We bring you last week's top performances from Latvians who are playing abroad and who all have had prior experience of national team duties at youth or senior level.

   #1. This week's number one is an international point guard Janis Strelnieks (191-89, currently plays in Eurocup). He led his Russian team Spartak St.Petersburg to a victory against the leader Budivelnyk (4-2) 83-72 in the Eurocup in Wednesday night's game. Strelnieks recorded 12 points, 4 rebounds and 7 assists in 35 minutes on the court. It was the game of the round between two top 2 ranked teams in group K. Spartak St.Petersburg (3-3) is placed second. This year Strelnieks averages: 6.3ppg, 1.5rpg, 3.2apg, 2FGP: 56.8%(21-37), 3FGP: 23.4% and FT: 77.8% in the 13 games he played so far. He is currently a member of the Latvian senior national team.

   #2. Second place goes to an international small forward Davis Bertans (203-92, currently plays in Adriatic League). Bertans was the major contributor in Partizan's victory against the eighth-ranked Cedevita (12-11) 77-76 in the Adriatic League last Sunday. He scored 18 points. BC Partizan MT:S Beograd (14-9) is placed fourth in the Adriatic League. There are only three games left until the end of the Adriatic League Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. Bertans' overall stats this season are: 9.4ppg, 2.6rpg, 2FGP: 48.2%, 3FGP: 45.5%(45-99) and FT: 75.0%. He is in the roster of the Latvian senior national team.

   #3. The Latvian player who performed third best last week abroad was an international shooting guard Janis Blums (191-82, currently plays in VTB United League), who plays in Lithuania. Blums could not help Lietuvos rytas (8-8) in their last game. Despite his good performance the sixth-placed Lietuvos rytas lost 79-88 at home to the leading Khimky in the group A of VTB United League. Blums recorded 11 points in a mere 16 minutes. There are only two games left until the end of the VTB United League Regular Season. So now every game is very crucial. It's Blums' first season with the team. He has relatively good stats this year: 11.9ppg, 1.9rpg, 2.1apg, 3FGP: 42.7% and FT: 87.2% in the 14 games. Blums is also a member of the Latvian senior national team.

   #4. Small forward Rihards Kuksiks (197-88, college: Arizona St., currently plays in Ukraine) was not able to help Budivelnyk (25-8) in their game against BC Odessa (13-20) in the Ukrainian Superleague. He scored 9 points and blocked 2 blocks. But the league leader Budivelnyk was edged 87-85 on their home court in Kyiv by the much lower-ranked BC Odessa (#11). They ended the series of seven consecutive victories. Kuksiks' overall stats this season are: 9.3ppg, 3.7rpg and 2.6apg. He is also Latvian national team player.

   #5. An experienced former international swingman Juris Umbrasko (197-79, currently plays in Baltic League) was not able to secure a victory for BC Rakvere (4-2) in their game against Rudupis (5-1) in the Baltic League, despite his very good performance last Tuesday. Umbrasko recorded 17 points in 28 minutes. But BC Rakvere (#2) was crushed 108-72 on the road by the leading Rudupis in the group G of Baltic League. This year Umbrasko has relatively solid stats: 12.8ppg, 5.8rpg, 1.1apg and 1.2spg in the 17 games. He used to play for the Latvian national team five years ago.

   #6. Forward Maris Laksa (205-81, college: Providence, currently plays in Estonia) is a teammate of previously mentioned Juris Umbrasko. But that was another game of his team in Estonian KML which we would like to mention. Laksa led BC Rakvere to a victory over the closely-ranked TTU (12-10) 70-65. He was MVP of the game. Laksa scored 15 points. It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. BC Rakvere Tarvas (19-6) is placed first in the KML. Laksa is the league's top scorer. He has individually a very good season with high stats. Laksa averages: 16.3ppg, 3.1rpg, 1.2apg and 1.2spg. He is a former international player as he played for the Latvian senior team ten years ago.

   #7. Former international swingman Mareks Jurevicus (197-85, currently plays in Italy) couldn't help Prima Veroli (7-13) in their game against Givova Scafati (11-9) in the Italian Lega2 (second division), despite his very good performance in Sunday night's game. Jurevicus was the second best scorer with 23 points. He also added 8 rebounds in 36 minutes. But Prima Veroli lost 84-88 on their home court in Veroli to the much higher-ranked (#5) Givova Scafati. Jurevicus has reliable stats this year: 14.4ppg, 4.1rpg, 1.5apg and 1.3spg in the 20 games. He used to play for the Latvian national team two years ago.

   #8. Point guard Edgars Jeromanovs (186-86, currently plays in Sweden) couldn't help Norrkoping Dolphins (3-2) in their game against White Eagles (6-26) in the Swedish Basketligan. Despite his very good performance last Friday Jeromanovs was the second best scorer with 16 points. He also added 3 assists and 4 steals. Jeromanovs' team will play only one more game in the Regular Season. And now that game is quite important. Jeromanovs averaged so far 12.5ppg, 3.0rpg, 4.4apg and 1.5spg. He plays currently for the Latvian national team.

   #9. International guard Armands Skele (192-83, currently plays in Baltic League) contributed to an easy victory against the leader Pieno Zvaigzdes (4-2) 71-54 in the Baltic League on Thursday night. Skele recorded 10 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals in 26 minutes. It was the game of the round between two top 2 ranked teams in group F. BC Kalev/Cramo Tallinn (5-1) is placed second. It was his team's eighth consecutive victory in a row. This year Skele's overall stats are: 6.7ppg, 5.4rpg, 4.3apg and 2.0spg in the seven games. He is also in the roster of the Latvian national team.

   #10. Guard Kristaps Valters (190-81, currently plays in Spain) contributed to a Baloncesto Fuenlabrada's surprising victory against the ninth-ranked FIATC Joventut (11-12) 92-86 in the Spanish ACB in Sunday night's game. Valters scored 13 points and added 4 assists. Mad-Croc Fuenlabrada (7-16) is placed 16th in the ACB. It was his team's first victory after three consecutive loses. Valters' total stats this season are: 9.1ppg, 2.1rpg and 2.9apg. He is a former international player as four years ago he still played for the Latvian senior national team.

   #11. Former U18 international guard Edgars Cunda (195-84, currently plays in Estonia) couldn't help one of league's weakest teams Valga in their game against Rapla in the Estonian KML, despite his very good performance last Saturday. Cunda was the top scorer with 18 points. He also added 9 rebounds and dished 4 assists (went 8 for 8 at the free throw line) in 36 minutes. But his team lost 71-83. Cunda is ranked sixth on the list of the best passers in the league with 3.6apg. This year he also averages: 11.6ppg, 6.2rpg and 1.4spg in the 23 games. Cunda used to play for the Latvian U18 national team eleven years ago.

   #12. Former international center Kaspars Kambala (206-78, agency: Alti Sport, college: UNLV, currently plays in Turkey) was the main contributor in a Pi Koleji's shocking victory against the third-ranked Maliye Milli 83-75 in a derby game in the Turkish TB2L (second division) on Friday night. He was the best player in that game. Kambala scored 19 points and grabbed 9 rebounds. This season he has very high stats. Kambala averages: 21.3ppg and 11.9rpg. He used to play for the Latvian national team back in 2009.

   #13. International forward Mareks Mejeris (208-91, agency: Players Group, currently plays in Spain) helped CB Clavijo win their game against the 11th-ranked Caceres Basket 70-57 in the Spanish LEB Gold (second division) in Friday night's game. Mejeris was the top player that evening. He scored 15 points and grabbed 5 rebounds in 24 minutes. This year Mejeris' total stats are: 9.1ppg and 5.4rpg in the 20 games. He is also Latvian national team player.

   #14. Former international center Raitis Grafs (208-81, college: Valparaiso, currently plays in Estonia) is a teammate of previously mentioned Edgars Cunda and both played together in the last Estonian KML game. Grafs couldn't help one of league's weakest teams one of league's weakest teams Valga in their game against Rapla. Despite his very good performance last Saturday He scored 15 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. Grafs averaged so far 11.7ppg, 6.9rpg and 1.3apg. He used to play for the Latvian national team back in 2010.

   #15. International point guard Kaspars Vecvagars (193-93, currently plays in Lithuania) couldn't help Lietkabelis in their game against Rudupis in the Lithuanian LKL, despite his good performance on Saturday night. Vecvagars recorded 10 points in 15 minutes. But his team was crushed by 23 points 100-77. He has averaged so far 6.1ppg, 1.7rpg and 1.7apg in the 15 games. Vecvagars is also in the roster of the Latvian national team.


The list of other players, who all have Latvian passport but never been selected to any of Latvian national teams:

   #1. Experienced Gary Gandel (203-G/F-80, currently plays in Israel), who plays in the Israeli National League (second division) could not help Hod Hasharon (15-5) in their last game on Tuesday. Despite his very good performance Hod Hasharon was defeated 86-79 at home by the lower-ranked Elitzur Yavne (#5). Gandel was the second best scorer with 16 points. He also added 4 passes. Gandel averaged so far 11.1ppg, 4.4rpg, 3.6apg and 1.1spg. He has a dual citizenship: Latvian and Israeli.

   #2. Edmunds Tukiss (200-SF-89, currently plays in Germany) was not able to help Dragons Rhoendorf (18-3) in their game against Bayer Giants (13-8) in the German ProB (third division). Tukiss scored 8 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. Dragons Rhoendorf was defeated 81-74 on the road by the lower-ranked Bayer Giants (#3) in the Group South. It was Dragons Rhoendorf's first loss after four consecutive victories. His team will play only one more game in the Regular Season. And that game will be critical. Tukiss has averaged so far 8.7ppg and 2.7rpg.

   #3. Martins Abele (216-C-90, currently plays college basketball in the States) was not able to secure a victory for the Duquesne (1-13) in their game against the University of North Carolina - Charlotte (7-8) in the NCAA. He scored 8 points and grabbed 4 rebounds in 20 minutes. The Duquesne was edged in an overtime 89-87 on their home court in Pittsburgh, PA by the University of North Carolina - Charlotte. It was Duquesne's fourth consecutive loss in a row. Abele's team will play only one more game in the NCAA Regular Season. Abele has averaged so far 8.7ppg and 2.7rpg in the 19 games he played so far.

Kaspars Berzins (ex BK Ogre) agreed terms with Lokomotiv - 6 hours ago
Lokomotiv Kuban (VTB) strengthened their roster with addition of 32-year old Latvian international power forward Kaspars Berzins (213-104kg-85). He started the season at BK Ogre in Latvian LBL league. In two games he recorded 11.0ppg, 5.5rpg and 1.5bpg this season. The most of last season Berzins spent at Zenit where in 26 VTB United League games he averaged 10.8ppg, 5.5rpg and 1.2apg. He helped them to make it to the semifinals. The game between third ranked Jekabpils (10-8) and tenth ranked Latvijas Universitate (4-15) was the most important one in the last round on Sunday night. Jekabpils were defeated by Latvijas Universitate in a tough game in Riga 68-77. It ended at the same time the four-game winning streak of Jekabpils. Jekabpils trailed by 16 points after 3 quarters before a 20-13 run in the last quarter cut the deficit to 68-77 at the end of the game. Rihards Ginters (192-SF-93) put on an amazing game in the last round for RSU (they play in Places 1-1) and that's him to receive a Eurobasket.com LBL2 Player of the Week award for round 7 (Second Stage). The 23-year old had a double-double of 34 points and fifteen rebounds, while his team crushed Saldus (#11, 1-12) with 22-point margin 83-61. RSU maintains the 6th position in Latvian LBL2.
