Here is the weekly review of the top performing Latvian players, who play currently abroad.


Kristaps Porzingis

   #1. This week's number one is an international power forward Kristaps Porzingis (221-95, currently plays in NBA). He could not help the New York Knicks (27-41) in their last game. Despite Porzingis' very good performance the New York Knicks (27-41) lost 112-120 on the road to the Brooklyn Nets. He had a double-double by scoring 19 points and getting 10 rebounds. Porzingis also added 4 assists and 5 blocks in 34 minutes on the court. It was Knicks' third consecutive loss in a row. Porzingis has individually a very good year with high stats. He averages: 18.0ppg, 7.2rpg, 1.4apg, 2.0bpg, 2FGP: 47.8%, 3FGP: 37.0% and FT: 78.5% in 58 games he played so far. Porzingis is currently a member of the Latvian senior national team.

   #2. Second place goes to an international swingman Zanis Peiners (203-90, currently plays in Basketball Champions League). He was not able to help PAOK (7-7) in their last game on Wednesday. Despite Peiners' good performance the fourth-placed PAOK (7-7) was crushed 80-54 in Tenerife by the leading CB Canarias in the group C of Basketball Champions League. He was the top scorer with 14 points. Peiners also added 5 rebounds. It's Peiners' first season with the team. His overall stats this year are: 9.2ppg, 3.6rpg, 2FGP: 48.6%, 3FGP: 22.0% and FT: 80.6%. Peiners is in the roster of the Latvian senior national team.

   #3. The Latvian player who performed third best last week abroad was an international center Anzejs Pasecniks (216-95, college: VEF skola, currently plays in Spain). He contributed to an easy victory against the 14th-ranked Sevilla (7-15) 89-70 in the Spanish Liga Endesa on Sunday night. Pasecniks scored 6 points and grabbed 5 rebounds in 16 minutes. Herbalife Gran Canaria (15-8) is placed seventh in the Liga Endesa. It was his team's fifth consecutive victory in a row. This year Pasecniks' overall stats are: 7.9ppg, 3.3rpg, 2FGP: 63.8%(67-105) and FT: 60.5% in 23 games. He is also a member of the Latvian senior national team.

Forward Davis Bertans (208-92, currently plays in NBA) led San Antonio Spurs to an easy victory against the Golden State Warriors (53-14) crushing them 107-85 in the NBA in Saturday night's game. Bertans recorded 13 points. The San Antonio Spurs have a very solid 52-15 record this season. Bertans' total stats this year are: 4.5ppg and 1.5rpg. He is also Latvian national team player.

Former U20 international small forward Ivars Rihards Zvigurs (198-95, currently plays in Estonia) led Valga to a victory over one of league's weakest teams BC Rakvere (6-17) crushing them 97-76 in the Estonian Alexela KML last Saturday. Zvigurs was MVP of the game. He had a double-double by scoring 25 points and getting 10 rebounds. Zvigurs also added 4 assists and 4 steals in 28 minutes. BC Valga-Valka/Maks&Moorits (7-16) is placed seventh in the Alexela KML. They ended the series of three consecutive loses. There are only four games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. Zvigurs has relatively good stats this year: 14.4ppg, 6.0rpg, 1.8apg and 1.6spg in 23 games. He used to play for the Latvian U20 national team two years ago.

Power forward Rolands Freimanis (208-88, agency: Alti Sport, currently plays in Turkey) was not able to secure a victory for Usak Sportlif (6-15) in their game against Yesilgiresun Bld (9-12) in the Turkish BSL. Freimanis scored 8 points and grabbed 4 rebounds. Usak Sportlif was defeated 109-100 in Giresun by the higher-ranked Yesilgiresun Bld (#10). This season Freimanis has relatively solid stats: 12.2ppg, 5.0rpg and 1.2apg. He is an international player who is currently on the senior Latvian National Team roster.

International power forward Rolands Smits (207-95, currently plays in Spain) couldn't help Baloncesto Fuenlabrada (10-13) in their game against Valencia Basket (5-17) in the Spanish Liga Endesa. Smits scored only 4 points in 20 minutes. Baloncesto Fuenlabrada lost 86-101 in Valencia to the lower-ranked (#13) Basket. This year Smits' total stats are: 8.0ppg and 3.7rpg in 23 games. He is also Latvian national team player.

   #8. Power forward Ojars Silins (203-93, currently plays in FIBA Europe Cup) couldn't help Telekom Baskets (5-1) in their game against Ironi Nahariya in the FIBA Europe Cup. Silins cannot count Wednesday's game as one of the best ones. He scored only 2 points. Telekom Baskets was defeated 90-80 in Nahariya by the much lower-ranked Ironi (#8) in the group M of FIBA Europe Cup. Silins has reliable stats this season: 10.4ppg, 2.4rpg and 1.1apg. He plays currently for the Latvian national team.

International guard Davis Lejasmeiers (192-91, currently plays in Sweden) contributed to an easy victory against the league outsider Malbas (3-26) crushing them 103-73 in the Swedish Basketligan on Monday night. Lejasmeiers scored 8 points, had 5 boards, passed 7 assists and added 3 steals in 32 minutes. Sodertalje Kings (20-8) is placed third in the Basketligan. There are only two games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game is very crucial. Lejasmeiers averaged so far 10.4ppg, 2.9rpg, 4.4apg and 1.1spg in 27 games. He is also in the roster of the Latvian national team.

Small forward Rodions Kurucs (206-98, currently plays in Spain) was the major contributor in a Barca II's surprising victory against the eighth-ranked Ourense (15-12) 71-69 in the Spanish LEB Gold (second division) in Friday night's game. Kurucs scored 11 points and had 3 steals. FC Barcelona Lassa II (8-19) is placed 16th in the LEB Gold. It was his team's fifth consecutive victory in a row. Kurucs has averaged so far 9.5ppg, 2.4rpg and 1.5apg. He is a former U16 international player as three years ago he still played for the Latvian national team.

   #11. Former U20 international guard Kristaps Kanbergs (189-88, currently plays in Estonia) is a teammate of previously mentioned Ivars Rihards Zvigurs and both played together in the last Estonian Alexela KML game. Kanbergs contributed to an easy victory against one of league's weakest teams BC Rakvere crushing them 97-76. He scored 8 points and grabbed 5 rebounds in 28 minutes. Kanbergs has averaged so far 8.0ppg, 4.0rpg, 2.0apg and 1.2spg in 19 games. He used to play for the Latvian U20 national team nine years ago.

   #12. Former U20 international point guard Reno Silavs (180-91, currently plays in Norway) couldn't help Froya Basket (17-10) in their last game on Sunday. Despite Silavs' good performance Froya Basket was crushed 94-68 in Oslo by the lower-ranked Centrum (#5). He was the second best scorer with 14 points. Silavs' stats this season are: 12.0ppg, 2.6rpg, 3.9apg and 1.4spg. He used to play for the Latvian U20 national team back in 2011.

   #13. Former U20 international guard Sandis Silavs (194-88, currently plays in Estonia) is a teammate of previously mentioned Ivars Rihards Zvigurs. He played also in the last Estonian Alexela KML game facing Kristaps Kanbergs (above) in the other team. Silavs contributed to an easy victory against one of league's weakest teams BC Rakvere crushing them 97-76. He scored 8 points and grabbed 4 rebounds in 27 minutes. Silavs has averaged so far 9.9ppg, 2.7rpg and 3.0apg in 23 games. He used to play for the Latvian U20 national team nine years ago.

   #14. Former U20 international guard Andris Misters (196-92, currently plays college basketball in the States), who plays in the NCAA couldn't help the Jacksonville (5-9) in their last game. Despite Misters' good performance the Jacksonville was edged 78-76 in Loretto by the St.Francis University (PA). He recorded 10 points and grabbed 5 rebounds in 24 minutes. Misters has averaged so far 4.5ppg and 1.7rpg in 26 games. He used to play for the Latvian U20 national team back in 2012.

   #15. Former international forward Ernests Kalve (200-87, agency: HMS, currently plays in Romania) couldn't help Targu Mures in their game against Phoenix Galati in the Romanian Liga Nationala. Kalve scored only 4 points, had 6 rebounds and made 2 blocks. His team was edged 94-91. Kalve averaged so far 10.7ppg, 4.8rpg and 1.1apg. He used to play for the Latvian national team seven years ago.


The list of other players, who all have Latvian passport but never been selected to any of Latvian national teams:

   #1. Martins Provizors (202-C-87, currently plays in Ireland) could not help DCU Saints (7-14) in their last game on Sunday. Despite Provizors' very good performance DCU Saints was defeated 76-64 on the road by the higher-ranked UCC Demons (#6). He recorded a double-double by scoring 21 points and getting 16 rebounds. Provizors also added 5 assists and 3 blocks. His team will play only one more game in the Regular Season. And that game will be critical. Provizors has individually a very good season with high stats. He averages: 21.1ppg, 16.7rpg, 2.8apg and 1.5bpg.

   #2. Alvis Eglitis (195-F-85, currently plays in Norway) was not able to help Asker Aliens (13-14) in their last game. Despite Eglitis' good performance Asker Aliens was crushed 93-69 at home by the higher-ranked (#3) Gimle BBK. He recorded 13 points and grabbed 5 rebounds in 20 minutes. Eglitis is one of the most experienced players in a team as it's his fourth year in Asker Aliens' roster. Eglitis has averaged so far 10.0ppg, 10.4rpg, 1.5apg and 1.5spg in 26 games he played so far.

   #3. Rihards Sulcs (191-F-87, currently plays in United Kingdom) was not able to secure a victory for Dragons (11-11) in their last game on Saturday. Despite his good performance Dragons was badly defeated 80-64 in Manchester by the higher-ranked Magic (#4). Sulcs was the top scorer with 13 points. He also added 6 rebounds. There are only four games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game is very crucial. Sulcs is one of the most experienced players in a team as it's his sixth year in Dragons' roster. This season Sulcs has very high stats. He averages: 18.6ppg, 7.1rpg, 3.8apg and 2.4spg.

   #4. Aksels Skaistlauks (195-SG-97, currently plays in Germany) couldn't help Tuebingen II (8-15) in their game against Mainz (8-15) in the German Regionalliga (fourth division). Skaistlauks cannot count Saturday's game as one of the best ones. He scored only 2 points. Tuebingen II (#11) was defeated 87-77 on the opponent's court by the higher-ranked Mainz (#10) in the South-West group. There are only three games left until the end of the Regular Season. Skaistlauks has averaged so far 5.1ppg, 1.5rpg and 1.1apg.

Valmiera - Liepaja/Triobet 100-94 Valmiera held off Liepaja/Triobet to take 2-1 lead in the series. The hosts trailed by 8 points after three quarters before their 33-19 charge, which allowed them to win the game. Valmiera made 30-of-34 free shots (88.2 percent) during the game, while Liepaja/Triobet only scored thirteen points from the stripe. Valmiera looked well-organized offensively handing out 25 assists. Jelgava - ViA 87-77 Jelgava fired past ViA to victoriously open LBL2 Finals. The game was mostly controlled by Jelgava. ViA managed to win second period 20-18. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They made 22-of-24 free shots (91.7 percent) during the game. 24 personal fouls committed by ViA helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities.
