Here is the weekly review of the top performing Latvian players, who play currently abroad.

   #1. This week's number one is an international small forward Janis Timma (201-92, currently plays in VTB United League). He led his Russian team Zenit to a victory against the league leader CSKA (15-2) 90-77 in the VTB United League in Thursday night's game. Timma scored 14 points, grabbed 5 rebounds and dished 3 assists in 28 minutes on the court. It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. Zenit Saint Petersburg (14-3) is placed second in the VTB United League. It was his team's eighth consecutive victory in a row. Timma has relatively good stats this year: 13.9ppg, 3.9rpg, 2.9apg, 1.4spg, 2FGP: 61.4%(43-70), 3FGP: 35.8% and FT: 83.3% in 16 games he played so far. He is currently a member of the Latvian senior national team.

   #2. Second place goes to an international swingman Zanis Peiners (203-90, currently plays in Basketball Champions League). Peiners contributed to PAOK's victory against the closely-ranked Partizan (8-6) 82-78 in the Basketball Champions League last Wednesday. He scored 15 points and grabbed 6 rebounds (was perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line). PAOK Thessaloniki (7-7) is placed fourth in group C. It's Peiners' first season with the team. This year Peiners averages: 8.4ppg, 3.4rpg, 3FGP: 17.1% and FT: 77.8%. He is in the roster of the Latvian senior national team.

   #3. The Latvian player who performed third best last week abroad was an international point guard Janis Strelnieks (191-89, currently plays in Germany). Strelnieks contributed to a Brose Baskets' victory against the tenth-ranked EnBW Ludwigsburg (9-12) 84-75 in the German BBL on Wednesday night. He recorded 12 points and added 3 passes in a mere 17 minutes. Brose Baskets Bamberg (20-1) is placed second in the BBL. It was his team's eighth consecutive victory in a row. This year Strelnieks' overall stats are: 9.7ppg, 2.4rpg, 3.5apg, 2FGP: 60.5%(26-43), 3FGP: 42.9% and FT: 79.3% in 17 games. He is also a member of the Latvian senior national team.

Power forward Ojars Silins (203-93, currently plays in Germany) helped Telekom Baskets win their game against the third-ranked s Oliver Baskets (11-5) 101-84 in the German BBL in Sunday night's game. Silins scored 13 points, grabbed 4 rebounds and dished 3 assists. Telekom Baskets Bonn (12-8) is placed seventh in the BBL. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. Silins' total stats this season are: 9.8ppg, 3.0rpg and 1.2apg. He is also Latvian national team player.

Despite Porzingis' good performance the New York Knicks (23-34) lost 105-116 on the road to the Oklahoma City Thunder. He recorded 11 points, 7 rebounds and 2 blocks in 33 minutes. Porzingis has individually a very good year with high stats. He averages: 18.3ppg, 7.1rpg, 1.3apg and 1.9bpg in 49 games. Porzingis plays currently for the Latvian national team.

Power forward Rolands Freimanis (208-88, agency: Alti Sport, currently plays in FIBA Europe Cup) helped his Turkish team Usak Sportlif win their game against the seventh-ranked Oradea crushing them 108-82 in the FIBA Europe Cup on Wednesday night. He scored 10 points and blocked 2 shots. Muratbey Usak Sportlif Basketbolis placed third in group Q. This season Freimanis has relatively solid stats: 13.0ppg and 3.0rpg. He is an international player who is currently on the senior Latvian National Team roster.

Former U20 international guard Sandis Silavs (194-88, currently plays in Estonia) was the major contributor in Valga's victory against the league outsider Noorteliiga (0-14) crushing them 108-53 in the Estonian Alexela KML in Tuesday night's game. Silavs scored 19 points and added 4 passes in 24 minutes. BC Valga-Valka/Maks&Moorits (6-13) is placed seventh in the Alexela KML. They ended the series of five consecutive loses. Silavs has reliable stats this year: 10.2ppg, 2.7rpg and 3.4apg in 19 games. He used to play for the Latvian U20 national team nine years ago.

Zvigurs helped Valga win their game against the league outsider Noorteliiga (0-14) crushing them 108-53. He scored 12 points, had 5 boards, dished 6 assists and stole 3 balls. Zvigurs averaged so far 14.2ppg, 6.0rpg, 1.9apg and 1.5spg. He used to play for the Latvian U20 national team back in 2015.

Lejasmeiers scored 13 points, grabbed 5 rebounds and dished 7 assists in 26 minutes. Sodertalje Kings (16-7) is placed third in the Basketligan. Lejasmeiers' stats this year are: 10.6ppg, 2.8rpg and 4.3apg in 22 games. He is also in the roster of the Latvian national team.

   #10. Center Klavs Cavars (205-96, currently plays in Turkey) was not able to help Pertevniyal (8-16) in their last game on Saturday. Despite Cavars' very good performance Pertevniyal was badly defeated 86-69 in Petkim by the much higher-ranked Socar (#3). He was the top scorer with 17 points. Cavars averaged so far 12.0ppg and 3.5rpg. He is U20 international player who is currently on the Latvian National Team roster.

   #11. International forward Davis Bertans (208-92, currently plays in NBA) managed to help San Antonio Spurs in a victory against the Orlando Magic crushing them 107-79 in the NBA last Wednesday. Bertans recorded 5 points in 16 minutes. This year Bertans' total stats are: 4.3ppg and 1.4rpg in 47 games. He plays currently for the Latvian national team.

   #12. An experienced former international guard Edmunds Gabrans (188-79, currently plays in Norway) was not able to secure a victory for Froya Basket (15-9) in their last game on Sunday. Despite Gabrans' very good performance Froya Basket was defeated 72-63 in Oslo by the lower-ranked Centrum (#4). He was the top scorer with 16 points. Gabrans also added 4 rebounds. Gabrans averaged so far 13.4ppg, 4.3rpg, 4.6apg and 1.5spg. He used to play for the Latvian national team back in 2002.

   #13. Former U16 international small forward Rodions Kurucs (206-98, currently plays in Spain) helped Barca II win their game against the tenth-ranked Palma crushing them 86-63 in the Spanish LEB Gold (second division) in Sunday night's game. Kurucs scored 11 points in 20 minutes. Kurucs has averaged so far 9.8ppg, 2.4rpg and 1.2apg in 17 games. He used to play for the Latvian U16 national team three years ago.

   #14. Former U20 international point guard Reno Silavs (180-91, currently plays in Norway) is a teammate of previously mentioned Edmunds Gabrans. But that was another game of his team in Norwegian BLNO which we would like to mention. Silavs helped Froya Basket win their game against the closely-ranked Nidaros Jets 84-67. He scored 12 points and added 6 assists in 31 minutes. Silavs averaged so far 12.2ppg, 2.7rpg, 4.0apg and 1.5spg in 21 games. He used to play for the Latvian U20 national team back in 2011.

   #15. Former U20 international guard Kristaps Kanbergs (189-88, currently plays in Estonia) is a teammate of previously mentioned Sandis Silavs. He played also in the last Estonian Alexela KML game facing Ivars Rihards Zvigurs (above) in the other team. Kanbergs helped Valga win their game against the league outsider Noorteliiga crushing them 108-53. He scored only 3 points, had 5 rebounds and dished 6 assists. Kanbergs has averaged so far 8.2ppg, 4.2rpg, 2.1apg and 1.3spg. He used to play for the Latvian U20 national team nine years ago.


The list of other players, who all have Latvian passport but never been selected to any of Latvian national teams:

   #1. Alvis Eglitis (195-F-85, currently plays in Norway) could not help Asker Aliens (12-13) in their last game on Wednesday. Despite Eglitis' very good performance Asker Aliens was crushed 98-77 at home by the higher-ranked Centrum (#4). He recorded a double-double by scoring 15 points and getting 19 rebounds. There are only two games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. Eglitis is one of the most experienced players in a team as it's his fourth year in Asker Aliens' roster. Eglitis has averaged so far 10.0ppg, 10.8rpg, 1.5apg and 1.5spg.

   #2. Martins Provizors (202-C-87, currently plays in Ireland) was not able to help DCU Saints (6-12) in their last game. Despite Provizors' very good performance DCU Saints was badly defeated 85-69 in a derby game by the second-ranked Swords Thunder. He had a double-double by scoring 15 points and getting 24 rebounds. Provizors also added 2 blocks in only a mere 7 minutes. There are only four games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game is very crucial. Provizors has individually a very good year with high stats. He averages: 20.3ppg, 16.1rpg, 2.9apg and 1.4bpg in 16 games he played so far.

   #3. Arkadijs Makarenko (194-F, currently plays in Ireland) is a teammate of previously mentioned Martins Provizors and both played together in the last Irish Super League game. Makarenko was not able to secure a victory for DCU Saints (6-12) in their game against Swords Thunder (16-2). He recorded 8 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. DCU Saints was badly defeated 85-69 in a derby game by the second-ranked Swords Thunder. Makarenko is one of the most experienced players in a team as it's his fifth year in DCU Saints' roster. Makarenko has averaged so far 7.9ppg, 7.1rpg, 2.4apg, 1.1bpg and 1.9spg.

   #4. Aksels Skaistlauks (195-SG-97, currently plays in Germany) couldn't help Tuebingen II (7-13) in their game against Karlsruhe SC (13-7) in the German Regionalliga (fourth division). He cannot count Sunday's game as one of the best ones. Skaistlauks scored only 2 points and added 3 assists in 20 minutes. The 11th-placed Tuebingen II (7-13) was badly defeated 87-70 on their home court in Tuebingen by the higher-ranked (#6) Karlsruhe SC in the South-West group. It was Tuebingen II's third consecutive loss in a row. Skaistlauks has averaged so far 5.6ppg, 1.4rpg and 1.1apg in 19 games.

VEF Riga - Ventspils 78-69 After two years of absence VEF Riga is once again LBL Champion! They didn't struggle and swept higher-ranked Ventspils 4-0 in the final series. Game 4 was without a history. Ventspils trailed by 13 points after 3 quarters before a 22-18 run in the last quarter cut the deficit to 69-78 at the end of the game. 26 personal fouls committed by Ventspils helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. Miasto Szkla Krosno (PLK) agreed terms with 26-year old Latvian international guard Davis Lejasmeiers (192-84kg-91). He moved there from Sodertalje Kings in Swedish Basketligan where he played this season. In 47 Basketligan games he had 10.9ppg, 2.9rpg and 4.0apg. Lejasmeiers helped them to make it to the final.
