LBL Round 26: Leader Barons kvartals lose to Valmiera - Feb 13, 2013

The most crucial game of the last round was a loss of Barons kvartals (14-8) in Riga on Wednesday night. Hosts were defeated by Valmiera (14-8) 87-74. It ended at the same time the seven-game winning streak of Barons kvartals. It was a key game for the top position in the league as both teams had the same 13-8 record before this meeting. The game was mostly controlled by Valmiera. Barons kvartals managed to win second period 22-20. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Valmiera made 22-of-28 free shots (78.6 percent) during the game. 26 personal fouls committed by Barons kvartals helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. The best player for the winners was forward Janis Berzins (202-93, agency: Players Group) who scored 20 points and 8 rebounds. The former international guard Raimonds Gabrans (185-84) chipped in 15 points and 5 steals. Forward Maris Gulbis (202-85, agency: Players Group) produced 24 points for the hosts. Barons kvartals' coach Martins Gulbis rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Valmiera keeps a position of league leader, which they share with defeated Barons kvartals. Valmiera is looking forward to face Jurmala (#8) at home in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Barons kvartals will play against Jelgava (#6) and are hoping to win this game.
Very important is a home loss of third ranked Jekabpils (13-9) against ninth ranked Liepaja (8-15) on Saturday night. Host Jekabpils were defeated by Liepaja in a tough game in Jekabpils 88-95. It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of Jekabpils. Nigerian-Russian center Aleksey Adediran (204-82, college: Binghamton) orchestrated the victory by scoring 17 points. Pierce Caldwell contributed with 16 points for the winners. Liepaja's coach Guntis Endzels allowed to play the deep bench players saving starting five for next games. The former international point guard Rinalds Sirsnins (186-85) replied with 27 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists for Jekabpils. Liepaja maintains ninth position with 8-15 record. Newly promoted Jekabpils keep the third place with nine games lost. Liepaja will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Jekabpils will play on the road against Turiba and hope to get back on the winning track.

Latvijas Universitate will meet higher ranked Ventspils (#4) on the road in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. Jurmala will play against the league's leader Valmiera (#1) and will have a slim chance for a victory.

LU - Jurmala 84-77

The game in Riga was also quite interesting. 7th ranked Jurmala (9-13) played at the court of eighth ranked Latvijas Universitate (10-14). Latvijas Universitate outrebounded Jurmala 44-26 including a 32-17 advantage in defensive rebounds. Guard Zanis Peiners (204-90, agency: Interperformances) scored 22 points and 7 rebounds to lead the charge for the winners and guard Kristaps Dargais (198-90) chipped in 12 points and 12 rebounds during the contest. Forward Atis Ozols (199-81) responded with 14 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists and point guard Davis Coders (188-92) scored 15 points and 5 assists. Jekabpils - Liepaja 88-95

Very important is a home loss of third ranked Jekabpils (13-9) against ninth ranked Liepaja (8-15) on Saturday night. Host Jekabpils were defeated by Liepaja in a tough game in Jekabpils 88-95. It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of Jekabpils. The guests were tied after three quarters but managed to speed up in last quarter eventually winning the game. Liepaja forced 21 Jekabpils turnovers. Strangely Jekabpils outrebounded Liepaja 36-24 including 24 on the defensive glass. Jekabpils were plagued by 29 personal fouls down the stretch. Nigerian-Russian center Aleksey Adediran (204-82, college: Binghamton) orchestrated the victory by scoring 17 points. American guard Pierce Caldwell (191-88, college: Incarnate Word, agency: Alti Sport) contributed with 16 points for the winners. Caldwell is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market. Liepaja's coach Guntis Endzels allowed to play the deep bench players saving starting five for next games.
