The most exciting game of round 23 in the LBL took place in Jekabpils. This derby game ended with only three-point home defeat of 3rd placed Jekabpils (12-11) to eighth ranked BK Ogre (9-13) 72-69 on Saturday evening. Jekabpils were trailing by 6 points at halftime but managed to get 3-point lead after three quarters before a 23-17 charge of BK Ogre, which allowed them to win the game. Strangely Jekabpils outrebounded BK Ogre 44-31 including 31 on the defensive glass. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. 28 personal fouls committed by Jekabpils helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. The best player for the winners was point guard Marcis Vitols (183-92) who scored 22 points. The former international forward Janis Poznaks (203-83) chipped in 19 points and 7 rebounds. The former international point guard Rinalds Sirsnins (186-85) produced a double-double by scoring 15 points and 12 assists for the hosts. Jekabpils' coach Rudolfs Rozitis rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. BK Ogre maintains eighth place with 9-13 record. Jekabpils at the other side keep the third position with 11 games lost. BK Ogre are looking forward to face higher ranked Jurmala (#7) on the road in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Jekabpils will play against the league's second-placed Valmiera (#2) and will have a slim chance for a victory.

The former international point guard Edgars Jeromanovs (186-86) answered with 14 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists for Jurmala. Ventspils (20-2) have an impressive series of five victories in a row. They maintain first place. Jurmala lost third consecutive game. They keep the seventh position with 15 games lost. Ventspils will play against VEF Riga (#4) on the road in the next round. Jurmala will play against BK Ogre and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

In the last game of round 23 Liepaja/Triobet was defeated by Valmiera in a road game 103-99.
The best stats of 23th round was 24 points and 7 rebounds by Martins Laksa of Valmiera.

Valmiera - Liepaja/Triobet 103-99

There was no surprise when 6th ranked Liepaja/Triobet (10-13) was defeated on the road by second ranked Valmiera (15-8) 103-99. However just four-point win is not that big difference and the fans of host team counted on more convincing victory. Liepaja/Triobet was ahead by 1 point at the halftime before a 30-23 third quarter run of Valmiera. Liepaja/Triobet was plagued by 37 personal fouls down the stretch. American point guard Damier Pitts (177-89, college: Marshall) orchestrated the victory by scoring 25 points and 7 assists. The former international Martins Laksa (200-90) contributed with 24 points and 7 rebounds (on 8-of-10 shooting from the field) for the winners. Pitts is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market. Valmiera's coach Uvis Helmanis allowed to play the deep bench players in such tough game. American guard Malcolm Griffin (193-91, college: Fresno Pacific, agency: Promotex) answered with 21 points, 5 rebounds and 7 assists and guard Arturs Ausejs (192-90) added 21 points and 5 rebounds in the effort for Liepaja/Triobet. Five Valmiera and four Liepaja/Triobet players scored in double figures. Defending champion maintains second place with 15-8 record having four points less than leader Ventspils. Liepaja/Triobet at the other side keeps the sixth position with 13 games lost. Valmiera will play against Jekabpils (#3) on the road in the next round, which may be the game of the day. Liepaja/Triobet will play against Latvijas Universitate and hopes to get back on the winning track.
