There was a change at the LBL leadership position after last games. Round 28 most important game was a defeat of league's leader Barons kvartals (15-9). They were crushed by second ranked Valmiera (15-9) 99-78 on Sunday night. It was a key game for the top position in the league. The hosts trailed by 1 point after first quarter, but they stormed back to get the 13-point lead at the halftime and eventually won the game 99-78. Valmiera made 21-of-24 free shots (87.5 percent) during the game. Worth to mention a great performance of forward Janis Berzins (202-93, agency: Players Group) who helped to win the game recording a triple-double by scoring 26 points, 11 rebounds, 11 assists and 5 steals (made all of his eight free throws) and guard Janis Kaufmanis (186-89) who added 30 points (on 11-of-14 shooting from the field) during the contest. At the losing side forward Maris Gulbis (202-85, agency: Players Group) responded with 30 points. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Valmiera keeps a position of league leader, which they share with Barons kvartals and Jekabpils. Barons kvartals will play next round against Jurmala trying to make it back to the top of the standings. Valmiera will try to continue on its current victory against second ranked Jekabpils on the road.
Another interesting game was a derby match between two teams from Riga: VEF Riga (#5) and Latvijas Universitate (#8). Latvijas Universitate was smashed at home by 30 points 73-103 and even the fact of playing on their own court did not help. The winners were led by international Dairis Bertans (192-89) who had that evening a double-double by scoring 13 points and 10 assists and Kaspars Berzins supported him with 10 points, 9 rebounds and 6 assists. Even 22 points and 4 assists by guard Zanis Peiners (204-90, agency: Interperformances) did not help to save the game for Latvijas Universitate. Since the result was very predictable, it gave the chance for the coaches to test many bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. VEF Riga (11-1) have an impressive six-game winning streak. Defending champion maintains fifth position. Latvijas Universitate at the other side keeps the eighth place with 16 games lost. Both teams do not play next round, which will be an opportunity for some rest.
The game in Jelgava was also quite interesting. Third ranked Jekabpils (15-9) played at the court of 6th ranked Jelgava (10-12). Jekabpils managed to secure a 8-point victory 96-88 on Sunday. Rinalds Sirsnins fired 32 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists for the winners. Kristaps Kanbergs produced 23 points and 6 rebounds for lost side. Jekabpils keep a position of league leader, which they share with Valmiera and Barons kvartals. Loser Jelgava keeps the sixth place with 12 games lost. Jekabpils will meet at home league's leader Valmiera in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. Jelgava will play against Liepaja (#9) and hope to secure a win.

In the last two games of round 28 Ventspils destroyed U18 on the opponent's court 83-59. Liepaja managed to outperform Turiba in a home game 93-79.

Jelgava - Jekabpils 88-96

The game in Jelgava was also quite interesting. Third ranked Jekabpils (15-9) played at the court of 6th ranked Jelgava (10-12). Jekabpils managed to secure a 8-point victory 96-88 on Sunday. The guests trailed by 5 points at the halftime before their 52-39 charge in the second half, which allowed them to win the game. Jekabpils made 21-of-26 free shots (80.8 percent) during the game. The former international point guard Rinalds Sirsnins (186-85) fired 32 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists for the winners. Polish center Michal Hlebowicki (204-76) chipped in a double-double by scoring 18 points and 13 rebounds. Five Jekabpils players scored in double figures. Guard Kristaps Kanbergs (190-88) produced 23 points and 6 rebounds and American power forward Keith Chamberlain (204-87, college: Grinnell) added 22 points and 8 rebounds (made all of his ten free throws !!!) respectively for lost side.
