Top ranked Ventspils (16-2) recorded its second loss on the court of second ranked Valmiera on Saturday night. Visitors were edged by Valmiera 97-95. It may be a crucial game in the contest for the top position in the league. The hosts trailed by 6 points at the halftime before their 32-20 charge in the third quarter, which allowed them to win the game. Valmiera made 19-of-23 free shots (82.6 percent) during the game. 26 personal fouls committed by Ventspils helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. The best player for the winners was American point guard Damier Pitts (177-89, college: Marshall) who scored 24 points, 9 rebounds, 7 assists and 4 steals (was perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line !!!). point guard Janis Kaufmanis (186-89) chipped in 20 points and 4 assists. Lithuanian forward Edgaras Zelionis (207-89) produced a double-double by scoring 16 points and 11 rebounds for the guests. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. Valmiera (13-7) have an impressive eight-game winning streak. Defending champion maintains second position having just one point less than leader Ventspils. Ventspils at the other side still keep top place with two games lost. Valmiera will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Ventspils will play at home against Jekabpils and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

The former international point guard Ingus Jakovics (186-93, college: Liepaja-2) orchestrated the victory by scoring 22 points, 5 rebounds and 6 assists (was perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line). Willie Deane contributed with 18 points and 6 assists (on 7-of-9 shooting from the field) for the winners. Ivars Rihards Zvigurs (198-95) replied with 22 points and 9 rebounds for Valka/Valga. Ventspils maintains first position with 16-2 record. Valka/Valga lost fifth consecutive game. They stay at the bottom place with nine games lost. Ventspils will play against Jekabpils (#3) at home in the next round, which may be the game of the day. Valka/Valga will play against VEF Riga (#4) and hopes to get back on the winning track.

Rest of the games of round 20 were quite predictable and ended without any surprises. Here they are:
BK Ogre defeated Liepaja/Triobet in a road game 82-71. LU lost to defending champion Valmiera at home 60-78. BK Ogre lost to Barons Riga on the opponent's court 74-84. LU unfortunately lost to Liepaja/Triobet in a home game 62-67. Jurmala recorded a loss to Jekabpils on the road 70-83.
The best stats of 20th round was 15 points and 8 rebounds by Arturs Berzins of Valmiera.

Liepaja/Triobet - BK Ogre 71-82

We cannot really consider it an upset in the game between close teams when 7th ranked Liepaja/Triobet (8-11) was defeated at home by eighth ranked BK Ogre (7-11) 82-71. Liepaja/Triobet was ahead by 5 points after three quarters before a 28-12 charge of BK Ogre, which allowed them to win the game. Their players were unselfish on offense dishing 21 assists. Naturalized Italian forward Gints Antrops (201-82, agency: Interperformances) orchestrated the victory by scoring 15 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists. The former international forward Janis Poznaks (203-83) contributed with a double-double by scoring 11 points and 11 rebounds for the winners. Four BK Ogre players scored in double figures.
