Here is the weekly review of the top performing Latvian players, who play currently abroad.

   #1. This week's number one is an international point guard Janis Strelnieks (191-89, currently plays in VTB United League). He was the major contributor in a Spartak St.Petersburg's victory against the sixth-ranked Lietuvos rytas (5-5) crushing them 83-63 in the VTB United League in Sunday night's game. Strelnieks recorded 16 points in 29 minutes on the court. Spartak St.Petersburg (7-2) is placed second in group A. This year Strelnieks averages: 5.6ppg, 1.2rpg, 2.9apg, 2FGP: 33.3%, 3FGP: 33.3% in the nine games he played so far. He is currently a member of the Latvian senior national team.

   #2. Second place goes to an international shooting guard Janis Blums (191-82, currently plays in VTB United League) faced previously mentioned Janis Strelnieks in the VTB United League last game. Blums, who plays in Lithuania. He could not help Lietuvos rytas (5-5) in their last game on Sunday. Despite Blums' very good performance the sixth-placed Lietuvos rytas was badly defeated 83-63 at home by the second-ranked Spartak St.Petersburg in the group A of VTB United League. He was the top scorer with 15 points. Blums also added 3 passes. It's Blums' first season with the team. He has relatively good stats this year: 12.4ppg, 1.6rpg, 2.1apg, 1.5spg, 2FGP: 35.3%, 3FGP: 42.6% and FT: 87.1%. Blums is in the roster of the Latvian senior national team.

   #3. The Latvian player who performed third best last week abroad was an international small forward Davis Bertans (203-92, currently plays in Adriatic League). He contributed to Partizan's victory against the 11th-ranked Cibona (6-10) 74-68 in the Adriatic League on Saturday night. Bertans recorded 10 points in 23 minutes. BC Partizan MT:S Beograd (11-5) is placed third in the Adriatic League. This year Bertans' overall stats are: 8.5ppg, 2.5rpg, 2FGP: 52.6%, 3FGP: 45.8%(27-59) and FT: 71.4% in the 16 games. He is also a member of the Latvian senior national team.

   #4. Forward Maris Laksa (205-81, college: Providence, currently plays in Baltic League) led his Estonian team BC Rakvere to a victory over the closely-ranked Pieno Zvaigzdes (0-1) 93-75 in the Baltic League in Tuesday night's game. Laksa was MVP of the game. He recorded 20 points. BC Rakvere Tarvas (1-0) is placed second in group G. This season Laksa has relatively solid stats: 13.0ppg and 4.4rpg. He used to play for the Latvian national team back in 2003.

Ernests Kalve

   #5. Former international forward Ernests Kalve (200-87, currently plays in Adriatic League), who plays in Hungary was not able to help one of league's weakest teams Szolnok (4-12) in their last game. Despite Kalve's very good performance the bottom-ranked Szolnok lost 69-75 on their home court in Szolnok to the one of league's weakest teams (#13) HKK Siroki WWin. He was the top scorer with 17 points in 27 minutes. This year Kalve's total stats are: 8.6ppg, 3.2rpg and 1.1spg in the 16 games. He used to play for the Latvian national team three years ago.

   #6. An experienced swingman Juris Umbrasko (197-79, currently plays in Baltic League) is a teammate of previously mentioned Maris Laksa and both played together in the last Baltic League game. Umbrasko contributed to an easy victory against the closely-ranked Pieno Zvaigzdes (0-1) 93-75. He recorded 15 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. Umbrasko has reliable stats this season: 13.9ppg, 5.9rpg and 1.5spg. He is a former international player as he played for the Latvian senior team five years ago.

Former international forward Ivars Timermanis (203-82, currently plays in Romania) contributed to an easy victory against one of league's weakest teams CS Farul Constanca (1-15) crushing them 97-67 in the Romanian Division A in Wednesday night's game. Timermanis recorded 15 points and grabbed 6 rebounds in 20 minutes. CSU Asesoft Ploiesti (12-4) is placed fourth in the Division A. There are only two games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. Timermanis' stats this year are: 10.2ppg, 3.3rpg and 1.1apg in the 16 games. He used to play for the Latvian national team six years ago.

   #8. Guard Kristaps Valters (190-81, currently plays in Spain), who plays in the Spanish ACB was not able to secure a victory for Baloncesto Fuenlabrada (4-12) in their last game on Saturday. Despite Valters' good performance Baloncesto Fuenlabrada was defeated 79-74 on the road by the much higher-ranked CAI Zaragoza (#5). He recorded 11 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists. Valters has averaged so far 6.4ppg, 2.6rpg, 3.4apg and 1.1spg. He used to play for the Latvian national team back in 2009.

   #9. International point guard Kaspars Vecvagars (193-93, currently plays in Baltic League) couldn't help Lietkabelis (0-1) in their game against Ventspils (1-0) in the Baltic League. Vecvagars recorded 8 points and added 5 assists in 21 minutes. Lietkabelis (#4) lost 62-73 on their home court in Panevezys to the leading Ventspils in the group E of Baltic League. Vecvagars has averaged so far 6.8ppg, 2.8rpg, 2.5apg and 1.3spg in the 11 games. He is also in the roster of the Latvian national team.

   #10. Center Aleksejs Rostovs (208-92, currently plays college basketball in the States), who plays in the NCAA couldn't help the W.Kentucky (4-2) in their last game on Saturday. Despite Rostovs' very good performance the W.Kentucky (#15) was defeated 75-61 in Jonesboro, AR by the Arkansas State University. He scored 17 points. Rostovs has averaged so far 6.8ppg, 2.8rpg, 2.5apg and 1.3spg. He is a former U19 international player as two years ago he still played for the Latvian national team.

   #11. International point guard Edgars Jeromanovs (186-86, currently plays in Sweden) contributed to an easy victory against the closely-ranked Uppsala Basket 80-65 in the Swedish Basketligan last Friday. Jeromanovs scored 10 points and added 4 passes in 16 minutes. Jeromanovs averaged so far 12.4ppg, 3.1rpg, 4.2apg and 1.4spg in the 19 games. He plays currently for the Latvian national team.

   #12. International forward Oto Osenieks (203-90, currently studies in the States) contributed to an easy victory against the Northwestern University 69-51 in the NCAA in Sunday night's game. Osenieks scored 6 points and grabbed 5 rebounds in 15 minutes. Osenieks has individually a very good year with high stats. He averages: 17.1ppg, 5.7rpg, 2.3apg and 1.6spg in the 15 games. Osenieks is also in the roster of the Latvian national team.

   #13. International guard Armands Skele (192-83, currently plays in Estonia) contributed to Kalev/Cramo's victory against the seventh-ranked KK Parnu 76-71 in the Estonian KML last Friday. He recorded 6 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. Skele has averaged so far 5.3ppg, 4.3rpg and 1.7apg. He is also Latvian national team player.

   #14. Former U18 international guard Edgars Cunda (195-84, currently plays in Estonia) contributed to an easy victory against one of league's weakest teams Tln Kalev crushing them 80-54 in the Estonian KML on Friday night. Cunda recorded 9 points, 8 rebounds and 3 assists in 30 minutes. Cunda is ranked seventh on the list of the best rebounders in the league and also on the list of best passers (fourth place). He has very reliable stats this year: 11.4ppg, 6.8rpg, 4.3apg and 1.5spg in the 13 games. Cunda used to play for the Latvian U18 national team back in 2002.

   #15. Former international swingman Mareks Jurevicus (197-85, currently plays in Italy) contributed to a Prima Veroli's victory against the closely-ranked Tezenis VE 69-64 in the Italian Lega2 (second division) in Sunday night's game. He scored 11 points, grabbed 5 rebounds and dished 3 assists. Jurevicus' stats this season are: 13.9ppg, 4.1rpg, 1.8apg and 1.6spg. He used to play for the Latvian national team two years ago.


The list of other players, who all have Latvian passport but never been selected to any of Latvian national teams:

   #1. Martins Berkis (198-F-85, currently plays in Hungary) led Marso NYKK to a surprising victory over the second-ranked Kaposvari (11-4) 84-75 in the Hungarian A Division on Saturday night. Berkis was the best player in that game. He scored 20 points. Marso NYKK (6-9) is placed ninth in the A Division. Berkis has individually a very good season with high stats. He averages: 17.1ppg, 5.7rpg, 2.3apg and 1.6spg.

   #2. Edmunds Tukiss (200-SF-89, currently plays in Germany) managed to help Dragons Rhoendorf to win against the 12th-ranked TSV Troester (2-11) 72-66 in the German ProB (third division) on Saturday night. Tukiss recorded only 3 points and grabbed 4 rebounds. Dragons Rhoendorf (12-1) is placed first in Group South. Tukiss has averaged so far 9.9ppg and 2.8rpg.

   #3. Martins Abele (216-C-90, currently plays college basketball in the States), who plays in the NCAA could not help the Duquesne (0-1) to beat the Fordham University (1-0). He cannot count Wednesday's game as one of the best ones. Abele scored only 2 points and blocked 3 shots in 11 minutes. The Duquesne lost 75-82 on the road to the Fordham University. Abele has averaged so far 9.9ppg and 2.8rpg in the 12 games he played so far.

   #4. Ugis Promolds (190-G-88, currently plays in Denmark) was not able to help SISU (13-0) in their game against Vaerlose (6-8) in the Danish Ligaen. He cannot count Thursday's game as one of the best ones. Promolds scored only 2 points. The league leader SISU was edged 79-78 at home by the lower-ranked Vaerlose (#5). Promolds has averaged so far 1.4ppg and 1.3rpg.

Rio Natura Monbus Obradoiro CAB (Liga Endesa) signed 20-year old Latvian forward Verners Kohs (203-74kg-97). He played last season at GBA Sparta in 1Liga in Czech Republic. In 21 games he had 13.0ppg and 4.3rpg. Kohs ended the previous (2015-16) season at Tecnyconta Zaragoza. But in only one Liga Endesa game he did not score anything. Valka/Valga (LBL) landed 21-year old Lithuanian point guard Ernestas Bruzas (183-77kg-96). He played most recently at Mazeikiai in Lithuanian NKL league. In 31 games he averaged 10.6ppg, 2.5rpg, 4.2apg and 1.0spg last season. Bruzas also played for Nafta-Uni-Akvaservis Klaipeda (also in NKL) that season where in 6 games he had 3.0ppg, 1.2rpg and 1.0apg. Bruzas has played also professionally in Lithuania for Palanga. Valka/Valga (LBL) kept in their roster 27-year old Estonian forward Robert Peterson (193-88kg-90). It is actually his comeback to Valga as he has played here before. Peterson played last season also at BC Valga-Valka/Maks&Moorits in Estonian Alexela KML. In 25 games he recorded just 2.1ppg and 1.6rpg. The previous (15-16) season Peterson played at BC Rakvere (also in Alexela KML). But in 10 games he averaged only 0.8ppg and 1.1rpg.
