LSBL Round 17: Winless Tartu U. loses another game - Jan 31, 2013

Bottom-ranked Tartu U. (0-13) is still winless. This time they could not use their home court advantage losing their 13th consecutive match to eighth ranked Audentes SG/N. (6-8) 103-64 on Wednesday evening. The game was mostly controlled by Audentes SG/N.. Tartu U. managed to win third quarter 21-18. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They made 36-of-45 free shots (80.0 percent) during the game, while Tartu U. only scored eight points from the stripe. Audentes SG/N. forced 21 Tartu U. turnovers and outrebounded them 50-29 including a 31-15 advantage in defensive rebounds. 37 personal fouls committed by Tartu U. helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. Estonian center Trine Kasemagi (190-95) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 30 points and 20 rebounds for the winners and Estonian center Susanna Koert (195-96) chipped in 14 points, 13 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals. Estonian forward Kadri Uigra (183-97) responded with 12 points and 9 rebounds. Tartu U.'s coach Kaire Asi gave up on the game allowing to play ten players seeing no chance for a win. Audentes SG/N. maintains eighth place with 6-8 record. Tartu U. at the other side still closes the standings with 13 games lost. Audentes SG/N. are looking forward to face league's leader Cesis on the road in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Tartu U. will play against the league's second-placed TTT Riga (#2) and will have a slim chance for a victory.
The game in Riga was also worth to mention about. Fifth ranked Liepajas (9-4) played at the court of 6th ranked TTT Juniores (6-9). Liepajas managed to secure a 9-point victory 63-54. American center Joncelyn Peterkin (187-89, college: Point Park) nailed a double-double by scoring 13 points and 16 rebounds for the winning side and Alise Piterniece accounted for 17 points and 6 steals. Guard Kate Aizsila (172-94) came up with 17 points for TTT Juniores in the defeat. Liepajas have an impressive series of five victories in a row. They maintain fifth place with 9-4 record. TTT Juniores at the other side dropped to the seventh position with nine games lost. Liepajas will play against Tallina U. (#6) in Tallinn in the next round. TTT Juniores will have a break next round.

The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Eclex Tallinn maintains third place with 12-2 record behind leader Cesis. Latvijas Universitate lost their sixth game in a row. They keep the eleventh position with 12 games lost. Eclex Tallinn's supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will face at home their local rival from Tallinn .

In the last two games of round 17 Audentes SG/N. was destroyed by RTU-Merks on the opponent's court 83-58. LU was outscored by Audentes SG/N. in a home game 46-69.



TTT Juniores - Liepajas 54-63

The game in Riga was also worth to mention about. Fifth ranked Liepajas (9-4) played at the court of 6th ranked TTT Juniores (6-9). Liepajas managed to secure a 9-point victory 63-54. The guests were already 18 points ahead after 3 quarters before a 19-10 TTT Juniores' run in the last quarter cut the lead to 63-54 at the end of the game. Liepajas dominated on the defensive end, holding TTT Juniores to just 6 points in second quarter. They also forced 21 TTT Juniores turnovers. American center Joncelyn Peterkin (187-89, college: Point Park) nailed a double-double by scoring 13 points and 16 rebounds for the winning side and forward Alise Piterniece (180-88) accounted for 17 points and 6 steals. Eclex Tallinn led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. They dominated on the defensive end, holding Latvijas Universitate to just 7 points in first and third quarters and to 14 points in second half. Eclex Tallinn held Latvijas Universitate to an opponent 12.9 percent shooting from the field compared to 48.3 percent accuracy of the winners and made 19-of-23 free shots (82.6 percent) during the game. The hosts trailed by 3 points after first quarter, but they stormed back to get the 15-point lead at the halftime and eventually won the game 83-58. RTU-Merks dominated on the defensive end, holding Audentes SG/N. to just 5 points in second quarter. RTU-Merks forced 21 Audentes SG/N. turnovers. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 25 assists. The best player for the winners was forward Laura Audere (178-84) who scored 30 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists.
