Jonas Valanciunas hurt as Raptors beat Orlando Magic 93-90 to win fifth straight - Dec 22, 2012

Jonas
Valanciunas
So they blew one play by not calling a timeout when they should have and blew another one by not fouling when they were told to and another by trying to run an offensive set against the express wishes of the head coach.

No, it was not the greatest or prettiest of Raptor performances at the Air Canada Centre on Friday night but looks dont count.

Wins do.

And Toronto now heads into its four-day Christmas break as the hottest team in the NBAs Eastern Conference.

With Terrence Ross having his best game as a pro, the Raptors overcame the loss of Jonas Valanciunas (211-C-92) to a broken finger and managed to grind out a 93-90 win over the Orlando Magic, giving Toronto a five-game winning streak for the first time since January 2010.

Emotionally, physically, I knew tonight was going to be a grind-it-out kind of game and we were lucky to get on the winning end of that, said coach Dwane Casey.

But it was far from easy or fun to watch.

Up by three with less than 15 seconds to go, the Raptors had a timeout to call but didnt, leading to a DeMar DeRozan miss that gave the Magic the ball and a shot to tie.

And the Raptors didnt foul during the ensuing possession despite that being Caseys play call and survived only because the Magic didnt get a good look at a three-pointer to tie.

We have a certain timeline where if were up three, we foul, said Casey. Everybody says, Dumb coach, dumb coach, he doesnt know what hes doing but we had a plan to foul but somewhere between the timeout and all that scramble it got misinterpreted.

And that was all after the Raptors had repeatedly tried to post up Alan Anderson on J.J. Redick after Casey wanted them to spread the floor and run a different set.

All brain cramps from a team at the end of a hard mental stretch and the allure of three days off to celebrate Christmas staring them in the face.

I knew anything complicated tonight was going to be difficult, said Casey.

Ross, who was outstanding defending Redick, played the entire fourth quarter and finished the night with 13 points in 23 minutes.

He had the highlight of the season so far with a put-back dunk in the third quarter where he came flying in from the sideline, sped past one Magic defender and threw it down from about five feet into the lane.

It was a jaw-dropping moment Casey called it a vicious dunk, but it was only part of the reason Ross played so much.

Defensively I was very proud of him he was guarding one of the best pure shooters in Redick and (Aaron) Afflalo, said Casey.

Every time Redick was over in the corner I was holding my breath because hes one of the best actors in the league. Hes acting like hes not doing anything and then he goes from zero to 100 in no time flat. But Terrence stayed alert, and stayed with him.

Jonas Valanciunas was injured after playing just 4 minutes, suffering a fractured metatarsal bone on his right ring finger. He will see a hand specialist over the next few days to determine the next course of treatment.

Thats another hole we have to fill. Somebody has to step up and pick up the slack, said Casey.

We have to fill that void with bodies, with energy, with defensive presence.
