The Regular Season in LBL is slowly approaching the end. But there may be still some important changes in the final standings in the last 5 rounds.

The most interesting game was a derby match between two local teams from Riga: Barons Riga (#6) and VEF Riga (#4). Barons Riga (12-12) won against visiting VEF Riga (12-4) 80-71. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning the initial quarter 29-21. But VEF Riga won second period 19-17. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. The best player for the winners was Lithuanian Tauras Jogela (202-93, agency: Players Group) who scored 16 points and 8 rebounds. Lithuanian forward Denis Krestinin (202-94, agency: BeoBasket) chipped in 13 points and 8 rebounds. American guard Abdul Gaddy (190-92, college: Washington) produced 18 points for the guests. VEF Riga's coach Janis Gailitis rotated eleven players in this game, but that didn't help. Barons Riga moved-up to fifth place. VEF Riga at the other side keeps the fourth position with four games lost. Barons Riga are looking forward to face Liepaja/Triobet (#6) at home in the next round. VEF Riga will have a break next round.
Leader Ventspils delivered the twenty third victory. This time they beat 7th ranked BK Ogre (11-16) 92-85. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of BK Ogre. Lithuanian forward Edgaras Zelionis (207-89) orchestrated the victory by scoring 15 points and 7 rebounds. Ingus Jakovics contributed with 14 points and 5 rebounds for the winners. Ventspils' coach Karlis Muiznieks allowed to play the deep bench players saving starting five for next games. The former international forward Janis Poznaks (203-83) replied with 23 points for BK Ogre. Ventspils (23-2) have an impressive eight-game winning streak. They maintain first position. BK Ogre at the other side keeps the seventh place with 16 games lost. They share the position with Jurmala. Ventspils will play against league's second-placed Valmiera at home in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. BK Ogre will have a break next round.
The game in Liepaja was also quite interesting. Second ranked Valmiera (18-9) played at the court of 5th ranked Liepaja/Triobet (12-15). Valmiera managed to secure a 7-point victory 86-79 on Wednesday. Damier Pitts had a double-double by scoring 16 points and 16 assists to lead the charge for the winners. Arturs Ausejs responded with 19 points. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Valmiera have a solid three-game winning streak. Defending champion maintains second position with 18-9 record having three points less than leader Ventspils. Loser Liepaja/Triobet dropped to the sixth place with 15 games lost. Valmiera will meet league's leader Ventspils on the road in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. Liepaja/Triobet will play against Barons Riga (#5) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
The game with biggest result difference took place in Jekabpils. Local Jekabpils (15-12) outscored 5th ranked Liepaja/Triobet (12-15) 90-65. Jurijs Aleksejevs notched 19 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists to lead the effort. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Jekabpils maintains third position with 15-12 record having six points less than leader Ventspils. Liepaja/Triobet at the other side dropped to the sixth place with 15 games lost. Jekabpils' next round opponent will be Barons Riga (#5) at home. Liepaja/Triobet will play against Barons Riga and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

In the last two games of round 26 LU was defeated by Jekabpils in a road game 67-61. Valmiera beat Barons Riga at home 80-62.

Barons Riga - VEF Riga 80-71

American point guard Damier Pitts (177-89, college: Marshall) had a double-double by scoring 16 points and 16 assists to lead the charge for the winners and American-Israeli center Dor Fischer (211-81, college: W.Virginia) chipped in 12 points and 12 rebounds during the contest. Pitts is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market. Guard Arturs Ausejs (192-90) responded with 19 points and power forward Artjoms Butjankovs (205-91) scored 13 points and 5 rebounds. Both teams had five players each who scored in double figures. There was no surprise when 9th ranked Latvijas Universitate (5-22) was defeated on the road by third ranked Jekabpils (15-12) 67-61. However just six-point win is not that big difference and the fans of host team counted on more convincing victory. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning the initial quarter 16-11. But Latvijas Universitate won second period 17-13. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They outrebounded Latvijas Universitate 46-24 including a 16-3 advantage in offensive rebounds. Roberts Stumbris (199-93) notched a double-double by scoring 15 points and 10 rebounds to lead the effort and the former international point guard Rinalds Sirsnins (186-85) supported him with 20 points. Four Jekabpils players scored in double figures. Even 15 points by guard Edgars Lasenbergs (189-95) did not help to save the game for Latvijas Universitate. Peteris Rekis (197-93) added 13 points for the guests. Both coaches tested many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Energa Czarni Slupsk (PLK) inked 27-year old Latvian center Lauris Blaus (208-110kg-90). He played most recently at Valmiera/ORDO in Latvian LBL league.
