Here is the weekly review of the top performing Latvian players, who play currently abroad.


Janis Blums

   #1. This week's number one is an international shooting guard Janis Blums (191-82, currently plays in VTB United League). He was the major contributor in a Lietuvos rytas' victory against the eighth-ranked Kalev/Cramo (3-11) crushing them 95-73 in the VTB United League in Sunday night's game. Blums scored 19 points and grabbed 4 rebounds in 23 minutes on the court. Lietuvos Rytas Vilnius (8-6) is placed fifth in group A. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. There are only four games left until the end of the VTB United League Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. It's Blums' first season with the team. He has relatively good stats this year: 12.0ppg, 1.9rpg, 2.3apg, 1.1spg, 2FGP: 39.1%, 3FGP: 44.9% and FT: 86.8% in the 12 games he played so far. Blums is currently a member of the Latvian senior national team.

   #2. Second place goes to an international point guard Janis Strelnieks (191-89, currently plays in VTB United League). He managed to help Spartak St.Petersburg to win against the tenth-ranked Azovmash (2-12) 74-58 in the VTB United League last Sunday. Strelnieks scored 5 points and added 6 passes. Spartak St.Petersburg (10-3) is placed second in group A. This season Strelnieks averages: 6.1ppg, 1.2rpg, 3.2apg, 2FGP: 39.5%, 3FGP: 37.1% and FT: 76.9%. He is in the roster of the Latvian senior national team.

   #3. The Latvian player who performed third best last week abroad was former international center Andris Biedrins (213-86, currently plays in NBA), who plays in the NBA. Biedrins could not help the Golden State Warriors (30-22) to beat the Oklahoma City Thunder (39-13). It was not his best game last Wednesday. Biedrins scored only 2 points, grabbed 7 rebounds and made 3 blocks in 12 minutes. The Golden State Warriors were crushed 119-98 on the road by the Thunder. It was Golden State Warriors' fifth consecutive loss in a row. Biedrins has been at the team for nine years. This season his overall stats are: 0.5ppg, 3.1rpg and FT: 36.4% in the 41 games. Biedrins played for the Latvian national team four years ago.

   #4. Small forward Rihards Kuksiks (197-88, college: Arizona St., currently plays in Eurocup) was not able to help Budivelnyk (3-2) in their game against Banvit BK (3-2) in the Eurocup. He scored 9 points and grabbed 5 rebounds. It was his first game for Budivelnyk this season. But the second-placed Budivelnyk was defeated 94-85 in Balikesir by the leading Banvit BK in the group I of Eurocup. Kuksiks' team will play only one more game in the Eurocup Top 16. And now that game is very crucial. Kuksiks is also Latvian national team player.

   #5. International guard Armands Skele (192-83, currently plays in VTB United League) faced previously mentioned Janis Blums in the VTB United League last game. Skele, who plays in Estonia was not able to secure a victory for Kalev/Cramo (3-11) in their last game. Despite his very good performance Kalev/Cramo (#8) was crushed 95-73 in Vilnius by the higher-ranked (#5) Lietuvos rytas in the group A of VTB United League. Skele was the second best scorer with 16 points in 25 minutes. It was Kalev/Cramo's third consecutive loss in a row. There are only four games left until the end of the VTB United League Regular Season. So now every game will be important. This year Skele's total stats are: 9.3ppg, 3.8rpg and 1.8apg in the eight games. He plays currently for the Latvian national team.

   #6. Center Raitis Grafs (208-81, college: Valparaiso, currently plays in Estonia), who plays in the Estonian KML couldn't help Valga (9-12) in their last game on Saturday. Despite Grafs' very good performance Valga was defeated 69-56 in Tallinn by the one of league's weakest teams Tln Kalev (#8). He recorded a double-double by scoring 22 points and getting 11 rebounds. This season Grafs has relatively solid stats: 11.1ppg, 6.7rpg and 1.4apg. He is a former international player as he played for the Latvian senior team three years ago.

   #7. International forward Mareks Mejeris (208-91, agency: Players Group, currently plays in Spain), who plays in the Spanish LEB Gold (second division) couldn't help one of league's weakest teams CB Clavijo (7-10) in their last game. Despite Mejeris' very good performance CB Clavijo lost 72-79 in Coruna to the higher-ranked (#7) Leyma Basquet. He was the top scorer with 20 points. Mejeris also added 9 rebounds in 31 minutes. Mejeris has averaged so far 8.3ppg and 5.1rpg in the 17 games. He is also Latvian national team player.

   #8. Point guard Edgars Jeromanovs (186-86, currently plays in Sweden), who plays in the Swedish Basketligan couldn't help Norrkoping Dolphins (20-2) in their last game on Sunday. Despite Jeromanovs' very good performance Norrkoping Dolphins was defeated 78-73 in Uppsala by the second-ranked Basket. He was the top scorer with 15 points. Jeromanovs also added 3 assists. Jeromanovs belongs to league's best passers and is ranked #6. He has very reliable stats this season: 12.1ppg, 3.1rpg, 4.4apg and 1.5spg. Jeromanovs plays currently for the Latvian national team.

   #9. An experienced former international center Kaspars Kambala (206-78, agency: Alti Sport, college: UNLV, currently plays in Turkey), who plays in the Turkish TB2L (second division) couldn't help Pi Koleji (6-15) in their last game. Despite his very good performance Pi Koleji was crushed 85-62 in Giresun by the much higher-ranked (#4) Yesilgiresun. Kambala had a double-double by scoring 22 points and getting 12 rebounds in 30 minutes. Kambala has individually a very good year with high stats. He averages: 22.3ppg, 12.0rpg and 1.3apg in the four games. Kambala used to play for the Latvian national team four years ago.

   #10. Forward Maris Laksa (205-81, college: Providence, currently plays in Baltic League), who plays in Estonia couldn't help BC Rakvere (3-2) in their last game. Despite Laksa's good performance BC Rakvere (#3) lost 79-88 in Utena to the leading Juventus in the group G of Baltic League. He scored 10 points in 31 minutes. Laksa's team will play only one more game in the Baltic League Top 16. And now that game is quite important. Laksa has reliable stats this year: 12.9ppg and 4.1rpg in the 15 games. He is a former international player as ten years ago he still played for the Latvian senior national team.

   #11. Former University international guard Martins Kravcenko (192-85, currently plays in Ukraine) led Mykolaiv to a victory against the closely-ranked Cherkasy 82-75 in the Ukrainian Superleague on Sunday night. Kravcenko scored 11 points and grabbed 4 rebounds. Kravcenko has averaged so far 6.3ppg, 2.3rpg and 1.6apg. He used to play for the Latvian university national team four years ago.

   #12. Former international swingman Juris Umbrasko (197-79, currently plays in Baltic League) is a teammate of previously mentioned Maris Laksa and both played together in the last Baltic League game. Umbrasko couldn't help BC Rakvere in their game against Juventus. He cannot count Friday's game as one of the best ones. Umbrasko scored only 3 points and grabbed 5 rebounds. His team was defeated 88-79. Umbrasko's stats this season are: 12.3ppg, 5.9rpg, 1.1apg and 1.1spg. He used to play for the Latvian national team back in 2008.

   #13. Former U20 international center Zintis Plivda (206-88, currently plays in Belarus), who plays in the Belarusian Premier League couldn't help Rubon (9-10) in their last game. Despite Plivda's good performance Rubon lost 69-77 at home to the lower-ranked (#4) Sozh Gomel. He had a double-double by scoring 10 points and getting 12 rebounds in 25 minutes. Plivda's stats this year are: 12.1ppg and 9.4rpg in the seven games. He used to play for the Latvian U20 national team five years ago.

   #14. Former international center Kaspars Cipruss (210-82, currently plays in Ukraine) contributed to a BC Odessa's surprising victory against the third-ranked Mykolaiv 77-76 in the Ukrainian Superleague in Friday night's game. Cipruss scored 5 points, grabbed 5 rebounds, passed 3 assists and added 3 blocks. Cipruss has averaged so far 5.0ppg, 3.8rpg, 1.3apg and 1.2bpg. He used to play for the Latvian national team back in 2008.

   #15. Former international forward Janis Porzingis (201-82, agency: Interperformances, currently plays in Spain) helped Palencia Baloncesto edge the ninth-ranked Lleida Basquet 75-74 in the Spanish LEB Gold (second division) last Friday. Porzingis scored 9 points in 24 minutes. Porzingis averaged so far 11.4ppg, 2.8rpg and 1.6spg in the five games. He used to play for the Latvian national team five years ago.


The list of other players, who all have Latvian passport but never been selected to any of Latvian national teams:

   #1. Experienced Gary Gandel (203-G/F-80, currently plays in Israel) was the major contributor in a 1-point Hod Hasharon's victory against the closely-ranked Hapoel Afula (11-6) 81-80 in the Israeli National League (second division) in Tuesday night's game. He recorded a double-double by scoring 17 points and getting 10 rebounds. Gandel also added 5 assists and 3 steals. Maccabi Hod Hasharon (13-4) is placed third in the National League. It was his team's fourth consecutive victory in a row. Gandel has reliable stats this season: 12.5ppg, 5.3rpg and 2.8apg. He has a dual citizenship: Latvian and Israeli.

   #2. Matiss Sakne (191-G-91, currently plays in Denmark) contributed to a 1-point Horsens IC's victory against the closely-ranked Naestved (12-12) 76-75 in the Danish Ligaen in Wednesday night's game. Sakne scored 10 points in 34 minutes. Horsens IC (18-6) is placed third in the Ligaen. There are only three games left until the end of the Regular Season. Sakne has averaged so far 4.1ppg, 1.5rpg and 1.2apg in the 22 games he played so far.

   #3. Martins Provizors (202-C-87, currently plays in Ireland), who plays in the Irish Superleague could not help DCU Saints (7-9) in their last game. Despite Provizors' very good performance DCU Saints was edged 66-65 in a derby game by the league outsider (#8) UCD Marian. He had a double-double by scoring 22 points and getting 12 rebounds. Provizors also added 4 blocks in 30 minutes. It was DCU Saints' third consecutive loss in a row. There are only four games left until the end of the Regular Season. Provizors is one of the most experienced players in a team as it's his sixth year in DCU Saints' roster. He averaged so far 13.5ppg, 12.1rpg, 2.4apg and 1.9bpg in the eight games.

   #4. Edmunds Tukiss (200-SF-89, currently plays in Germany) managed to help Dragons Rhoendorf in a victory against the seventh-ranked TV 1862 Langen (10-8) 64-52 in the German ProB (third division) in Saturday night's game. Tukiss scored 5 points in 17 minutes. Dragons Rhoendorf (16-2) is placed first in Group South. There are only four games left until the end of the Regular Season. Tukiss has averaged so far 8.2ppg and 2.5rpg in the 16 games.

   #5. Ugis Promolds (190-G-88, currently plays in Denmark) was not able to help SISU (17-0) in their game against Bakken (18-5) in the Danish Ligaen. He cannot count Thursday's game as one of the best ones. Promolds scored only 2 points. The league leader SISU was crushed 93-68 at home by the second-ranked Bakken. There are only three games left until the end of the Regular Season. Promolds has averaged so far 1.8ppg and 1.1rpg.

   #6. Martins Abele (216-C-90, currently plays college basketball in the States) was not able to secure a victory for the Duquesne in their game against the The George Washington University in the NCAA. He cannot count Wednesday's game as one of the best ones. Abele recorded only 1 points. His team was crushed by 22 points 79-57. Abele has averaged so far 1.8ppg and 1.1rpg.

Eighth-ranked Limbazi (5-12) made lots of trouble for seventh ranked RSU (9-8) in Riga on Friday. RSU managed to secure only two-point victory 85-83. However their fans expected easier game. The hosts trailed by 2 points after three quarters before their 22-18 charge, which allowed them to win the game. RSU looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. Point guard Elvis Endzels (188-PG-94) put on an amazing game in the last round for Turiba (they play in Places 1-1), receiving a Eurobasket.com LBL2 Player of the Week award for round 12 (Second Stage).
