LBL Round 25: No surprise as #1 Barons kvartals defeat U18 - Feb 4, 2013

LBL top team - Barons kvartals (14-7) had no problems winning another game on Monday. This time they crushed eleventh ranked U18 (1-12) in Riga 92-64. The game without a history. Barons kvartals led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. They dominated down low during the game scoring 60 of its points in the paint compared to U18's 22. Barons kvartals forced 19 U18 turnovers and outrebounded them 47-28 including a 33-22 advantage in defensive rebounds. 25 personal fouls committed by U18 helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. Forward Andris Epners (198-92) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 21 points and 16 rebounds for the winners and center Jekabs Rozitis (205-86) chipped in 14 points and 15 rebounds. At the losing side center Andzejs Pasecniks (211-95) responded with 14 points and 6 rebounds. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Barons kvartals have an impressive series of seven victories in a row. They maintain first place with 14-7 record. U18 lost eighth consecutive game. Newly promoted team stay at the bottom position with 12 games lost. Barons kvartals are looking forward to face league's second-placed Valmiera at home in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. U18 will have a break next round.
The game in Riga was also worth to mention about. Third ranked Valmiera (13-8) played at the court of 8th ranked Latvijas Universitate (8-14). Valmiera defeated Latvijas Universitate 93-83. Forward Janis Berzins (202-93, agency: Players Group) nailed 25 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists for the winning side and Artjoms Butjankovs accounted for 10 points and 13 rebounds. Guard Kristaps Dargais (198-90) came up with a double-double by scoring 19 points, 10 rebounds and 7 assists for Latvijas Universitate in the defeat. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Valmiera moved-up to second place, which they share with Jekabpils. Latvijas Universitate at the other side keeps the eighth position with 14 games lost. Valmiera will play against league's leader Barons kvartals in Riga in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. Latvijas Universitate will play at home against Turiba (#10) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
9th ranked Liepaja (7-15) was outscored at home by fourth ranked Ventspils (11-1) with the biggest margin this round 107-67 on Saturday night. Ronalds Zakis fired 17 points for the winners. Ventspils' coach Roberts Stelmahers felt very confident that he used entire bench and allowed the starting five to rest. Artis Ate produced 23 points and 5 rebounds for lost side. The victory was the eighth consecutive win for Ventspils. They maintain fourth place with 11-1 record. Loser Liepaja keeps the ninth position with 15 games lost. They share it with Turiba. Ventspils will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Liepaja will play against Jekabpils (#3) and hope to secure a win.

In the last game of round 25 Turiba lost to Jelgava on the opponent's court 80-87.
The most impressive stats of the last round was 28 points and 11 rebounds by Edgars Krumins of Jelgava.

Jelgava - Turiba 87-80

Very expected game when 10th ranked Turiba (7-15) was defeated on the road by sixth ranked Jelgava (10-10) 87-80 on Saturday. The hosts started the game with a very strong first quarter 34-22. But Turiba won second period 15-12. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Swingman Edgars Krumins (194-86) fired a double-double by scoring 28 points and 11 rebounds for the winners. American guard Shedrick Haynes (182-88, college: Tarleton St.) chipped in 15 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists. Center Guntis Sipolins (206-93) produced a double-double by scoring 14 points and 13 rebounds and forward Matiss Rudmiezis (190-91) added 20 points respectively for lost side. Four Turiba players scored in double figures. Jelgava maintains sixth place with 10-10 record. Loser Turiba dropped to the ninth position with 15 games lost. They share it with Liepaja. Jelgava will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Turiba will play against Latvijas Universitate (#8) in Riga and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

9th ranked Liepaja (7-15) was outscored at home by fourth ranked Ventspils (11-1) with the biggest margin this round 107-67 on Saturday night. The game without a history. Ventspils led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. They dominated down low during the game scoring 64 of its points in the paint compared to Liepaja's 34 and made 19-of-22 free shots (86.4 percent) during the game. Ventspils had a 22-11 advantage in offensive rebounds. It was a great shooting night for Ventspils especially from behind the arc, where they had solid 53.3 percentage. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 25 assists comparing to just 7 passes made by Liepaja's players. The former international power forward Ronalds Zakis (207-87) fired 17 points for the winners. International forward Janis Timma (201-92, agency: FCM) chipped in 12 points. Four Ventspils players scored in double figures. Ventspils' coach Roberts Stelmahers felt very confident that he used entire bench and allowed the starting five to rest. AE Doxa Lefkadas (A2) agreed terms with 27-year old Latvian center Davis Rozitis (215-109kg-90, college: Hawaii). He played last season at Barons Riga in Latvian LBL league. In 25 games he had 10.0ppg, 7.8rpg, 1.5apg, 1.0spg and 1.2bpg. Rozitis helped them to make it to the semifinals. BK Ogre (LBL) confirmed in their roster 25-year old point guard Marcis Vitols (183-88kg-92). He has played there for the last two seasons. In 30 LBL games he had 9.8ppg, 2.7rpg, 4.9apg and 1.0spg last season. Vitols also played 11 games in Baltic League where he recorded 10.5ppg, 2.6rpg, 3.3apg and 1.1spg.
