Rolands Freimanis' 32 points make him top Latvian player abroad of the week - Mar 23, 2017

We bring you last week's top performances from Latvians who are playing abroad and who all have had prior experience of national team duties at youth or senior level.

   #1. This week's number one is an international power forward Rolands Freimanis (208-88, agency: Alti Sport, currently plays in Turkey). He led Usak Sportlif to a victory over the eighth-ranked Pinar Karsiyaka (11-11) 86-71 in the Turkish BSL in Sunday night's game. Freimanis was MVP of the game. He recorded 32 points (!!!) and grabbed 5 rebounds in 37 minutes on the court. Muratbey Usak Sportlif Basketbol (7-15) is placed 12th in the BSL. It's Freimanis' first season with the team. Freimanis has relatively good stats this year: 13.1ppg, 5.0rpg, 1.1apg, 2FGP: 55.2%(90-163), 3FGP: 30.6% and FT: 77.8% in 22 games he played so far. He is currently a member of the Latvian senior national team.

Janis Timma

   #2. Second place goes to an international small forward Janis Timma (201-92, currently plays in VTB United League). Timma was the main contributor in Zenit's victory against the league outsider Parma (0-18) crushing them 101-72 in the VTB United League last Saturday. He was the best player in that game. Timma recorded 17 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists. Zenit Saint Petersburg (17-3) is placed second in the VTB United League. It was his team's 11th consecutive victory in a row. There are only four games left until the end of the VTB United League Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. This season Timma has relatively solid stats: 14.1ppg, 3.8rpg, 2.8apg, 1.3spg, 2FGP: 62.8%(49-78), 3FGP: 34.9% and FT: 85.4%. He is in the roster of the Latvian senior national team.

   #3. The Latvian player who performed third best last week abroad was an international power forward Kristaps Porzingis (221-95, currently plays in NBA). Porzingis could not help the New York Knicks (27-44) in their last game. Despite his very good performance the New York Knicks (27-44) lost 101-108 on the road to the Utah Jazz. Porzingis was the top scorer with 24 points. He also added 7 rebounds in 31 minutes. It was Knicks' third consecutive loss in a row. Porzingis has individually a very good year with high stats. He averages: 18.1ppg, 7.2rpg, 1.4apg, 2.0bpg, 2FGP: 48.4%, 3FGP: 36.6% and FT: 78.7% in 60 games. Porzingis is also a member of the Latvian senior national team.

Ojars Silins

   #4. Power forward Ojars Silins (203-93, currently plays in Germany) was not able to help Telekom Baskets (14-10) in their last game on Saturday. Despite his very good performance Telekom Baskets was defeated 113-103 in Bremerhaven by the much lower-ranked Eisbaeren (#14). Silins was the second best scorer with 18 points. Silins' overall stats this season are: 9.3ppg, 2.7rpg and 1.1apg. He is also Latvian national team player.

Zanis Peiners

   #5. International swingman Zanis Peiners (203-90, currently plays in Greece) contributed to an easy victory against the 12th-ranked Kymis (7-15) 88-71 in the Greek A1 last Saturday. Peiners recorded 13 points in 26 minutes. PAOK Thessaloniki (12-10) is placed fifth in the A1. There are only four games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game is very crucial. Peiners has reliable stats this year: 11.5ppg, 3.3rpg and 1.6apg in 19 games. He plays currently for the Latvian national team.

   #6. Center Anzejs Pasecniks (216-95, college: VEF skola, currently plays in Spain) managed to help Herbalife Gran Canaria to win against the league outsider La ICL Manresa (4-20) 95-76 in the Spanish Liga Endesa on Sunday night. Pasecniks recorded only 4 points. Herbalife Gran Canaria (16-8) is placed sixth in the Liga Endesa. It was his team's sixth consecutive victory in a row. Pasecniks' overall stats this season are: 7.7ppg and 3.3rpg. He is an international player who is currently on the senior Latvian National Team roster.

   #7. International guard Davis Lejasmeiers (192-91, currently plays in Sweden) contributed to a Sodertalje Kings' victory against the closely-ranked Uppsala Basket (18-12) 65-60 in the Swedish Basketligan in Wednesday night's game. Lejasmeiers was the top player that evening. He scored 22 points, grabbed 4 rebounds and dished 3 assists in 31 minutes. It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. Sodertalje Kings (22-9) is placed third in the Basketligan. Lejasmeiers' team will play only one more game in the Regular Season. And now that game is quite important. Lejasmeiers' stats this year are: 11.0ppg, 2.9rpg, 4.3apg and 1.1spg in 30 games. He is also Latvian national team player.

Ivars Rihards Zvigurs

   #8. Small forward Ivars Rihards Zvigurs (198-95, currently plays in Estonia) helped Valga win their game against the closely-ranked TLU/Kalev (8-16) crushing them 84-59 in the Estonian Alexela KML last Tuesday. Zvigurs was the top player that evening. He scored 17 points, grabbed 5 boards, passed 4 assists and added 3 steals. BC Valga-Valka/Maks&Moorits (8-16) is placed sixth in the Alexela KML. There are only three games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game will be important. Zvigurs averaged so far 14.5ppg, 6.0rpg, 1.9apg and 1.7spg. He used to play for the Latvian U20 national team back in 2015.

International power forward Rolands Smits (207-95, currently plays in Spain) was not able to secure a victory for Baloncesto Fuenlabrada (10-14) in their game against Sevilla (8-15) in the Spanish Liga Endesa. Smits recorded 6 points in 16 minutes. Baloncesto Fuenlabrada lost 67-72 on the opponent's court to the lower-ranked (#13) Sevilla. This year Smits' overall stats are: 7.9ppg and 3.6rpg in 24 games. He is also in the roster of the Latvian national team.

   #10. Small forward Rihards Kuksiks (197-88, agency: HMS, college: Arizona St., currently plays in France) was the major contributor in Nantes' victory against the second-ranked Provence Basket (16-7) 81-63 in the French ProB (second division) in Friday night's game. Kuksiks scored 19 points. Hermine Nantes Atlantique (12-11) is placed sixth in the ProB. Kuksiks averaged so far 11.2ppg, 2.5rpg and 1.3apg. He is a former international player as four years ago he still played for the Latvian senior national team.

   #11. Former U20 international guard Kristaps Kanbergs (189-88, currently plays in Estonia) is a teammate of previously mentioned Ivars Rihards Zvigurs and both played together in the last Estonian Alexela KML game. Kanbergs helped Valga win their game against the closely-ranked TLU/Kalev crushing them 84-59. He scored 16 points in 24 minutes. This year Kanbergs' total stats are: 8.4ppg, 3.9rpg, 2.0apg and 1.1spg in 20 games. He used to play for the Latvian U20 national team nine years ago.

   #12. International forward Davis Bertans (208-92, currently plays in NBA) couldn't help the San Antonio Spurs in their game against the Memphis Grizzlies in the NBA. Bertans cannot count Saturday's game as one of the best ones. He scored only 3 points. His team were defeated 104-96 in the NBA. Bertans has averaged so far 4.3ppg and 1.5rpg. He is also in the roster of the Latvian national team.

   #13. Former U16 international small forward Rodions Kurucs (206-98, currently plays in Spain) helped Barca II win their game against the closely-ranked Cocinas.com 83-77 in the Spanish LEB Gold (second division) in Sunday night's game. Kurucs recorded 11 points and grabbed 7 rebounds in 27 minutes. Kurucs has averaged so far 9.5ppg, 2.6rpg and 1.4apg in 21 games. He used to play for the Latvian U16 national team three years ago.

   #14. An experienced former international guard Edmunds Gabrans (188-79, currently plays in Norway) couldn't help Froya Basket (17-10) in their last game on Saturday. Despite Gabrans' very good performance Froya Basket was edged 75-73 at home by the lower-ranked Centrum (#5). He was the top scorer with 18 points. Gabrans also added 5 rebounds. Gabrans averaged so far 13.2ppg, 4.3rpg, 4.1apg and 1.4spg. He used to play for the Latvian national team back in 2002.

   #15. Former U20 international point guard Reno Silavs (180-91, currently plays in Norway) is a teammate of previously mentioned Edmunds Gabrans and both played together in the last Norwegian BLNO game. Silavs couldn't help Froya Basket (17-10) in their last game. Despite his good performance Froya Basket was edged 75-73 on their home court in Laksevag by the lower-ranked (#5) Centrum. Silavs scored 13 points and added 3 passes in 34 minutes. Silavs averaged so far 12.0ppg, 2.5rpg, 3.9apg and 1.3spg in 26 games. He used to play for the Latvian U20 national team six years ago.


The list of other players, who all have Latvian passport but never been selected to any of Latvian national teams:

   #1. Alvis Eglitis (195-F-85, currently plays in Norway). Eglitis could not help Asker Aliens (13-14) to beat Gimle BBK (17-10). He scored 5 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. Asker Aliens was crushed 90-61 on the road by the higher-ranked Gimle BBK (#3). Eglitis is one of the most experienced players in a team as it's his fourth year in Asker Aliens' roster. Eglitis has averaged so far 9.8ppg, 10.2rpg, 1.5apg and 1.6spg.

   #2. Aksels Skaistlauks (195-SG-97, currently plays in Germany) was not able to help Tuebingen II in their game against Fellbach (10-14) in the German Regionalliga (fourth division). He recorded only 4 points. The 11th-placed Tuebingen II (8-16) was defeated 69-65 at home by the higher-ranked Fellbach (#9) in the South-West group. There are only two games left until the end of the Regular Season. Skaistlauks has averaged so far 5.0ppg, 1.5rpg and 1.1apg.

Ourense Termal (LEB Gold) added to their roster 20-year old Latvian forward Verners Kohs (203-74kg-97) on loan from Obradoiro. The last season Kohs played at GBA Sparta in Czech Republic 1Liga where in 21 games he recorded 13.0ppg and 4.3rpg. He was voted All-Adidas Eurocamp in Treviso (Italy) 1st Team in 2017. Kohs represented Latvia at the European Championships U20 in Crete (Greece) this year. His stats at that event were 6 games: 11.0ppg, 3.0rpg, FGP: 37.5%, 3PT: 34.4%, FT: 60.0%. Koh...   [read more]

Nevezis Kedainiai (LKL) added to their roster 24-year old Latvian small forward Roberts Stumbris (199-98kg-93). He played last season at BK Jekabpils in Latvian LBL league. In 32 games he had 14.1ppg, 5.8rpg and 1.5apg. A very spectacular season in his career as he was named to Eurobasket.com All-Latvian League Honorable Mention and to the All-Star Game. Damier Pitts (ex Valmiera) signs at Kataja Basket - 1 day ago
Defending champion Joensuun Kataja Basket (Korisliiga) landed 28-year old American point guard Damier Pitts (177-80kg-89, college: Marshall, agency: Inception Sports). He played most recently at Valmiera/ORDO in Latvian LBL league. In 38 games he averaged 14.9ppg, 2.8rpg, 5.7apg and 1.5spg last season. Pitts helped them to make it to the semifinals.
