NKL Round 14: Change at the top of the standings - Nov 24, 2012

The fans could enjoy quite many interesting games in the last round. The round ended with change at the leadership position and favorites losing the games.

NKL round 14 caused change at the leadership position. Fifth defeat of league's leader Mazeikiai (10-5) against seventh ranked Olimpas (9-5) 104-72 was the most important game of the last round. Olimpas made 17-of-21 free shots (81.0 percent) during the game. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 24 assists. Forward Audrius Maneikis (203-84, college: Motlow St. CC) orchestrated the victory by scoring 25 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists. Forward Julius Kazakauskas (197-90) contributed with 23 points and 7 rebounds for the winners. Olimpas' coach Alidas Zukauskas felt very confident that he used 10 players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Swingman Vytautas Pikalavicius (196-90) replied with a double-double by scoring 12 points and 10 rebounds for Mazeikiai. Olimpas have a solid three-game winning streak. They moved-up to fourth place, which they share with 3 other teams. Mazeikiai at the other side dropped to the second position with five games lost. They share it with Meresta. They were replaced at the leadership position by Dzukija. Mazeikiai will play next round against Perlas-MRU trying to make it back to the top of the standings. Olimpas will try to continue on its current victory against fifteenth ranked Radviliskis on the road.
The game had a very big importance for third-ranked Dzukija as it allowed them to take a leadership position. Dzukija smashed 13th ranked Delikatesas in Alytus 101-82. American guard Bryan Harrison (188-84, college: Georgia Coll., agency: Global Sports Plaza) had a triple-double by scoring 14 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists to lead the charge for the winners and Giedrius Kurtinaitis chipped in 26 points during the contest. Swingman Laimonas Lukosevicius (197-86) responded with 24 points. Dzukija (11-3) have an impressive six-game winning streak. As mentioned above they took over a top position. Delikatesas lost sixth consecutive game. They keep the thirteenth place with nine games lost. Delikatesas will play next round against Silute trying to get back on the winning streak. Dzukija will try to continue on its current victory against ninth ranked S.Marciulionio at Vilnius.
Very important is a road loss of second ranked Meresta (10-5) against eleventh ranked Perlas-MRU (7-7) on Saturday night. Visiting Meresta was defeated by Perlas-MRU in a tough game in Vilnius 81-90. It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of Meresta. Zydrunas Kelys notched 19 points and 8 assists to lead the effort. Even 19 points, 8 rebounds and 7 assists by Tomas Gaidamavicius did not help to save the game for Meresta. Perlas-MRU moved-up to tenth place, which they share with Triobet. Loser Meresta keeps the second position with five games lost. They share it with Mazeikiai. Perlas-MRU will meet league's second-placed Mazeikiai on the road in the next round and they do not belong to the favorites in that game. Meresta will play against Triobet in Jonava and hope to secure a win.
Bottom-ranked Gargzdai-Bremena managed to get a second victory, breaking the six-game losing streak. This time they edged tenth-ranked Triobet 77-74. The best player for the winners was Donatas Tarolis who had a double-double by scoring 25 points and 13 rebounds. Gargzdai-Bremena maintains eighteenth position with 2-12 record. Triobet at the other side keeps the tenth place with seven games lost. Gargzdai-Bremena's next round opponent will be higher ranked Suduva-Mantinga (#4) in Marijampole and they do not belong to the favorites in that game.
Worth to mention about the upset in a game between Nafta Universitetas (4-10) and Birstono (4-11), which took place in . 14th ranked Nafta Universitetas lost to seventeenth ranked Birstono in a road game 80-88 on Saturday. Paulius Kleiza orchestrated the victory by scoring 16 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists. Birstono maintains seventeenth position with 4-11 record. Loser Nafta Universitetas keeps the fourteenth place with ten games lost. Birstono will have a break next round.

There were no big surprises in other games of round 14: Radviliskis was beaten by Statyba on the road 80-71. Silute was destroyed by Ezerunas-Karys on its own court 59-81. S.Marciulionio unfortunately lost to Zalgiris-Sabonio in Kaunas 73-84. Zanavykas managed to beat Suduva-Mantinga at home 90-83.



Statyba - Radviliskis 80-71

No shocking result in a game when fifth ranked Statyba (10-4) beat 16th ranked Radviliskis (3-11) in Vilnius 80-71 on Saturday. The hosts started the game with a very strong first quarter 23-14. But Radviliskis won second period 24-23. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Forward Darius Tarvydas (200-91) orchestrated the victory by scoring 23 points and 6 rebounds. point guard Ovidijus Varanauskas (187-91) contributed with 19 points and 5 assists for the winners. Forward Vaidas Trepocka (200-80, agency: Court Side) replied with 20 points (on 10-of-11 shooting from the field) and point guard Laimonas Kutra (185-88) added 9 points and 7 assists in the effort for Radviliskis. Despite that victory Statyba went down to eighth position due to points difference. Loser Radviliskis dropped to the fifteenth place with 11 games lost. Statyba will face higher ranked Zalgiris-Sabonio (#6) in Kaunas in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. Radviliskis will play against Olimpas (#7).

Rather expected game when 15th ranked Silute (4-10) was smashed at home by twelfth ranked Ezerunas-Karys (7-9) 81-59 on Saturday. The game was mostly controlled by Ezerunas-Karys. Silute was better in third quarter 15-12. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Ezerunas-Karys shot the lights out from three sinking 13 long-distance shots on high 52.0 percentage. Swingman Dainius Navickas (195-78) orchestrated the victory by scoring 18 points and 5 rebounds. Guard Marius Kugauda (191-76) contributed with 15 points for the winners. Four Ezerunas-Karys players scored in double figures.
