Here is the weekly review of the top performing Latvian players, who play currently abroad.


Zane Teilane-Tamane

   #1. This week's number one is an international center Zane Teilane-Tamane (200-83, agency: LBM Management, college: W.Illinois, currently plays in Euroleague). She led her Russian team Nadezhda Orenburg to a victory over the sixth-ranked MKB Euroleasing (3-9) 74-68 in the Euroleague in Wednesday night's game. Teilane-Tamane was MVP of the game. She recorded 16 points and grabbed 8 rebounds in 28 minutes on the court. Nadezhda Orenburg (7-4) is placed fourth in group B. Teilane-Tamane's team will play only one more game in the Euroleague Regular Season. And that game will be critical. This year Teilane-Tamane averages: 8.8ppg, 8.6rpg, 2FGP: 56.6%(43-76) and FT: 64.7% in the 11 games she played so far. She is currently a member of the Latvian senior national team.

Aija Putnina

   #2. Second place goes to an international power forward Aija Putnina (191-88, agency: Josep and Nicolas, currently plays in Spain). Putnina was the main contributor in an Navarra Pamplona's victory against the league outsider Socinsa Bembibre (1-12) crushing them 66-39 in the Spanish LFB last Saturday. She was the best player in that game. Putnina recorded a double-double by scoring 22 points and getting 10 rebounds. She also added and 3 steals. UNB Obenasa Navarra Pamplona (7-6) is placed fourth in the LFB. It's Putnina's first season with the team. Putnina is ranked third on the list of the top scorers in the league and also on the list of best rebounders (second place). She has individually a very good season with high stats. Putnina averages: 17.2ppg, 8.8rpg, 1.2spg, 2FGP: 47.1%, 3FGP: 28.2% and FT: 83.3%. She is in the roster of the Latvian senior national team.

Aija Brumermane

   #3. The Latvian player who performed third best last week abroad was an international center Aija Brumermane (191-86, agency: Regeneracom Sports, currently plays in Hungary). Brumermane contributed to an easy victory against the sixth-ranked MBK Eurl.Vasas (2-21) crushing them 85-51 in the Hungarian A Division in Thursday night's game. She was the top player that evening. Brumermane recorded 20 points and grabbed 4 rebounds. Bacsbasket Kft. Baja (18-4) is placed first in Places 9-14 group. Brumermane has relatively good stats this season: 11.4ppg, 5.9rpg, 1.6apg, 1.1spg, 2FGP: 61.3%(73-119) and FT: 54.9%. She is also a member of the Latvian senior national team.

   #4. Power forward Liene Jansone (192-81, college: Siena, currently plays in Turkey) contributed to an easy victory against the ninth-ranked Botas (7-8) 74-58 in the Turkish TKBL last Sunday. Jansone scored 9 points and grabbed 4 rebounds in 17 minutes. Tarsus Belediyesi (10-5) is placed fourth in the TKBL. This year Jansone's overall stats are: 6.0ppg and 3.1rpg in the nine games. She is also Latvian national team player.

Former international forward Ieva Veinberga (183-84, currently plays in Lithuania) contributed to a 1-point Suduva's victory against one of league's weakest teams Utena (3-15) 63-62 in the Lithuanian LMKL on Saturday night. Veinberga was the top player that evening. She scored 11 points and grabbed 5 rebounds. Suduva-Mantinga Marijampole (12-6) is placed fourth in the LMKL. Veinberga's total stats this season are: 7.2ppg, 4.1rpg and 1.1spg. She used to play for the Latvian national team two years ago.

Center Anita Teilane (196-85, currently plays in Bulgaria) contributed to a 2-point Haskovo 2012's victory against the closely-ranked Dunav 8806 (12-4) 59-57 in the Bulgarian NBL in Saturday night's game. Teilane was the top player that evening. She recorded 18 points, 7 rebounds and 3 blocks in 40 minutes. It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. Haskovo 2012 (8-8) is placed fourth in the NBL. It was her team's third consecutive victory in a row. This year Teilane has relatively solid stats: 15.0ppg, 10.3rpg, 1.5apg and 3.3bpg in the four games. She is a former international player as she played for the Latvian senior team six years ago.

   #7. International guard Kristine Karklina (175-83, also represented by Regeneracom Sports, currently plays in Turkey), who plays in the Turkish TKBL could not help Ceyhan Bld (7-8) in their last game on Saturday. Despite Karklina's very good performance Ceyhan Bld was defeated 92-77 on the road by the one of league's weakest teams Besiktas (#13). She was the second best scorer with 16 points (went 5 for 5 at the free throw line). Karklina's total stats this season are: 8.8ppg, 1.7rpg, 2.1apg and 1.3spg. She is also Latvian national team player.

   #8. Power forward Lauma Reke (185-86, college: St.Peter's, currently plays in Italy) contributed to a T. La Spezia's victory against the tenth-ranked Ancona (5-8) 84-73 in the Italian A2 (12th division) on Sunday night. Reke scored 14 points and grabbed 9 rebounds in 33 minutes. Termocarispe La Spezia (14-2) is placed second in South group. It was her team's tenth consecutive victory in a row. They will play only one more game in the Regular Season. And now that game is very crucial. Reke has very impressive stats this year: 15.4ppg, 7.7rpg and 1.7spg in the 16 games. She used to play for the Latvian university national team back in 2007.

Former U18 international center Ieva Kulite (191-88, currently plays in Germany) helped Wildcats Wolfenbuettel win their game against the closely-ranked Heli Girls (9-5) 74-64 in the German DBBL in Saturday night's game. Kulite scored 14 points and grabbed 9 rebounds. BC Wildcats Wolfenbuettel (10-4) is placed third in the DBBL. It was her team's third consecutive victory in a row. Kulite has reliable stats this season: 11.2ppg and 7.9rpg. She used to play for the Latvian U18 national team seven years ago.

   #10. Forward Sabine Dukate (174-93, currently plays in Lithuania) is a teammate of previously mentioned Ieva Veinberga. But that was another game of her team in Lithuanian LMKL which we would like to mention. Dukate helped Suduva win their game against the closely-ranked Fortuna (13-5) 65-56. She scored 7 points in 34 minutes. It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. Suduva-Mantinga Marijampole (12-6) is placed fourth in the LMKL. This year Dukate's total stats are: 8.1ppg, 2.6rpg and 1.4apg in the 18 games. She is U20 international player who is currently on the Latvian National Team roster.

   #11. International center Liga Surkusa (194-91, currently plays in Italy) helped Broni win their game against the 11th-ranked Valmadrera 76-72 in the Italian A2 (12th division) on Wednesday night. Surkusa scored 12 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. Surkusa is currently second on the league's list of best blockers. She has averaged so far 9.3ppg, 8.8rpg, 1.3bpg and 1.4spg. Surkusa plays currently for the Latvian national team.

   #12. Former U18 international swingman Eva Pavlovska (176-89, currently plays in Sweden) helped Udominate win their game against the league leader IK Eos crushing them 91-71 in the Swedish Damligan in Saturday night's game. She scored 12 points, grabbed 6 rebounds and dished 3 assists in 29 minutes. Pavlovska's stats this year are: 11.1ppg, 5.8rpg, 2.8apg and 1.8spg in the 17 games. She used to play for the Latvian U18 national team back in 2006.

   #13. Former U20 international center Zenta Melnika (197-91, agency: FCM, currently plays in Romania) was not able to help one of league's weakest teams Alba Iulia in their game against Satu Mare in the Romanian Liga Nationala. Melnika cannot count Saturday's game as one of the best ones. She recorded only 3 points. Her team was defeated 76-65. Melnika has averaged so far 5.1ppg and 3.0rpg. She used to play for the Latvian U20 national team three years ago.

   #14. International guard Baiba Eglite (179-89, college: UTEP, currently plays in Czech Republic) was not able to secure a victory for Lokomotiva Karlovy Vary in their game against Sokol Hradec Kralove in the Czech Republic ZBL. Eglite cannot count Saturday's game as one of the best ones. She scored only 3 points in 13 minutes. Her team lost 63-70. Eglite has averaged so far 5.3ppg and 3.3rpg in the 20 games. She plays currently for the Latvian national team.


One more player who has never been selected to any of national teams, but has Latvian passport:

   #1. Experienced Rima Valentiene (170-PG-78, currently plays in Lithuania), who plays in the Lithuanian LMKL could not help Kibirkstis-Tiche (16-2) in their last game. Despite Valentiene's good performance the league leader Kibirkstis-Tiche lost 73-82 on the road to the lower-ranked (#3) Fortuna. She scored 11 points, had 7 rebounds and dished 7 assists in 40 minutes. It was Kibirkstis-Tiche's first loss after six consecutive victories. Valentiene is currently fifth on the list of best passers with 3.1apg. This year her other stats are: 6.2ppg, 3.2rpg and 1.3spg in the 18 games she played so far.

TTT Riga and Vega 1/Liepaja reach LSBL Finals beating their opponents in the semifinal clashes. TTT Riga beat TTT Juniores 109-38 dominating the whole game. Ruta Veidere (188-C-94) top-scored for the winners with 19 points and Gunta Basko-Melnbarde (181-F-80, college: Siena) delivered 18. Marianna Kavina ended up with 8 points in the losing effort. Vega 1/Liepaja meanwhile edged RSU 72-61. Ilze Jakobsone (168-G-94) stepped up with 18 points and Ieva Vitola (187-F-85) followed her with 13.    [read more]
