The Second Stage in LBL2 is slowly approaching the end. But there may be still some important changes in the final standings in the last 3 rounds. There were many interesting games last round. The round ended with derby games, favorites losing the games and even winless team recording their first victory.

BJBS Riga can celebrate finally their first win this season after 11 consecutive losses. The victory is especially important as it came on the road game in , where they defeated Riga/Ridzene (1-12) 93-85 on Wednesday. Riga/Ridzene was trailing by 3 points at halftime but managed to get 4-point lead after three quarters before a 30-18 charge of BJBS Riga, which allowed them to win the game. They also forced 21 Riga/Ridzene turnovers. 25 personal fouls committed by Riga/Ridzene helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. Guard Aivars Dambis (183-0) fired a double-double by scoring 37 points (!!!), 12 rebounds, 8 assists and 6 steals for the winners. Guard Ingus Lapans (196-98) chipped in 21 points and 4 assists. Guard Karlis Ozolins (191-98) produced a double-double by scoring 21 points, 10 rebounds and 6 assists for lost side. Riga/Ridzene's coach Aigars Brigmanis rotated twelve players in this game, but that didn't help. BJBS Riga (1-11) left bottom position moving up to twentieth place. It was Riga/Ridzene's eighth loss in a row. Newly promoted team dropped to the bottom position with 12 games lost. Both teams do not play next round, which will be an opportunity for some rest.
Leader Kekava delivered the eighteenth victory. This time they beat 7th ranked Marupe (9-11) 69-63 in Riga. Worth to mention a great performance of forward Agnis Cavars (196-86) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 15 points and 14 rebounds. Nauris Miezis contributed with 24 points and 6 rebounds for the winners. Kekava's coach Edgars Teteris allowed to play the deep bench players saving starting five for next games. Guard Roberts Paze (193-95) replied with 17 points, 5 rebounds and 6 assists for Marupe. Kekava (18-1) have an impressive seven-game winning streak. Newly promoted Kekava maintains first position. Marupe lost fourth consecutive game. They keep the seventh place with 11 games lost. Kekava will play against Ogre/Kumho Tyre (#5) at home in the next round. Marupe's supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will face at home their local rival from Riga RSU.
We should mention about the upset which took place in Livani, where 8th ranked Limbazi (6-13) lost to eleventh ranked Livani (3-14) in a road game 70-79 on Wednesday. Worth to mention a great performance of Juris Kalnins who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 23 points and 13 rebounds. Livani's coach Edgars Cimars used a ten-player rotation which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. At the losing side Vents Veinbergs responded with 26 points and 8 rebounds. Livani maintains eleventh position with 3-14 record. Limbazi at the other side keeps the eighth place with 13 games lost. Livani will meet at home higher ranked ViA (#4) in the next round and they do not belong to the favorites in that game. Limbazi will have a break next round.
An interesting game took place in Riga, where 14th ranked DSN/SB (10-5) lost at home to seventeenth ranked VEF skola (9-6) 70-83. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of DSN/SB. The winners were led by Matiss Surkulis who scored that evening 24 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists (on 12-of-15 shooting from the field). Both coaches used bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. VEF skola maintains seventeenth position with 9-6 record. DSN/SB at the other side keeps the fourteenth place with five games lost. VEF skola's next round opponent will be Valmiera/ORDO-2 (#18) on the road.
The game with biggest result difference took place in Ogre. Local Ogre/Kumho Tyre (10-8) outscored 10th ranked RTU (4-15) 89-51 on Wednesday night. Sandis Bets fired 14 points and 5 rebounds for the winners. Ogre/Kumho Tyre's coach Peteris Ozolins felt very confident that he used 10 players and allowed the starting five to get some rest. Ogre/Kumho Tyre have a solid three-game winning streak. They maintain fifth position with 10-8 record. RTU lost fourth consecutive game. They keep the tenth place with 15 games lost. Ogre/Kumho Tyre will face league's leader Kekava in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. RTU will play against Saldus (#9) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

Rest of the games of round 16 were very predictable and ended without any surprises. Here they are:
Jekabpils II was crushed by Madona in a road game 103-76. Saldus was beaten by ViA at home 77-84. Marupe lost to Jelgava on the opponent's court 70-78. Valmiera/ORDO-2 unfortunately lost to LU/BS Riga in a home game 75-88.
The best stats of 16th round was 19 points and 9 rebounds by Eduards Viksna of Livani.

Livani - Limbazi 79-70

We should mention about the upset which took place in Livani, where 8th ranked Limbazi (6-13) lost to eleventh ranked Livani (3-14) in a road game 70-79 on Wednesday. The hosts trailed by 5 points after first quarter, but they rallied back to get the 8-point lead at the halftime and eventually won the game 79-70. Livani dominated down low during the game scoring 54 of its points in the paint compared to Limbazi's 32. They outrebounded Limbazi 52-29 including a 34-20 advantage in defensive rebounds. Livani looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. Worth to mention a great performance of power forward Juris Kalnins (200-93) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 23 points and 13 rebounds and guard Matiss Caune (186-93) who added 15 points and 13 rebounds during the contest. Four Livani players scored in double figures. Livani's coach Edgars Cimars used a ten-player rotation which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. At the losing side guard Vents Veinbergs (188-93) responded with 26 points and 8 rebounds and center Gatis Licitis (196-88) scored 16 points and 6 rebounds. There was no surprise when 19th ranked Jekabpils II (3-12) was crushed on the road by seventeenth ranked Madona (9-5) 103-76 on Wednesday. The game was mostly controlled by Madona. Jekabpils II was better in second period 31-27. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Madona forced 20 Jekabpils II turnovers. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 22 assists comparing to just 5 passes made by Jekabpils II's players. Jekabpils II was plagued by 26 personal fouls down the stretch. American swingman Martin Barrett (196, college: Mount Olive) fired 35 points (!!!), 8 rebounds and 4 assists for the winners. Center Emils Petersons (196-99) chipped in 19 points and 5 rebounds (on 6-of-7 shooting from the field). Barrett is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market. Four Madona players scored in double figures. Forward Reinis Avotins (202-98) produced a double-double by scoring 28 points and 11 rebounds and guard Kristers Tumss (190-0) added 15 points respectively for lost side. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Madona have a solid three-game winning streak. They moved-up to sixteenth place. Jekabpils II lost sixth consecutive game. They keep the nineteenth position with 12 games lost. Madona will face higher ranked Ventspils Augstskola (#13) at home in the next round and it may be quite challenging game.

They dominated down low during the game scoring 56 of its points in the paint compared to RTU's 36. Ogre/Kumho Tyre forced 19 RTU turnovers. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 27 assists comparing to just 10 passes made by RTU's players. Guard Sandis Bets (194-92) fired 14 points and 5 rebounds for the winners. Guard Armands Briedis (194-98) chipped in 8 points and 8 rebounds. Ogre/Kumho Tyre's coach Peteris Ozolins felt very confident that he used 10 players and allowed the starting five to get some rest. Saldus trailed by 16 points after 3 quarters before a 27-18 run in the last quarter cut the deficit to 77-84 at the end of the game. ViA made 25-of-32 free shots (78.1 percent) during the game. Saldus were plagued by 30 personal fouls down the stretch. Guard Toms Kohanovs (191-96) fired 16 points and 5 assists for the winners. Forward Janis Engers (200-95) chipped in 12 points and 5 rebounds. Center Janis Licitis (200-84) produced a double-double by scoring 16 points and 15 rebounds and guard Toms-Karlis Broks (188-90) added 18 points and 6 rebounds respectively for lost side. Both coaches tested many bench players and allowed the starting five to get some rest. ViA maintains fourth position with 14-5 record. Loser Saldus keep the ninth place with 15 games lost. ViA will face Livani (#11) on the road in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Saldus will play against RTU in Riga and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

Very expected game when 7th ranked Marupe (9-11) was defeated on the road by third ranked Jelgava (17-4) 78-70 on Tuesday. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning the initial quarter 20-16. But Marupe won second period 16-13. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Forward Andris Justovics (200-89) fired 19 points for the winners. Guard Kalvis Krumins (185-90) chipped in 15 points. Jelgava's coach used entire bench and allowed the starting five to get some rest. Point guard Arturs Kramins (177-88) produced 23 points and guard Roberts Paze (193-95) added 17 points respectively for lost side. Jelgava have an impressive 11-game winning streak. They maintain third position with 17-4 record having just nine point less than leader Kekava. Marupe lost fourth consecutive game. They keep the seventh place with 11 games lost. Jelgava will have a break next round. Marupe's supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will face at home their local rival from Riga RSU.

LU/BS Riga forced 23 Valmiera/ORDO-2 turnovers and outrebounded them 45-31 including 31 on the defensive glass. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 26 assists. Guard Davis Klegeris (184-97) fired a double-double by scoring 24 points and 10 rebounds for the winners. Power forward Daniels Minajevs (205-95) chipped in a double-double by scoring 11 points and 15 rebounds. Four LU/BS Riga players scored in double figures. Point guard Davids Viksne (191-0) produced a double-double by scoring 19 points, 10 rebounds and 7 assists and guard Rainers Kalnins (188-99) added 19 points and 6 steals respectively for lost side. LU/BS Riga have an impressive six-game winning streak. They maintain fifteenth position with 9-3 record. Loser Valmiera/ORDO-2 keeps the eighteenth place with seven games lost.
