NKL Round 12: Vytis defeat Silute in the closest game of the week - Feb 19, 2017

There are only two more rounds left in the Second Stage in NKL.

The most exciting game of round 12 in the NKL took place in Sakiai. This derby game ended with only three-point defeat on the road of 6th ranked Silute (18-18) to seventh ranked Vytis (19-18) 97-94 in the game for the sixth place. Silute was trailing by 1 point at halftime but managed to get 5-point lead after three quarters before a 26-18 charge of Vytis, which allowed them to win the game. They also forced 22 Silute turnovers. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 27 assists. Worth to mention a great performance of center Edvinas Jezukevicius (207-90) who helped to win the game recording 27 points (on 12-of-14 shooting from the field) and Gytis Radzevicius (195-95) who added 21 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists during the contest. The best for the losing side was Simas Raupys (195-94) with 30 points and 6 rebounds. Silute's coach Robertas Kuncaitis rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Vytis have a solid three-game winning streak. They moved-up to sixth place. Silute at the other side dropped to the seventh position with 18 games lost. Vytis will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Silute will play on the road against Perlas-MRU (#5) in Vilnius and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
Very important is a home loss of second ranked Nafta-Uni. (25-12) against fourth ranked Rasai (22-14) on Saturday night. Host Nafta-Uni. was defeated by Rasai in Klaipeda 86-72. The winners were led by point guard Tomas Galeckas (183-94) who scored that evening 24 points and 9 assists and Sarunas Vingelis supported him with 27 points and 4 assists. Rasai's coach Giedrius Kurtinaitis allowed to play the deep bench players saving starting five for next games. Even 13 points, 5 rebounds and 8 assists by point guard Deividas Anuzis (182-92) did not help to save the game for Nafta-Uni.. Rasai moved-up to third place, which they share with Telsiai. Nafta-Uni. lost third consecutive game. They keep the second position with 12 games lost. Rasai will play against league's leader Suduva-Mantinga in Marijampole in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. Nafta-Uni. will play on the road against Telsiai in Telsiu and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
NKL top team - Suduva-Mantinga (29-7) had no problems winning another game on Saturday. This time they crushed fifth ranked Perlas-MRU (20-16) in Marijampole 95-74. It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of Perlas-MRU. The best player for the winners was Dominykas Domarkas who scored 20 points. At the other side the best for losing team was Arnas Berucka who recorded 25 points and 7 rebounds. Perlas-MRU's coach Arvydas Gronskis gave up on the game allowing to play twelve players seeing no chance for a win. Suduva-Mantinga maintains first position with 29-7 record. Loser Perlas-MRU keeps the fifth place with 16 games lost. Suduva-Mantinga will meet Rasai (#4) in the next round. Perlas-MRU will play against Silute and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

There were no shocking results in the other games in round 12: Zalgiris II won against Mazeikiai on the opponent's court 72-65. Palanga managed to outperform KTU in a home game 91-78. Bottom-ranked Petrochema recorded a loss to Ezerunas-Karys on the road 66-57.

Mazeikiai - Zalgiris II 65-72

Very expected game when 12th ranked Mazeikiai (13-23) was defeated at home by eighth ranked Zalgiris II (21-15) 72-65 on Saturday. The guests took control from the first minutes by winning the initial quarter 17-12. But Mazeikiai won second period 18-15. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. The best player for the winners was power forward Laurynas Birutis (213-97) who had a double-double by scoring 20 points and 11 rebounds (on 9-of-10 shooting from the field). Guard Kristupas Zemaitis (192-96) chipped in 17 points and 6 rebounds. Zalgiris II's coach Tomas Masiulis used a ten-player rotation which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. At the other side the best for losing team was Mantas Serksnas (200-96) who recorded 22 points and forward Rytis Biliartas (200-91) added 9 points and 9 rebounds respectively. Zalgiris II have a solid three-game winning streak. They maintain eighth position with 21-15 record. Loser Mazeikiai dropped to the eleventh place with 23 games lost. They share the position with KTU. Zalgiris II will meet at home Delikatesas (#10) in the next round. Mazeikiai will play against Petrochema in Jonava and hope to secure a win.

Very important is a home loss of second ranked Nafta-Uni. (25-12) against fourth ranked Rasai (22-14) on Saturday night. Host Nafta-Uni. was defeated by Rasai in Klaipeda 86-72. It was a very close game until the last quarter, when Rasai's pressure prevailed and they won that period 19-10 extending their advantage to 14 points. The winners were led by point guard Tomas Galeckas (183-94) who scored that evening 24 points and 9 assists and guard Sarunas Vingelis (191-89) supported him with 27 points and 4 assists. Rasai's coach Giedrius Kurtinaitis allowed to play the deep bench players saving starting five for next games. Suduva-Mantinga - Perlas-MRU 95-74

NKL top team - Suduva-Mantinga (29-7) had no problems winning another game on Saturday. This time they crushed fifth ranked Perlas-MRU (20-16) in Marijampole 95-74. It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of Perlas-MRU. The game was mostly controlled by Suduva-Mantinga. Perlas-MRU managed to win fourth quarter 20-15. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Suduva-Mantinga made 19-of-24 free shots (79.2 percent) during the game. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. The best player for the winners was guard Dominykas Domarkas (190-92) who scored 20 points. Guard Evaldas Saulys (190-93) chipped in 14 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists. Four Suduva-Mantinga players scored in double figures. At the other side the best for losing team was forward Arnas Berucka (195-97) who recorded 25 points and 7 rebounds and guard Margiris Normantas (193-96) added 15 points respectively. Rather predictable result when ninth ranked Palanga (18-19) defeated at home 11th ranked KTU (13-23) 91-78 on Saturday. The hosts trailed by 2 points after first quarter, but they stormed back to get the 17-point lead at the halftime and eventually won the game 91-78. Palanga made 22-of-27 free shots (81.5 percent) during the game. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 25 assists. The best player for the winners was American guard Raijon Kelly (190-93, college: Angelo St.) who scored 14 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists. Mantvydas Staselis (189-94) chipped in 19 points (on 8-of-10 shooting from the field). Five Palanga players scored in double figures. At the other side the best for losing team was point guard Matas Sapiega (178-90) who recorded 21 points and 7 assists and point guard Martynas Zigmantavicius (187-96) added 10 points respectively. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Palanga maintains ninth position with 18-19 record. Newly promoted KTU keeps the eleventh place with 23 games lost. They share the position with Mazeikiai. Palanga will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. KTU will play against Ezerunas-Karys (#13) in Moletai and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
