Best players of Latvian LBL round 23 - Feb 27, 2017

Martins
Laksa
Former international Martins Laksa (200-SF-90) put on an extraordinary performance in the last round for league's second-best Valmiera and that's him to receive a Eurobasket.com Player of the Week award for round 23.
The 26-year old had the game-high 24 points adding seven rebounds and two assists for Valmiera in his team's victory, helping them to edge out Liepaja/Triobet (#6, 10-13) 103-99. Valmiera maintains the 2nd position in Latvian LBL. They would have been even better if they hadn't lost a few games earlier this season. Valmiera will need more victories to improve their 15-8 record. It's Laksa's second year at Valmiera and it's hard to imagine this team without him. Laksa has impressive league stats. He is in league's top in points (4th best: 14.9ppg) and averages solid 50.6% FGP and 51.9% from behind 3-point line.

The second most remarkable performance in last round's games was 33-year old former international forward Janis Poznaks (203-F-83) of BK Ogre. Poznaks impressed basketball fans with 19 points and 7 rebounds. It was enough for BK Ogre to edge the higher-ranked Jekabpils (#3, 12-11) by 3 points 72-69. BK Ogre's 8th position in the standings has not changed. His team is not often considered as one of the league's best with a mere 9-13 record. Poznaks is a newcomer at BK Ogre and despite he is not a team leader yet, every game he becomes more reliable player. Hopefully performances like the last one will happen more often.

The third best performed player last round was another Valmiera's star - American Damier Pitts (177-PG-89). Pitts scored 25 points and passed seven assists. He was another key player of Valmiera, helping his team with a 103-99 win against the lower-ranked Liepaja/Triobet (#6, 10-13). Valmiera needs these victories very badly if they think about taking over top position in the standings. Their record at this point is 15 victories and 8 lost games. Pitts has a great season in Latvia. After 19 games, he made it on the list of the league's leaders in points with 14.4ppg (8th best) and assists with 5.4apg (6th best). Pitts attended one of camps at Eurobasket Summer League on his way to pro basketball.

Other top performing players last week:
4. Marcis Vitols (183-PG-92) of BK Ogre - 22 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists
5. Malcolm Griffin (193-G-91) of Liepaja/Triobet - 21 points, 5 rebounds and 7 assists
6. Carl Montgomery (203-F) of Liepaja/Triobet - 16 points, 9 rebounds and 2 assists
7. Lauris Blaus (208-C-90) of Valmiera - 13 points and 11 rebounds
8. Artis Ate (192-G-89) of Ventspils - 14 points, 2 rebounds and 5 assists
9. Andrejs Selakovs (207-C-88) of Jekabpils - 12 points and 13 rebounds
10. Andrejs Grazulis (202-C-93) of Ventspils - 12 points, 7 rebounds and 2 assists

The Player of the week is chosen based on efficiency calculation, but also including game result, importance of the game, if played recorded double-double/triple-double, etc.
The efficiency formula is a combination of various formulas used by different basketball organizations/leagues. We got involved many basketball scouts and journalists to assure it's accuracy.
The formula: 1.5*PTS + 3* (REB+AST+ST+BL-TO) - 2*BSAG - 4*PF + 3*PFRV + 4* (2FGPM+3FGPM) + 1.5*FTM - 3* (2FGPA-2FGPM) - 3* (3FGPA-3FGPM) - (FTA-FTM)

LBL2 Round 1 of Finals. Jelgava open win count - 1 day ago
Jelgava - ViA 87-77 Jelgava fired past ViA to victoriously open LBL2 Finals. The game was mostly controlled by Jelgava. ViA managed to win second period 20-18. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They made 22-of-24 free shots (91.7 percent) during the game. 24 personal fouls committed by ViA helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. Worth to mention a great performance of swingman Edgars Krumins (194-86) who helped to win the game recording...   [read more]
