragons (16-3) 76-70 in the Swedish Basketligan last Sunday. He recorded only 3 points in 6 minutes on the court. Sodertalje Kings (11-5) is placed fifth in the Basketligan. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. Cavars has averaged so far 3.8ppg and 1.7rpg in the 15 games. Worth to mention Cavars played also at Eurobasket Summer League, which helped him get the job in pro basketball. He is a former U20 international player as seven years ago he still played for the Latvian national team.

   #11. International power forward Rolands Freimanis (210-88, currently plays in Italy) helped Sutor Montegranaro win their game against the league outsider VL Pesaro 93-78 in the Italian SerieA on Sunday night. Freimanis recorded only 3 points. Freimanis has averaged so far 8.8ppg and 4.0rpg. He plays currently for the Latvian national team.

   #12. International forward Oto Osenieks (203-90, currently plays college basketball in the States) helped Minnesota win their game against the Michigan State University 76-63 in the NCAA in Monday night's game. Osenieks scored only 4 points in 7 minutes on the court. Osenieks has averaged so far 8.8ppg and 4.0rpg in the 11 games. He is also in the roster of the Latvian national team.

   #13. Former U19 international center Aleksejs Rostovs (208-92, currently studies in the States) helped W.Kentucky win their game against the Florida International University 76-63 in the NCAA last Thursday. Rostovs scored only 2 points. Rostovs has averaged so far 8.8ppg and 4.0rpg. He used to play for the Latvian U19 national team two years ago.

   #14. Former U20 international center Davis Rozitis (213-90, is currently at the American university) helped Hawaii win their game against the Cal State - Northridge 74-71 in the NCAA on Saturday night. Rozitis recorded only 2 points and blocked 3 blocks in 8 minutes on the court. Rozitis has averaged so far 8.8ppg and 4.0rpg in the 11 games. He used to play for the Latvian U20 national team back in 2010.

   #15. Former U20 international guard Haralds Karlis (196-91, currently plays college basketball in the States) helped Seton Hall edge the De Paul University 73-72 in the NCAA last Wednesday. He scored 5 points in 19 minutes. Karlis has averaged so far 8.8ppg and 4.0rpg in the 11 games. He used to play for the Latvian U20 national team two years ago.


The list of other players, who all have Latvian passport but never been selected to any of Latvian national teams:

   #1. Martins Provizors (202-C-87, currently plays in Ireland) was the major contributor in a DCU Saints' victory against the league outsider UCD Marian (3-9) 81-65 in a derby game in the Irish Superleague last Sunday. Provizors recorded a double-double by scoring 22 points and getting 17 rebounds. He also added 7 assists, 2 blocks and 3 steals. DCU St.Vincents Dublin (6-6) is placed fourth in the Superleague. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. Provizors is one of the most experienced players in a team as it's his sixth year in DCU Saints' roster. Provizors is ranked third on the list of the best rebounders in the league. This season he has very good stats: 12.3ppg, 12.1rpg, 2.4apg and 1.6bpg.

   #2. Martins Abele (216-C-90, currently plays college basketball in the States), who plays in the NCAA could not help the Duquesne to beat the The Pennsylvania State University. Abele cannot count Saturday's game as one of the best ones. He recorded only 2 points. The Duquesne was defeated 84-74 on the road by the The Pennsylvania State University. Abele has averaged so far 8.8ppg and 4.0rpg.

VEF Riga - Ventspils 78-69 After two years of absence VEF Riga is once again LBL Champion! They didn't struggle and swept higher-ranked Ventspils 4-0 in the final series. Game 4 was without a history. Miasto Szkla Krosno (PLK) agreed terms with 26-year old Latvian international guard Davis Lejasmeiers (192-84kg-91). He moved there from Sodertalje Kings in Swedish Basketligan where he played this season. In 47 Basketligan games he had 10.9ppg, 2.9rpg and 4.0apg. Lejasmeiers helped them to make it to the final.
