LKL Round 9: Pieno Zvaigzdes edge Juventus by one point - Nov 10, 2012

The most exciting game of round 9 in the LKL took place in Pasvalys. This derby game ended with only one-point defeat on the road of 4th placed Juventus (3-2) to seventh ranked Pieno Zvaigzdes (3-2) 73-72 in the game for the fourth place. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Juventus. The hosts trailed by 4 points after three quarters before their 20-15 charge, which allowed them to win the game. Strangely Juventus outrebounded Pieno Zvaigzdes 39-27 including 26 on the defensive glass. The best player for the winners was American-Puerto Rican point guard TreVon Hughes (183-87, college: Wisconsin, agency: Edge Sports) who scored 21 points and 8 rebounds. American forward Tyrell Biggs (203-86, college: Pittsburgh) chipped in 16 points (on 8-of-10 shooting from the field). Pieno Zvaigzdes' coach Nerijus Zabarauskas used a ten-player rotation in such tough game. At the other side the best for losing team was American guard Darrick Leonard (190-84, college: Aurora) who recorded 14 points and 8 rebounds. Pieno Zvaigzdes moved-up to fourth place, which they share with defeated Juventus. Pieno Zvaigzdes is looking forward to face Zalgiris (#6) in Kaunas in the next round. Juventus will play at home against Sakalai in Vilnius and is hoping to win this game.
Undefeated leader Rudupis delivered the sixth consecutive victory. This time they beat 6th ranked Lietkabelis (2-3) 80-74 in Panevezys. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Lietkabelis. It was a good game for guard Arturas Milaknis (195-86) who led his team to a victory with 23 points. Gintaras Kadziulis contributed with 20 points for the winners. Forward Darius Griskenas (194-84) answered with 24 points for Lietkabelis. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Undefeated Rudupis (6-0) have an impressive series of six victories in a row. They maintain first place with a perfect record of 6 victories in a row. Lietkabelis at the other side dropped to the seventh position with three games lost. They share it with Neptunas. Rudupis will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Lietkabelis will play at home against Pieno Zvaigzdes (#4) in Pasvalys and hopes to get back on the winning track.
Bottom-ranked Naglis Palangos (0-7) tried to put together a comeback for its first victory of the season, but they fell short in the 84-74 loss to eighth ranked Nevezis (2-4) in Palanga on Friday evening. Gytis Sirutavicius stepped up and scored 18 points and 4 assists (perfect from the field making all six shots) for the winners. Nevezis' coach Darius Sirtautas allowed to play the deep bench players saving starting five for next games. The best for the losing side was Olasumbo Atoyebi with 19 points and 8 rebounds. Despite that victory Nevezis went down to ninth position due to points difference. Naglis Palangos lost their seventh game in a row. They still closes the standings with seven games lost. Nevezis will meet league's second-placed Siauliai on the road in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Naglis Palangos will play against Neptunas (#7) in Klaipeda and hopes to get finally their first victory.
Sakalai (#10) forced the game against Siauliai (#3) into an overtime, but lost by eight points 67-75. The game took place in Vilnius. But the guests from Siauliai were better at the end. Aurimas Kieza nailed a double-double by scoring 11 points and 14 rebounds for the winning side. The victory was the fourth consecutive win for Siauliai. They moved-up to second place. Sakalai at the other side keeps the tenth position with four games lost. Siauliai's next round opponent will be Nevezis (#9) in Kedainiai and are hoping to win another game. Sakalai will play on the road against Juventus in Utena.



Sakalai - Siauliai 67-75 OT

Sakalai (#10) forced the game against Siauliai (#3) into an overtime, but lost by eight points 67-75. The game took place in Vilnius. But the guests from Siauliai were better at the end. Sakalai was ahead by 4 points after three quarters before a 15-11 charge of Siauliai, which allowed them to tie the game at the end of regular time. They were better in overtime eventually winning that period 13-5. Siauliai outrebounded Sakalai 57-41 including a 43-30 advantage in defensive rebounds. 24 personal fouls committed by Sakalai helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. The former international Aurimas Kieza (202-82, college: Hofstra) nailed a double-double by scoring 11 points and 14 rebounds for the winning side and Senegalese forward Papa Dia (208-87, college: SMU) accounted for 11 points and 11 rebounds. Forward Evaldas Baniulis (201-87, college: S.Carolina) came up with 18 points and 5 rebounds and forward Justas Sinica (203-85) added 14 points and 8 rebounds respectively for Sakalai in the defeat. The victory was the fourth consecutive win for Siauliai. They moved-up to second place. Sakalai at the other side keeps the tenth position with four games lost. Siauliai's next round opponent will be Nevezis (#9) in Kedainiai and are hoping to win another game. Sakalai will play on the road against Juventus in Utena.

It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Lietkabelis. Lietkabelis was tied at the half but could not keep up in last two quarters eventually losing the game. Lietkabelis was plagued by 25 personal fouls down the stretch. It was a good game for guard Arturas Milaknis (195-86) who led his team to a victory with 23 points. Guard Gintaras Kadziulis (192-80) contributed with 20 points for the winners. Forward Darius Griskenas (194-84) answered with 24 points and Arnas Butkevicius (196-92) added 9 points and 9 rebounds in the effort for Lietkabelis. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Rudupis (6-0) have an impressive series of six victories in a row. Bottom-ranked Naglis Palangos (0-7) tried to put together a comeback for its first victory of the season, but they fell short in the 84-74 loss to eighth ranked Nevezis (2-4) in Palanga on Friday evening. It was a great shooting night for Nevezis especially from behind the arc, where they had solid 52.6 percentage. Gytis Sirutavicius (195-83) stepped up and scored 18 points and 4 assists (perfect from the field making all six shots) for the winners and forward Rolandas Jakstas (202-92) chipped in 11 points. Nevezis' coach Darius Sirtautas allowed to play the deep bench players saving starting five for next games. The best for the losing side was Nigerian power forward Olasumbo Atoyebi (203-88, college: Elon) with 19 points and 8 rebounds and guard Evaldas Lengvinas (190-89) scored 20 points. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Despite that victory Nevezis went down to ninth position due to points difference. Naglis Palangos lost their seventh game in a row. B.C. Zalgiris Kaunas (LKL) re-signed Renaldas Seibutis (196-82kg-85) and Robertas Javtokas. Both players had big impact in championship tile last year. Lietuvos Rytas will have their current coach for another season. Tomas Pacesas, the 44-year-old tactician from Alytus who helped Lietuvos Rytas win the King Mindaugas Cup in February but got a big failure in the LKL semifinal series against Neptunas, has extended his contract for one more season. Angers BC 49 (NM1) added to their roster 28-year old Lithuanian forward Rokas Uzas (203-88). Uzas managed to play in three leagues in two countries last year. He played last season at Bashkimi in Kosovan SuperLeague. In 11 games he recorded very impressive stats: 16.9ppg, 7.4rpg, 3.7apg and 1.1spg. Uzas helped them to make it to the semifinals.
