There are only two more rounds left in the Second Stage in LBL2. The fans could enjoy quite many interesting games in the last round. The round ended with derby games, favorites losing the games and games ending by tiny margin.

The most exciting game was a derby match between two local teams from Riga: RSU (#6) and Marupe (#7). Marupe was crushed at home by 19 points 46-65 and even the advantage of their own court did not help. The guests were tied at the half but managed to speed up in last two quarters eventually winning the game. RSU dominated on the defensive end, holding Marupe to just 7 points in first quarter. They held Marupe to an opponent 25.0 percent shooting from the field compared to 39.4 percent accuracy of the winners. RSU had a 38-24 advantage in offensive rebounds. Rihards Ginters (192-93) orchestrated the victory with a double-double by scoring 27 points and 11 rebounds. Forward Juris Sapovalovs (197-88) contributed with 9 points, 11 rebounds and 6 assists for the winners. Forward Nauris Metnieks (196-86) answered with 17 points and 9 rebounds for Marupe. RSU maintains sixth place with 10-10 record. Marupe lost fifth consecutive game. They keep the seventh position with 12 games lost. Both teams do not play next round, which will be an opportunity for some rest.
LBL2 top team - Kekava (19-1) had no problems winning another game. This time they beat fifth ranked Ogre/Kumho Tyre (10-9) 85-68. It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of Ogre/Kumho Tyre. Guard Martins Steinbergs (191-90) stepped up and scored 28 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists for the winners and Agnis Cavars chipped in 15 points, 14 rebounds, 8 assists and 4 steals. Kekava's coach Edgars Teteris allowed to play the deep bench players saving starting five for next games. Guard Sandis Bets (194-92) responded with a double-double by scoring 14 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists. Kekava have an impressive series of eight victories in a row. Newly promoted Kekava maintains first place with 19-1 record. Ogre/Kumho Tyre at the other side keeps the fifth position with nine games lost. Kekava's supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will travel locally in to the arena .
A very close game took place in Riga between RTU and Saldus. Tenth ranked RTU (5-15) got a very close home victory over 9th ranked Saldus (6-16). RTU managed to escape with a 3-point win 80-77 on Friday evening. Karlis Helmanis nailed a double-double by scoring 10 points and 11 rebounds for the winning side. Kaspars Baumanis came up with 24 points and 8 rebounds for Saldus in the defeat. RTU maintains tenth place with 5-15 record. Loser Saldus keep the ninth position with 16 games lost. Both teams do not play next round, which will be an opportunity for some rest.
Worth to mention about the upset in a game between ViA (14-6) and Livani (4-14), which took place in Livani. 4th placed ViA lost to eleventh ranked Livani in a road game 68-76. The best player for the winners was Juris Kalnins who had a double-double by scoring 35 points (!!!), 13 rebounds and 4 blocks. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. The victory was the third consecutive win for Livani. They maintain eleventh place with 4-14 record. ViA at the other side keeps the fourth position with six games lost. Livani will have a break next round. ViA will play on the road against Ogre/Kumho Tyre (#5) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
Another upset was a game between Ventspils Augstskola (14-2) and Madona (10-5), which took place in . Higher ranked Ventspils Augstskola lost to seventeenth ranked Madona in a road game 80-89 on Friday. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Ventspils Augstskola. Martin Barrett orchestrated the victory with a double-double by scoring 31 points, 13 rebounds, 6 assists and 5 steals. Madona's coach Agnis Bekeris used a ten-player rotation and allowed the starting five to rest. The victory was the fourth consecutive win for Madona. They moved-up to fourteenth place, which they share with DSN/SB. Loser Ventspils Augstskola keeps the thirteenth position with two games lost. Both teams do not play next round, which will be an opportunity for some rest.

There were no big surprises in other games of round 17: Turiba smashed Gulbenes Buki on the road 99-78. Valmiera/ORDO-2 lost to VEF skola on its own court 85-91. Saldus managed to outperform RSU in a road game 74-68.

Gulbenes Buki - Turiba 78-99

No shocking result in a game when second ranked Turiba (18-2) crushed 12th ranked Gulbenes Buki (2-18) in Riga 99-78 on Saturday. The game without a history. Turiba led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. They made 18-of-22 free shots (81.8 percent) during the game. Swingman Davids Muiznieks (196-94) orchestrated the victory by scoring 31 points and 8 rebounds. Power forward Rihards Adins (200-94) contributed with a double-double by scoring 14 points and 14 rebounds for the winners. Center Roberts Mednis (205-89) answered with a double-double by scoring 19 points and 11 rebounds and guard Nauris Rikveilis (189-94) added 16 points in the effort for Gulbenes Buki. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Turiba maintains second place with 18-2 record having just 4 victories less than leader Kekava. Gulbenes Buki lost their fourth game in a row. They keep the twelfth position with 18 games lost. Turiba will face ViA (#4) in Valmiera in the next round.

Worth to mention about the upset in a game between ViA (14-6) and Livani (4-14), which took place in Livani. 4th placed ViA lost to eleventh ranked Livani in a road game 68-76. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning first half. But ViA won third quarter 24-16. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Livani made 19-of-25 charity shots (76.0 percent) during the game. 24 personal fouls committed by ViA helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. The best player for the winners was power forward Juris Kalnins (200-93) who had a double-double by scoring 35 points (!!!), 13 rebounds and 4 blocks. A very close game took place in Riga between RTU and Saldus. Tenth ranked RTU (5-15) got a very close home victory over 9th ranked Saldus (6-16). RTU managed to escape with a 3-point win 80-77 on Friday evening. The hosts trailed by 4 points after first quarter, but they rallied back to get the 6-point lead at the halftime and eventually won the game 80-77. Power forward Karlis Helmanis (199-97) nailed a double-double by scoring 10 points and 11 rebounds for the winning side and swingman Lauris Berzins (192-97) accounted for 15 points. Guard Kaspars Baumanis (184-91) came up with 24 points and 8 rebounds and guard Toms-Karlis Broks (188-90) added 18 points and 6 rebounds respectively for Saldus in the defeat. The game between closely ranked teams ended with 18th ranked Valmiera/ORDO-2's (6-8) home loss to seventeenth ranked VEF skola (10-6) 85-91 on Thursday. The guests trailed by 4 points after first quarter, but they rallied back to get the 7-point lead at the halftime and eventually won the game 91-85. VEF skola outrebounded Valmiera/ORDO-2 44-32 including 32 on the defensive glass. It was a great shooting night for VEF skola especially from behind the arc, where they had solid 57.9 percentage. There was a small surprise when ninth ranked Saldus (6-16) won against 6th ranked RSU (10-10) in Riga 74-68 on Thursday. RSU trailed by 12 points after 3 quarters before a 20-14 run in the last quarter cut the deficit to 68-74 at the end of the game. Saldus looked well-organized offensively handing out 22 assists. Guard Kaspars Baumanis (184-91) orchestrated the victory by scoring 20 points. Point guard Edgars Buikis (180-84) contributed with 3 points, 6 rebounds and 14 assists for the winners. Forward Juris Sapovalovs (197-88) answered with a double-double by scoring 21 points and 10 rebounds and Rihards Ginters (192-93) added 10 points and 6 assists in the effort for RSU. Four RSU players scored in double figures. Saldus maintains ninth place with 6-16 record. Loser RSU keeps the sixth position with ten games lost. Both teams do not play next round, which will be an opportunity for some rest.
