Here is the weekly review of the top performing Latvian players, who play currently abroad.

   #1. This week's number one is an international power forward Kristaps Porzingis (221-95, currently plays in NBA). He led New York Knicks to a victory over the Miami Heat (38-40) 98-94 in the NBA in Friday night's game. Porzingis was MVP of the game. He scored 22 points, had 7 rebounds and dished 3 assists in 36 minutes on the court. The New York Knicks have 30-48 record this season. There are only four games left until the end of the NBA Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. Porzingis has individually a very good year with high stats. He averages: 18.1ppg, 7.2rpg, 1.5apg, 2.0bpg, 2FGP: 49.3%, 3FGP: 35.8% and FT: 78.6% in 66 games he played so far. Porzingis is currently a member of the Latvian senior national team.

   #2. Second place goes to an international point guard Janis Strelnieks (191-89, currently plays in Germany). He was the main contributor in a 1-point Brose Baskets' victory against the 12th-ranked BG Goettingen (10-18) 71-70 in the German BBL last Sunday. Strelnieks was the best player in that game. He recorded 12 points and added 5 passes. Brose Baskets Bamberg (24-3) is placed second in the BBL. Strelnieks' overall stats this season are: 9.8ppg, 2.3rpg, 3.6apg, 2FGP: 60.9%(28-46), 3FGP: 42.1% and FT: 80.6%. He is in the roster of the Latvian senior national team.

   #3. The Latvian player who performed third best last week abroad was an international center Anzejs Pasecniks (216-95, college: VEF skola, currently plays in Spain). Pasecniks contributed to a Gran Canaria's victory against the closely-ranked FC Barcelona (17-8) 95-82 in the Spanish Liga Endesa on Saturday night. He scored 7 points and grabbed 4 rebounds in 20 minutes. Herbalife Gran Canaria (18-8) is placed fifth in the Liga Endesa. It was his team's eighth consecutive victory in a row. This year Pasecniks' overall stats are: 7.7ppg, 3.3rpg, 2FGP: 63.2%(74-117), 3FGP: 63.6% and FT: 62.0% in 26 games. He is also a member of the Latvian senior national team.

   #4. Swingman Zanis Peiners (203-90, currently plays in Greece) could not help PAOK (13-11) in their last game on Sunday. Despite Peiners' good performance PAOK was crushed 84-59 on the road by the leading Olympiacos. He was the second best scorer with 11 points. There are only two games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game is very crucial. It's Peiners' first season with the team. Peiners has relatively good stats this year: 11.2ppg, 3.2rpg and 1.5apg. He is also Latvian national team player.

   #5. International forward Davis Bertans (208-92, currently plays in NBA) was not able to help the San Antonio Spurs (60-18) in their last game. Despite Bertans' good performance the San Antonio Spurs (60-18) lost 95-102 in Los Angeles to the Lakers. He was the second best scorer with 14 points in 23 minutes. They ended the series of three consecutive victories. There are only four games left until the end of the NBA Regular Season. So now every game will be important. This year Bertans' total stats are: 4.4ppg and 1.5rpg in 62 games. He plays currently for the Latvian national team.

Forward Ernests Kalve (200-87, agency: HMS, currently plays in Romania) helped Targu Mures win their game against the third-ranked Phoenix Galati (8-16) 91-75 in the Romanian Liga Nationala on Friday night. Kalve was the top player that evening. He recorded a double-double by scoring 25 points and getting 10 rebounds. It was the game of the round between two top 3 ranked teams in group Places 7-10. BC Mures Targu-Mures (12-12) is placed first. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. There are only two games left until the end of the Second Stage. So now every game will be extremely important. This season Kalve has relatively solid stats: 11.1ppg, 4.9rpg and 1.1apg. He is a former international player as he played for the Latvian senior team seven years ago.

Former U20 international small forward Ivars Rihards Zvigurs (198-95, currently plays in Estonia) was the major contributor in Valga's victory against one of league's weakest teams BC Rakvere (9-23) crushing them 100-70 in the Estonian Alexela KML in Tuesday night's game. Zvigurs scored 21 points, had 7 boards, handed out 4 passes and blocked 2 shots in 27 minutes. BC Valga-Valka/Maks&Moorits (12-20) is placed sixth in the Alexela KML. It was his team's fourth consecutive victory in a row. There are only three games left until the end of the Regular Season. Zvigurs has reliable stats this year: 14.8ppg, 5.9rpg, 2.0apg and 1.6spg in 27 games. He used to play for the Latvian U20 national team two years ago.

   #8. Guard Sandis Silavs (194-88, currently plays in Estonia) is a teammate of previously mentioned Ivars Rihards Zvigurs and both played together in the last Estonian Alexela KML game. Silavs helped Valga win their game against one of league's weakest teams BC Rakvere (9-23) crushing them 100-70. He was the top player that evening. Silavs scored 22 points and added 6 passes. Silavs averaged so far 10.3ppg, 2.9rpg and 3.2apg. He used to play for the Latvian U20 national team back in 2008.

International power forward Rolands Smits (207-95, currently plays in Spain) was not able to secure a victory for Baloncesto Fuenlabrada (11-15) in their game against Real Madrid (18-7) in the Spanish Liga Endesa. Smits scored 9 points in 20 minutes. But Baloncesto Fuenlabrada was edged 101-99 in a derby game by the higher-ranked (#4) Real Madrid. Smits has averaged so far 7.9ppg and 3.7rpg in 26 games. He is also in the roster of the Latvian national team.

   #10. Power forward Rolands Freimanis (208-88, agency: Alti Sport, currently plays in Turkey) couldn't help Usak Sportlif (7-17) in their game against Galatasaray (14-10) in the Turkish BSL. Freimanis scored 8 points and grabbed 5 rebounds. Usak Sportlif was defeated 95-88 in Istanbul by the much higher-ranked Galatasaray (#6). Freimanis averaged so far 12.7ppg and 4.9rpg. He is an international player who is currently on the senior Latvian National Team roster.

   #11. International power forward Ojars Silins (203-93, currently plays in FIBA Europe Cup) couldn't help Telekom Baskets in their game against JSF Nanterre in the FIBA Europe Cup. Silins scored 5 points in 11 minutes. His team lost 81-86. Silins has averaged so far 9.6ppg, 2.4rpg and 1.1apg in 16 games. He plays currently for the Latvian national team.

   #12. International guard Davis Lejasmeiers (192-91, currently plays in Sweden) helped Sodertalje Kings win their game against the closely-ranked KFUM Jamtland 79-66 in the Swedish Basketligan on Sunday night. Lejasmeiers was the top player that evening. He recorded 18 points and grabbed 4 rebounds. Lejasmeiers averaged so far 11.0ppg, 2.9rpg and 4.2apg. He is also in the roster of the Latvian national team.

   #13. Former U20 international guard Kristaps Kanbergs (189-88, currently plays in Estonia) is a teammate of previously mentioned Ivars Rihards Zvigurs. But that was another game of his team in Estonian Alexela KML which we would like to mention. Kanbergs helped Valga win their game against the closely-ranked Parnu 90-74. He scored 12 points and added 5 passes in 25 minutes. Kanbergs has averaged so far 8.3ppg, 3.7rpg, 2.2apg and 1.1spg in 23 games. He used to play for the Latvian U20 national team nine years ago.

   #14. Former U20 international center Ricmonds Vilde (211-90, college: Houston Baptist, currently plays in France) managed to help ALM Evreux Basket to win against the fifth-ranked ADA Blois 76-74 in the French ProB (second division) last Friday. Vilde recorded only 4 points and grabbed 4 rebounds. Vilde has averaged so far 6.2ppg and 4.6rpg. He used to play for the Latvian U20 national team back in 2010.

   #15. U20 international forward Verners Kohs (203-97, currently plays in Czech Republic) helped GBA Sparta win their game against the fifth-ranked Ostrava crushing them 102-81 in the Czech Republic 1Liga (second division) on Sunday night. Kohs was the top player that evening. He scored 19 points and grabbed 5 rebounds in 27 minutes. Kohs' stats this year are: 11.9ppg and 4.1rpg in 19 games. He is also in the roster of the Latvian U20 national team.


The list of other players, who all have Latvian passport but never been selected to any of Latvian national teams:

   #1. Rihards Sulcs (191-F-87, currently plays in United Kingdom) could not help Dragons (14-12) in their last game on Saturday. Despite Sulcs' very good performance Dragons was crushed 87-62 on the road by the second-ranked Manchester Magic. He recorded a double-double by scoring 15 points and getting 10 rebounds. Sulcs also added 3 assists. Sulcs is one of the most experienced players in a team as it's his sixth year in Dragons' roster. He has individually a very good season with high stats. Sulcs averages: 18.4ppg, 7.3rpg, 3.7apg and 2.3spg.

   #2. Aksels Skaistlauks (195-SG-97, currently plays in Germany) contributed to a Tuebingen II's victory against the fifth-ranked Lich II (15-10) 65-61 in the German Regionalliga (fourth division) on Saturday night. He scored 6 points. SV 03 Tuebingen 2nd team (9-17) is placed tenth in South-West group. It was his team's first victory after three consecutive loses. The Regular Season already ended. Skaistlauks has averaged so far 5.1ppg, 1.4rpg and 1.1apg.

Valmiera - Liepaja/Triobet 100-94 Valmiera held off Liepaja/Triobet to take 2-1 lead in the series. The hosts trailed by 8 points after three quarters before their 33-19 charge, which allowed them to win the game. Valmiera made 30-of-34 free shots (88.2 percent) during the game, while Liepaja/Triobet only scored thirteen points from the stripe. Valmiera looked well-organized offensively handing out 25 assists. Jelgava - ViA 87-77 Jelgava fired past ViA to victoriously open LBL2 Finals. The game was mostly controlled by Jelgava. ViA managed to win second period 20-18. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They made 22-of-24 free shots (91.7 percent) during the game. 24 personal fouls committed by ViA helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities.
