NKL Round 25: Meresta defeats Dzukija in the closest game of the week - Jan 19, 2013

The most exciting game of round 25 in the NKL took place in Pakruojis. This derby game ended with only three-point defeat on the road of much higher ranked Dzukija (17-8) to ninth ranked Meresta (14-11) 80-77 on Friday evening. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning first half. But Dzukija won third quarter 25-23. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. 28 personal fouls committed by Dzukija helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. Center Julius Jucikas (205-89) stepped up and scored 26 points and 6 rebounds for the winners and guard Tomas Gaidamavicius (191-82) chipped in 12 points, 9 rebounds and 7 assists. At the losing side Polish center Cezary Trybanski (218-79) responded with a double-double by scoring 18 points and 16 rebounds (on 7-of-9 shooting from the field). Meresta have a solid series of three victories in a row. They moved-up to eighth place, which they share with Zalgiris-Sabonio. Dzukija lost third consecutive game. Newly promoted team dropped to the third position with eight games lost. Meresta is looking forward to face league's second-placed Olimpas in Plunge in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Dzukija will play at home against Ezerunas-Karys in Moletai and is hoping to win this game.
NKL top team - Mazeikiai (20-5) managed to deliver another win. This time they beat eighth ranked Zalgiris-Sabonio (14-11) 83-73. It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of Zalgiris-Sabonio. Rokas Giedraitis (198-92) nailed 19 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists for the winning side and Aleh Kojenets accounted for 18 points and 6 rebounds. Forward Marius Grigonis (198-94) came up with 17 points and 8 rebounds for Zalgiris-Sabonio in the defeat. Mazeikiai have a solid series of three victories in a row. They maintain first place with 20-5 record. Zalgiris-Sabonio at the other side keeps the eighth position with 11 games lost. They share it with Meresta. Mazeikiai will play against Statyba (#7) in Vilnius in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. Zalgiris-Sabonio will play at home against Delikatesas in Joniskis and hopes to get back on the winning track.
The game in Jonava was also quite interesting. 5th ranked Statyba (15-10) played at the court of sixth ranked Triobet (16-9). Triobet defeated Statyba 81-67 on Friday. Martynas Linkevicius fired a double-double by scoring 16 points, 11 rebounds and 8 assists for the winners. Martynas Paliukenas produced a double-double by scoring 10 points and 11 rebounds for lost side. Statyba's coach Gintautas Regina rotated eleven players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Triobet moved-up to fourth place, which they share with Suduva-Mantinga. Loser Statyba dropped to the seventh position with ten games lost. Triobet will meet Zanavykas (#6) in the next round. Statyba will play against the league's leader Mazeikiai and hope to secure a win.
Twelfth-ranked Perlas-MRU (10-15) gave a tough game to third ranked Olimpas (18-7) in Vilnius. The visitors from Plunge managed to secure only one-point victory 84-83. However their fans expected much easier game. Worth to mention a great performance of Ignas Razutis who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 11 points, 8 rebounds and 10 assists. Olimpas have a solid series of four victories in a row. They moved-up to second place. Perlas-MRU lost third consecutive game. They keep the twelfth position with 15 games lost. Olimpas' next round opponent will be Meresta (#8) in Pakruojis which should be theoretically an easy game. Perlas-MRU will play on the road against Gargzdai-Bremena (#17).
Sixteenth ranked Silute (8-17) crushed at home 17th ranked Gargzdai-Bremena (5-20) by 31 points 79-48, which is the biggest margin this round on Friday night. Dustin Heiman stepped up and scored 19 points and 4 assists for the winners. Silute's coach Justas Brazas felt very confident that he used 10 players and allowed the starting five to rest. Silute maintains sixteenth place with 8-17 record. Loser Gargzdai-Bremena keeps the seventeenth position with 20 games lost. Silute will face higher ranked Birstono (#13) in Kaunas in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Gargzdai-Bremena will play at home against Perlas-MRU (#12) in Vilnius.

There were no shocking results in the rest of the games of round 25: S.Marciulionio lost to Suduva-Mantinga on the opponent's court 80-86. Delikatesas outscored Nafta Universitetas in a home game 95-72. Birstono recorded a loss to Radviliskis on the road 80-69.
The most impressive stats of the last round was 28 points and 11 rebounds by Mantas Virbalas of Perlas-MRU.


Silute - Gargzdai 79-48

Sixteenth ranked Silute (8-17) crushed at home 17th ranked Gargzdai-Bremena (5-20) by 31 points 79-48, which is the biggest margin this round on Friday night. The game without a history. Silute led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. Silute outrebounded Gargzdai-Bremena 49-30 including a 34-21 advantage in defensive rebounds. American point guard Dustin Heiman (180-86, college: Abil.Christian) stepped up and scored 19 points and 4 assists for the winners and swingman Marius Kasiulevicius (198-82, college: Trinity Valley JC) chipped in 12 points and 6 rebounds. Silute's coach Justas Brazas felt very confident that he used 10 players and allowed the starting five to rest. At the losing side forward Laurynas Lucinskas (201-93) responded with 11 points and 5 rebounds and forward Marius Grigaitis (196-91) scored 9 points and 6 rebounds. Silute maintains sixteenth place with 8-17 record. Loser Gargzdai-Bremena keeps the seventeenth position with 20 games lost. Silute will face higher ranked Birstono (#13) in Kaunas in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Gargzdai-Bremena will play at home against Perlas-MRU (#12) in Vilnius.

Rather expected game in Marijampole where 10th ranked S.Marciulionio (13-12) was defeated by seventh ranked Suduva-Mantinga (16-9) 86-80 on Friday. The hosts trailed by 1 point after first quarter, but they rallied back to get the 6-point lead at the halftime and eventually won the game 86-80. Guard Zilvinas Kuklierius (180-85) stepped up and scored 28 points and 4 assists (on 11-of-14 shooting from the field) for the winners and forward Audrius Mineikis (201-77) chipped in 16 points and 7 rebounds. Suduva-Mantinga's coach Gintautas Zibuda used a ten-player rotation saving starting five for next games. At the losing side guard Marius Pociukonis (190-82) responded with 15 points and 5 assists and forward Evaldas Baniulis (201-87, college: S.Carolina) scored 16 points. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Suduva-Mantinga moved-up to fourth place, which they share with Triobet. Very predictable result in Joniskis where eleventh ranked Delikatesas (11-14) smashed bottom-ranked Nafta Universitetas (5-20) 95-72 on Friday. The game was mostly controlled by Delikatesas. Nafta Universitetas was better in fourth quarter 28-22. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Nafta Universitetas was plagued by 26 personal fouls down the stretch. Swingman Deividas Girdvila (196-90) stepped up and scored 14 points and 8 rebounds for the winners and forward Mindaugas Keras (200-85) chipped in 17 points and 6 rebounds. At the losing side forward Dainius Zvinklys (202-90) responded with a double-double by scoring 13 points and 10 rebounds and forward Donatas Norkus (196-90) scored 16 points and 7 rebounds. We cannot really consider it an upset in the game between close teams when 13th ranked Birstono (10-15) was defeated on the road by fourteenth ranked Radviliskis (9-15) 80-69 on Friday. Radviliskis dominated down low during the game scoring 48 of its points in the paint compared to Birstono's 22. Radviliskis forced 20 Birstono turnovers and outrebounded them 44-26 including a 28-16 advantage in defensive rebounds. Birstono was plagued by 24 personal fouls down the stretch. Forward Antanas Montrimavicius (199-87) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 17 points and 14 rebounds for the winners and forward Vaidas Trepocka (200-80, agency: Court Side) chipped in 18 points and 7 rebounds. Twelfth-ranked Perlas-MRU (10-15) gave a tough game to third ranked Olimpas (18-7) in Vilnius. The visitors from Plunge managed to secure only one-point victory 84-83. However their fans expected much easier game. Perlas-MRU was ahead by 4 points after three quarters before a 19-14 charge of Olimpas, which allowed them to win the game. Worth to mention a great performance of guard Ignas Razutis (185-87) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 11 points, 8 rebounds and 10 assists. Forward Mantas Kazonas (201-89) contributed with 20 points and 8 rebounds for the winners. Four Olimpas players scored in double figures. NKL top team - Mazeikiai (20-5) managed to deliver another win. This time they beat eighth ranked Zalgiris-Sabonio (14-11) 83-73. It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of Zalgiris-Sabonio. The game was mostly controlled by Mazeikiai. Zalgiris-Sabonio was better in third quarter 27-16. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. The game was decided in the last minutes when Mazeikiai won last quarter 25-16. Rokas Giedraitis (198-92) nailed 19 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists for the winning side and Belarusian center Aleh Kojenets (208-77, college: NC-Wilmington) accounted for 18 points and 6 rebounds. Statyba's coach Gintautas Regina rotated eleven players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Triobet moved-up to fourth place, which they share with Suduva-Mantinga.
