The game had a very big importance for second-ranked Barons kvartals as it allowed them to take a leadership position. Barons kvartals smashed 8th ranked Liepaja in Riga 93-71. It ended at the same time the four-game winning streak of Liepaja. The game without a history. Barons kvartals led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. They shot the lights out from three sinking 13 long-distance shots on high 52.0 percentage. Barons kvartals looked well-organized offensively handing out 23 assists comparing to just 8 passes made by Liepaja's players. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Barons kvartals made 7 blocks. The best player for the winners was forward Maris Gulbis (202-85, agency: Players Group) who scored 28 points (perfect from downtown making all five shots). American forward Tyler Cain (203-88, college: S.Dakota) chipped in 21 points, 5 rebounds and 5 blocks. At the other side the best for losing team was point guard Ingus Jakovics (185-93) who recorded 17 points. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. As mentioned above they are alone now at the top position. Liepaja at the other side dropped to the ninth place with 16 games lost. Liepaja will play next round against Jurmala trying to get back on the winning streak. Barons kvartals will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game.
Very important is a home loss of third ranked Valmiera (15-11) against ninth ranked Latvijas Universitate (11-16) on Saturday night. Host Valmiera was edged by Latvijas Universitate in a tough game in Valmiera in overtime84-87. It was a good game for guard Zanis Peiners (204-90, agency: Interperformances) who led his team to a victory with 25 points and 5 rebounds. Kristaps Dargais contributed with 14 points and 10 rebounds for the winners. Latvijas Universitate's coach Arturs Visockis-Rubenis allowed to play the deep bench players in such tough game. Power forward Maris Ziedins (203-90) replied with a double-double by scoring 17 points and 11 rebounds for Valmiera. Latvijas Universitate moved-up to seventh place. Valmiera at the other side keeps the third position with 11 games lost. Latvijas Universitate's supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will travel locally in Riga to the arena U18.
We should mention about the upset which took place in Turiba, where higher ranked Jelgava (10-14) lost to tenth ranked Turiba (8-18) in a road game 81-95 on Saturday. Janis Antrops scored 20 points and 8 rebounds to lead the charge for the winners. Turiba's coach Arnis Vecvagars used a ten-player rotation which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. The best for the losing side was Lauris Mizis with 15 points and 6 rebounds (on 7-of-9 shooting from the field). Turiba maintains tenth position with 8-18 record. Jelgava lost third consecutive game. They dropped to the eighth place with 14 games lost. Both teams do not play next round, which will be an opportunity for some rest.

In the last two games of round 30 VEF Riga defeated Ventspils in a road game 73-61. Jurmala beat U18 at home 76-66.

Ventspils - VEF Riga 61-73

We cannot really consider it an upset in the game between close teams when one of their biggest challengers Ventspils (13-2) were defeated at home by fifth ranked VEF Riga (12-1) 73-61 on Sunday. The game was mostly controlled by VEF Riga. Ventspils managed to win fourth quarter 16-15. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. VEF Riga dominated down low during the game scoring 50 of its points in the paint compared to Ventspils' 26. Lithuanian center Antanas Kavaliauskas (207-84, college: Texas A&M, agency: Interperformances) scored 24 points (on 9-of-10 shooting from the field) to lead the charge for the winners and American-Bulgarian guard Earl Rowland (188-83, college: St.Mary's, CA) chipped in 12 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists during the contest. Four VEF Riga players scored in double figures. VEF Riga's coach Ramunas Butautas used a ten-player rotation which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. The best for the losing side was international forward Janis Timma (201-92, agency: FCM) with 11 points and 6 rebounds and international center Martins Meiers (208-91) scored 12 points. VEF Riga have an impressive seven-game winning streak. Defending champion maintains fifth position with 12-1 record. Loser Ventspils keep the fourth place with two games lost. Both teams do not play next round, which will be an opportunity for some rest.

Jurmala - U18 76-66

No shocking result in a game when seventh ranked Jurmala (11-14) defeated at home bottom-ranked U18 (1-14) 76-66 on Saturday. The hosts trailed by 1 point at the halftime before their 42-31 charge in the second half, which allowed them to win the game. Jurmala dominated down low during the game scoring 48 of its points in the paint compared to U18's 20. Jurmala forced 22 U18 turnovers. Newly promoted team stay at the bottom position with 14 games lost. Jurmala will meet at home Liepaja (#9) in the next round.
