We bring you last week's top performances from Latvians who are playing abroad and who all have had prior experience of national team duties at youth or senior level.


Anete Jekabsone-Zogota

   #1. This week's number one is former international shooting guard Anete Jekabsone-Zogota (177-83, currently plays in Russia). She contributed to an easy victory against one of league's weakest teams Energy Ivanovo (2-9) crushing them 86-56 in the Russian PBL in Saturday night's game. Jekabsone-Zogota scored 9 points and added 4 assists in 30 minutes on the court. UMMC Ekaterinburg (10-1) is placed first in the PBL. This year Jekabsone-Zogota averages: 9.7ppg, 1.3rpg, 2.7apg, 2FGP: 42.9%, 3FGP: 43.8% in the three games she played so far. She played for the Latvian senior national team four years ago.

Aija Putnina

   #2. Second place goes to an international power forward Aija Putnina (191-88, agency: Josep and Nicolas, currently plays in Spain), who plays in the Spanish LFB. Putnina could not help Navarra Pamplona (6-6) in their last game on Saturday. Despite her very good performance Navarra Pamplona was defeated 61-53 on the road by the lower-ranked Gran Canaria (#9). Putnina recorded a double-double by scoring 20 points and getting 11 rebounds. Putnina belongs to league's top scorers (ranked #4) and also on the list of best rebounders (second place). She has individually a very good season with high stats. Putnina averages: 16.7ppg, 8.7rpg, 2FGP: 44.1%, 3FGP: 27.0% and FT: 82.4%. She is in the roster of the Latvian senior national team.

   #3. The Latvian player who performed third best last week abroad was an international center Zane Teilane-Tamane (200-83, agency: LBM Management, college: W.Illinois, currently plays in Russia). Teilane-Tamane was not able to help Nadezhda Orenburg (7-4) in their game against Vologda-Chevakata (5-6) in the Russian PBL. She scored 6 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in 20 minutes. Nadezhda Orenburg lost 61-73 on the opponent's court to the lower-ranked (#6) Vologda-Chevakata. This year Teilane-Tamane's overall stats are: 9.5ppg, 7.7rpg, 1.5apg, 1.2spg, 2FGP: 56.8%(42-74) and FT: 83.3% in the 11 games. She is also a member of the Latvian senior national team.

   #4. An experienced forward Gunta Basko (181-80, also represented by Josep and Nicolas, college: Siena, currently plays in France) was not able to secure a victory for Nantes Reze (9-8) in their game against Lyon (11-6) in the French LFB. Basko scored 8 points and grabbed 4 rebounds. Nantes Reze was badly defeated 75-57 on the opponent's court by the higher-ranked Lyon (#4). Basko has relatively good stats this season: 10.8ppg, 5.5rpg, 1.4apg and 1.1spg. She used to play for the Latvian national team back in 2011.

   #5. International center Liga Surkusa (194-91, currently plays in Italy), who plays in the Italian A2 (12th division) couldn't help Broni (7-9) in their last game on Saturday. Despite Surkusa's very good performance the eighth-placed Broni was defeated 56-52 in Venezia by the leading Umana Reyer in the North group. She was the top scorer with 20 points. Surkusa also added 6 rebounds. It's Surkusa's first season with the team. Surkusa is currently second on the league's list of best blockers. Her total stats this season are: 9.4ppg, 8.9rpg, 1.4bpg and 1.4spg. Surkusa plays currently for the Latvian national team.

   #6. Center Anita Teilane (196-85, currently plays in Bulgaria) was the major contributor in a 1-point Haskovo 2012's victory against the closely-ranked Rilski Sportist (9-4) 64-63 in the Bulgarian NBL in Wednesday night's game. She had a double-double by scoring 16 points and getting 14 rebounds. Teilane also added 3 blocks in 40 minutes. It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. Haskovo 2012 (7-8) is placed fourth in the NBL. This year Teilane has relatively solid stats: 14.0ppg, 11.3rpg, 1.3apg and 3.3bpg in the three games. She is a former international player as she played for the Latvian senior team six years ago.

   #7. Former University international power forward Lauma Reke (185-86, college: St.Peter's, currently plays in Italy) led T. La Spezia to a victory against the leader Ragusa (14-1) 65-53 in the Italian A2 (12th division) last Sunday. Reke recorded a double-double by scoring 13 points and getting 14 rebounds. It was the game of the round between two top 3 ranked teams in group South. Termocarispe La Spezia (12-2) is placed second. It was her team's eighth consecutive victory in a row. There are only three games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. Reke is ranked seventh on the list of the top scorers in the league. This season she has very high stats. Reke averages: 16.1ppg, 7.8rpg and 1.8spg. She used to play for the Latvian university national team six years ago.

   #8. Guard Elina Babkina (173-89, another player represented by LBM Management, currently plays in Czech Republic) contributed to an easy victory against the closely-ranked Kara Trutnov (11-8) crushing them 88-58 in the Czech Republic ZBL on Saturday night. Babkina recorded 6 points in 18 minutes. It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. ZVVZ USK Praha (18-1) is placed first in the ZBL. It was her team's third consecutive victory in a row. There are only three games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game is very crucial. This year Babkina averages only 4.0ppg in the two games. She used to play for the Latvian national team back in 2011.

U20 international forward Sabine Dukate (174-93, currently plays in Lithuania) contributed to an easy victory against the closely-ranked Ruta Siauliai (6-10) 75-59 in the Lithuanian LMKL in Saturday night's game. Dukate recorded 12 points. Suduva-Mantinga Marijampole (10-6) is placed fourth in the LMKL. Dukate's total stats this season are: 8.1ppg, 2.8rpg and 1.4apg. She is also in the roster of the Latvian U20 national team.

   #10. Power forward Dace Brumermane (187-81, another player represented by Josep and Nicolas, currently plays in France), who plays in the French LF2 (12th division) couldn't help Dunkerque (5-10) in their last game. Despite Brumermane's very good performance Dunkerque was edged 61-60 at home by the higher-ranked (#5) Laveyron. She was the top scorer with 21 points. Brumermane also added 9 rebounds in 38 minutes. They ended the series of three consecutive victories. Brumermane is one of the most experienced players in a team as it's her sixth year in Dunkerque's roster. She is currently fourth on the league's list of top scorers with 16.3ppg. This year Brumermane also averages: 7.6rpg and 1.1apg in the 12 games. She is a former international player as twelve years ago she still played for the Latvian senior national team.

   #11. International center Aija Brumermane (191-86, agency: Regeneracom Sports, currently plays in Hungary) led Bacsbasket to a victory over the sixth-ranked MBK Eurl.Vasas 72-53 in the Hungarian A Division on Sunday night. Brumermane was MVP of the game. She scored 11 points, had 5 rebounds and dished 3 assists. Brumermane has reliable stats this season: 10.9ppg, 6.0rpg and 1.7apg. She plays currently for the Latvian national team.

   #12. Former international forward Ieva Veinberga (183-84, currently plays in Lithuania) is a teammate of previously mentioned Sabine Dukate and both played together in the last Lithuanian LMKL game. Veinberga contributed to an easy victory against the closely-ranked Ruta Siauliai 75-59. She recorded 8 points and grabbed 5 rebounds in 23 minutes. This year Veinberga's total stats are: 7.3ppg, 4.2rpg and 1.1spg in the 13 games. She used to play for the Latvian national team back in 2011.

   #13. Former U18 international center Ieva Kulite (191-88, currently plays in Germany) contributed to an easy victory against the ninth-ranked Rotenburg/Scheessel 78-62 in the German DBBL last Saturday. Kulite recorded 12 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. She averaged so far 10.9ppg and 7.8rpg. Kulite used to play for the Latvian U18 national team seven years ago.

   #14. International power forward Liene Jansone (192-81, college: Siena, currently plays in Turkey) couldn't help Tarsus Bld in their game against Besiktas in the Turkish TKBL. She scored 6 points in 20 minutes. Her team was badly defeated by 17 points 81-64. Jansone has averaged so far 6.0ppg and 3.1rpg in the nine games. She plays currently for the Latvian national team.

   #15. Former U18 international swingman Eva Pavlovska (176-89, currently plays in Sweden) contributed to an easy victory against the closely-ranked 08 Stockholm crushing them 99-57 in the Swedish Damligan in Wednesday night's game. Pavlovska recorded 12 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists. She averaged so far 11.0ppg, 5.8rpg, 2.8apg and 1.9spg. Pavlovska used to play for the Latvian U18 national team seven years ago.


One more player who has never been selected to any of national teams, but has Latvian passport:

   #1. Experienced Rima Valentiene (170-PG-78, currently plays in Lithuania) managed to help Kibirkstis-Tiche-IKI Vilnius in a victory against the closely-ranked Sirenos (11-5) 73-60 in the Lithuanian LMKL last Friday. Valentiene recorded 5 points, 7 assists and 3 steals in 25 minutes. It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. Kibirkstis-Tiche-IKI Vilnius (15-1) is placed first in the LMKL. It was her team's fifth consecutive victory in a row. It's Valentiene's first season with the team. This year her total stats are: 5.7ppg, 2.9rpg, 2.7apg and 1.4spg in the 16 games she played so far.

36-year old forward Gunta Basko-Melnbarde (181-F-80) had a great game in the last round for league's best team TTT Riga and receives a Eurobasket.com Player of the Week award for round 9 (Second Stage). She had the game-high 20 points adding seven rebounds and nine assists for TTT Riga in her team's victory, helping them to outclass Vega 1/Liepaja (#3, 5-7) with 57-point margin 119-62. The Second Stage in NBL just ended. An interesting game for TTT Riga (11-1) which played road game in Liepaja against 3rd placed Vega 1 (5-7). First ranked TTT Riga had an easy win 119-62. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Vega 1. The game without a history. TTT Riga led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter.
