Artis Ate
Second-best Jekabpils (10-8) fell to ninth ranked Liepaja (6-12) in overtime by two points 93-95 on Thursday night. It ended at the same time the four-game winning streak of Jekabpils. It was a good game for Artis Ate who led his team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 20 points and 11 rebounds (went 9 for 9 at the free throw line !!!). Liepaja maintains ninth place with 6-12 record. Newly promoted Jekabpils dropped to the third position with eight games lost. Liepaja will face league's leader Valmiera on the road in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Jekabpils will play against Jurmala.

The most impressive performance of 21th round was 20 points and 20 rebounds by Jurijs Aleksejevs of Jekabpils.

U18 - Turiba 73-82

The game between closely ranked teams ended with tenth ranked Turiba's (5-13) road victory over bottom-ranked U18 (1-10) in Riga 82-73 on Saturday. The guests trailed by 8 points at the halftime before their 52-35 charge in the second half, which allowed them to win the game. It was a good game for forward Matiss Rudmiezis (190-91) who led his team to a victory with 16 points and 7 rebounds. Forward Martins Vinauds (194-91) contributed with 19 points and 6 rebounds for the winners. Guard Kristaps Plavnieks (182-95) answered with 15 points and 7 assists and center Andzejs Pasecniks (211-95) added 15 points and 7 rebounds in the effort for U18. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Turiba maintains tenth place with 5-13 record. U18 lost sixth consecutive game. Newly promoted team stay at the bottom position with ten games lost. Turiba will face league's second-placed Barons kvartals in Riga in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory.

Jurmala - LU 86-67

Everything could happen at the game between two tied teams. Both eighth ranked Jurmala and 6th ranked Latvijas Universitate had identical 8-9 record. This time Jurmala used a home court advantage and smashed the opponent from Riga 86-67 on Saturday night. The game without a history. Jurmala led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. Latvijas Universitate was plagued by 27 personal fouls down the stretch. It was a good game for forward Atis Ozols (199-81) who led his team to a victory with 21 points and 9 rebounds. point guard Davis Coders (188-92) contributed with 15 points and 4 assists for the winners. Four Jurmala players scored in double figures. Guard Zanis Peiners (204-90, agency: Interperformances) answered with 19 points and 5 rebounds and forward Klavs Strazdins (192-93) added 13 points and 8 rebounds in the effort for Latvijas Universitate. Latvijas Universitate's coach rotated twelve players seeing no chance for a win. Jurmala (9-9) moved-up to sixth place. Latvijas Universitate at the other side dropped to the eighth position with ten games lost. Jurmala will face higher ranked Jekabpils (#3) on the road in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Latvijas Universitate will play against Jelgava (#7) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

Second-best Jekabpils (10-8) fell to ninth ranked Liepaja (6-12) in overtime by two points 93-95 on Thursday night. It ended at the same time the four-game winning streak of Jekabpils. The hosts started the game with a very strong first quarter 23-13. But Jekabpils won third quarter 22-20. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening, at least not yet. The game turned upside-down in the last quarter, where Jekabpils used huge pressure winning it 28-18 getting a tie at the end of regular time. They lost eventually overtime period 14-16. Liepaja made 29-of-36 free shots (80.6 percent) during the game. Strangely Jekabpils outrebounded Liepaja 48-33 including a 26-6 advantage in offensive rebounds. Jekabpils were plagued by 29 personal fouls down the stretch. It was a good game for guard Artis Ate (191-89) who led his team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 20 points and 11 rebounds (went 9 for 9 at the free throw line !!!). Arturs Bricis (196-92) contributed with 21 points and 6 rebounds for the winners. The former international center Jurijs Aleksejevs (202-85) answered with a double-double by scoring 20 points and 20 rebounds and American point guard P.J. Hill jr. (182-87, college: Ohio St.) added 23 points and 4 steals (went 8 for 8 at the free throw line) in the effort for Jekabpils. Four Liepaja and five Jekabpils players scored in double figures. Liepaja maintains ninth place with 6-12 record. Newly promoted Jekabpils dropped to the third position with eight games lost. Liepaja will face league's leader Valmiera on the road in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Jekabpils will play against Jurmala.

The game between closely ranked teams ended with fifth ranked Barons kvartals' (10-7) home victory over 6th ranked Jelgava (8-9) in Riga 90-79 on Thursday. The game was mostly controlled by Barons kvartals. Jelgava was better in second period 26-23. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They outrebounded Jelgava 52-22 including a 16-3 advantage in offensive rebounds. Barons kvartals looked well-organized offensively handing out 23 assists. It was a good game for forward Maris Gulbis (202-85, agency: Players Group) who led his team to a victory with 27 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists. American forward Tyler Cain (203-88, college: S.Dakota) contributed with a double-double by scoring 15 points, 17 rebounds and 4 assists for the winners. Four Barons kvartals players scored in double figures. Guard Kristaps Kanbergs (190-88) answered with 19 points and 4 assists and guard Sandis Silavs (195-88) added 11 points and 4 assists in the effort for Jelgava. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Barons kvartals have a solid series of three victories in a row. They moved-up to second place. Jelgava at the other side dropped to the seventh position with nine games lost. Barons kvartals will face Turiba (#10) at home in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Jelgava will play against Latvijas Universitate in Riga and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

Nevezis Kedainiai (LKL) added to their roster 24-year old Latvian small forward Roberts Stumbris (199-98kg-93). He played last season at BK Jekabpils in Latvian LBL league. In 32 games he had 14.1ppg, 5.8rpg and 1.5apg. A very spectacular season in his career as he was named to Eurobasket.com All-Latvian League Honorable Mention and to the All-Star Game. Defending champion Joensuun Kataja Basket (Korisliiga) landed 28-year old American point guard Damier Pitts (177-80kg-89, college: Marshall, agency: Inception Sports).
