The Regular Season in NKL just ended. The round was exceptionally exciting as three games ended with a tiny margin. There was no lack of excitement in the last round games. The round ended with favorites losing the games and games ending by tiny margin.

The most important game in the last round took place in Kaunas between third ranked Olimpas (23-11) and seventh ranked Zalgiris-Sabonio (21-13) on Saturday night. Olimpas was crushed by Zalgiris-Sabonio on the road 94-71. The game was mostly controlled by Zalgiris-Sabonio. Olimpas managed to win fourth quarter 22-15. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They outrebounded Olimpas 44-25 including a 31-10 advantage in defensive rebounds. Zalgiris-Sabonio shot the lights out from three sinking 14 long-distance shots on high 53.8 percentage. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 25 assists. 24 personal fouls committed by Olimpas helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. Swingman Tomas Dimsa (195-94) scored 17 points and 7 rebounds to lead the charge for the winners and Justas Tamulis (194-94, agency: Beo Basket) chipped in 19 points during the contest. Zalgiris-Sabonio's coach Tomas Masiulis felt very confident that he used 10 players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. At the losing side forward Audrius Maneikis (203-84, college: Motlow St. CC) responded with 17 points and 7 rebounds. Zalgiris-Sabonio moved-up to sixth place. Newly promoted Olimpas keeps the third position with 11 games lost. They share it with Suduva-Mantinga.
Bottom-ranked Nafta Universitetas managed to get the second consecutive victory. This time they won against seventeenth-ranked Gargzdai-Bremena in Klaipeda 73-64. Point guard Deividas Anuzis (181-92) notched 18 points, 6 rebounds and 7 assists to lead the effort and Viktoras Chodosovskis supported him with 19 points and 8 rebounds. Even 19 points and 7 rebounds by forward Marius Grigaitis (196-91) did not help to save the game for Gargzdai-Bremena. Nafta Universitetas (7-27) moved-up to seventeenth place. Gargzdai-Bremena lost fourth consecutive game. They dropped to the bottom.
NKL top team - Mazeikiai (27-7) managed to deliver another win on Saturday. This time they beat fifth ranked Triobet (22-12) 80-68. It ended at the same time the five-game winning streak of Triobet. Arvydas Gydra fired 16 points and 7 rebounds (on 6-of-7 shooting from the field) for the winners. Martynas Linkevicius produced a double-double by scoring 17 points and 17 rebounds for lost side. Triobet's coach Kestutis Narusevicius rotated eleven players in this game, but that didn't help. Mazeikiai maintains first position with 27-7 record. Triobet at the other side keeps the fifth place with 12 games lost.
The game in Vilnius was also worth to mention about. Second ranked Dzukija (26-8) played at the court of 8th ranked Statyba (20-14). Dzukija defeated Statyba 90-77. Worth to mention a great performance of Zydrunas Kelys who helped to win the game recording 18 points and 4 assists (on 7-of-8 shooting from the field). Dzukija's coach Mindaugas Jarusevicius allowed to play the deep bench players saving starting five for next games. Dzukija have an impressive nine-game winning streak. Newly promoted Dzukija maintains second position with 26-8 record behind leader Mazeikiai. Statyba at the other side dropped to the seventh place with 14 games lost.
Fifteenth-ranked Ezerunas-Karys (10-24) gave a tough game to thirteenth ranked Delikatesas (14-20) in Joniskis on Saturday. Delikatesas managed to secure only one-point victory 81-80. However their fans expected easier game. Paulius Klemas scored 19 points and 6 assists (on 8-of-10 shooting from the field) to lead the charge for the winners. Delikatesas moved-up to twelfth place, which they share with Perlas-MRU. Ezerunas-Karys lost fourth consecutive game. They keep the fifteenth position with 24 games lost.

There were no shocking results in the other games in round 34: Silute was destroyed by S.Marciulionio on the opponent's court 99-70. Radviliskis managed to outperform Perlas-MRU in a home game 83-81. Meresta recorded a loss to Suduva-Mantinga on the road 73-70. Zanavykas was defeated by Birstono on its own court 64-71.
The most impressive stats of the last round was 34 points (!!!) and 4 assists by Robertas Bitinas of S.Marciulionio.


Statyba - Dzukija 77-90

The game in Vilnius was also worth to mention about. Second ranked Dzukija (26-8) played at the court of 8th ranked Statyba (20-14). Dzukija defeated Statyba 90-77. Statyba was ahead by 7 points at the halftime before a 50-30 second half run of Dzukija. Their players were unselfish on offense dishing 21 assists. Worth to mention a great performance of point guard Zydrunas Kelys (188-87) who helped to win the game recording 18 points and 4 assists (on 7-of-8 shooting from the field). American guard Bryan Harrison (188-84, college: Georgia Coll., agency: Global Sports Plaza) contributed with 8 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists for the winners. Dzukija's coach Mindaugas Jarusevicius allowed to play the deep bench players saving starting five for next games. point guard Ovidijus Varanauskas (187-91) replied with 16 points and 7 assists and forward Karolis Brusokas (200-91) added 13 points and 11 rebounds in the effort for Statyba. Five Statyba players scored in double figures. Dzukija have an impressive nine-game winning streak. Newly promoted Dzukija maintains second position with 26-8 record behind leader Mazeikiai. Statyba at the other side dropped to the seventh place with 14 games lost.

Nafta Universitetas - Gargzdai 73-64

Bottom-ranked Nafta Universitetas managed to get the second consecutive victory. This time they won against seventeenth-ranked Gargzdai-Bremena in Klaipeda 73-64. The hosts started the game with a very strong first quarter 24-9. But Gargzdai-Bremena won second period 22-16. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. The game was decided in the last minutes when Nafta Universitetas won last quarter 21-13. Point guard Deividas Anuzis (181-92) notched 18 points, 6 rebounds and 7 assists to lead the effort and forward Viktoras Chodosovskis (200-89) supported him with 19 points and 8 rebounds. Four Nafta Universitetas players scored in double figures. Even 19 points and 7 rebounds by forward Marius Grigaitis (196-91) did not help to save the game for Gargzdai-Bremena. point guard Dominikas Matutis (180-91) added 10 points and 6 assists for lost side. Nafta Universitetas (7-27) moved-up to seventeenth place. Gargzdai-Bremena lost fourth consecutive game. They dropped to the bottom.

Very expected game in Vilnius where 16th ranked Silute (10-24) was crushed by ninth ranked S.Marciulionio (19-15) 99-70 on Saturday. The game was mostly controlled by S.Marciulionio. Silute was better in third quarter 22-16. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. S.Marciulionio forced 19 Silute turnovers and outrebounded them 48-35 including 35 on the defensive glass. They shot the lights out from three sinking 14 long-distance shots on high 51.9 percentage. S.Marciulionio looked well-organized offensively handing out 23 assists. Point guard Robertas Bitinas (182-84) scored 34 points (!!!) and 4 assists to lead the charge for the winners and power forward Giedrius Staniulis (205-91) chipped in 15 points and 14 rebounds during the contest. Four S.Marciulionio players scored in double figures. At the losing side swingman Marius Kasiulevicius (198-82, college: Trinity Valley JC) responded with 21 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists and center Edgaras Sosnovskis (205-91) scored 8 points and 13 rebounds. S.Marciulionio have a solid three-game winning streak. They maintain ninth position with 19-15 record. Silute lost third consecutive game. They dropped to the fifteenth place with 24 games lost.

The game between closely ranked teams ended with eleventh ranked Radviliskis' (15-18) home victory over 12th ranked Perlas-MRU (14-20) 83-81 on Saturday. The hosts trailed by 9 points after first quarter, but they rallied back and won the game by 2 points. Radviliskis made 16-of-17 free shots (94.1 percent) during the game. Guard Vitalis Pancerevas (185-87, college: Weatherford JC) scored 16 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists to lead the charge for the winners and forward Antanas Montrimavicius (199-87) chipped in 17 points and 7 rebounds during the contest. At the losing side forward Antanas Udras (202-92) responded with a double-double by scoring 17 points and 12 rebounds and power forward Mantas Virbalas (203-88) scored 15 points and 7 rebounds. Four Radviliskis and five Perlas-MRU players scored in double figures. Radviliskis have a solid four-game winning streak. They maintain eleventh position with 15-18 record. Loser Perlas-MRU keeps the twelfth place with 20 games lost.

Not a big story in a game in Marijampole where 10th ranked Meresta (16-18) was edged by fourth ranked Suduva-Mantinga (23-11) 73-70 on Saturday. However just three-point win is not that big difference and the fans of host team counted on more convincing victory. The hosts trailed by 6 points after three quarters before their 24-15 charge, which allowed them to win the game. Suduva-Mantinga outrebounded Meresta 39-28 including 24 on the defensive glass. Forward Marius Valukonis (198-88) scored 16 points and 8 rebounds to lead the charge for the winners and forward Audrius Mineikis (201-77) chipped in 12 points and 12 rebounds during the contest. Suduva-Mantinga's coach Gintautas Zibuda used a ten-player rotation in such tough game. At the losing side guard Tomas Gaidamavicius (191-82) responded with 12 points, 5 rebounds and 7 assists and center Julius Jucikas (205-89) scored 11 points and 5 rebounds. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Suduva-Mantinga moved-up to third place, which they share with Olimpas. Loser Meresta keeps the tenth position with 18 games lost.

Fifteenth-ranked Ezerunas-Karys (10-24) gave a tough game to thirteenth ranked Delikatesas (14-20) in Joniskis on Saturday. Delikatesas managed to secure only one-point victory 81-80. However their fans expected easier game. The hosts were tied at the half but managed to speed up in last two quarters eventually winning the game. Strangely Ezerunas-Karys outrebounded Delikatesas 39-26 including 24 on the defensive glass. Guard Paulius Klemas (186-91) scored 19 points and 6 assists (on 8-of-10 shooting from the field) to lead the charge for the winners and forward Mindaugas Keras (200-85) chipped in 12 points and 9 rebounds during the contest. At the losing side center Marius Janisius (203-77) responded with a double-double by scoring 15 points and 11 rebounds and guard Tomas Grybauskas (193-89) scored 14 points and 8 rebounds. Delikatesas moved-up to twelfth place, which they share with Perlas-MRU. Ezerunas-Karys lost fourth consecutive game. They keep the fifteenth position with 24 games lost.

NKL top team - Mazeikiai (27-7) managed to deliver another win on Saturday. This time they beat fifth ranked Triobet (22-12) 80-68. It ended at the same time the five-game winning streak of Triobet. The hosts trailed by 3 points after three quarters before their 32-17 charge, which allowed them to win the game. Mazeikiai dominated on the defensive end, holding Triobet to just 7 points in third quarter. Forward Arvydas Gydra (206-89) fired 16 points and 7 rebounds (on 6-of-7 shooting from the field) for the winners. Rokas Giedraitis (198-92) chipped in 18 points and 6 rebounds. Forward Martynas Linkevicius (197-85) produced a double-double by scoring 17 points and 17 rebounds and guard Rytis Juknevicius (187-93) added 19 points respectively for lost side. Triobet's coach Kestutis Narusevicius rotated eleven players in this game, but that didn't help. Mazeikiai maintains first position with 27-7 record. Triobet at the other side keeps the fifth place with 12 games lost.

There was a surprise result in Sakiai where fourteenth ranked Birstono (13-21) beat higher ranked Zanavykas (20-14) 71-64 on Saturday. Birstono forced 19 Zanavykas turnovers. Strangely Zanavykas outrebounded Birstono 47-32 including a 23-7 advantage in offensive rebounds. Zanavykas was plagued by 28 personal fouls down the stretch. Point guard Audrius Ramonaitis (180-92) scored 22 points to lead the charge for the winners and Simas Raupys (195-94) chipped in 13 points during the contest. At the losing side forward Marijus Uzupis (197-93) responded with a double-double by scoring 15 points and 15 rebounds and guard Edgaras Stanionis (193-88) produced a double-double by scoring 12 points and 10 rebounds. Zanavykas' coach Giedrius Zibenas tested ten players, but that didn't help to avoid defeat in this game. Birstono maintains fourteenth position with 13-21 record. Newly promoted Zanavykas dropped to the seventh place with 14 games lost.

Lithuanian national team head coach Dainius Adomaitis selected Benas Matkevicius , Mindaugas Brazys and Ramunas Siskauskas to join his coaching staff, as reported by Donatas Urbonas. Siskauskas has been part of his home country's success in the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, as well as in the 2003 gold medal in Sweden's Eurobasket and the broze one in Spain in 2007.
