The Lviv outfit got to a better start and led 18:15 after one quarter of action. Politekhnika continued to pile up the lead and stretched the gap to as many as 13 points at the interval. But Odessa was a different team coming off the locker room. Justin Love orchestrated a comeback effort that allowed Odessa to cut the distance. Odessa drew things level late in the game and finally Wayne Wallace accounted for a go-ahead bucket with just 2 seconds remaining. Kuzmin had a chance to save the game but his desperate try rimmed out. Brian Tolbert paced the hosts with 23 points. Otis Hill produced 17 points and 12 boards, while Justin Love provided 22 points in the win. Andrei Kalnichenko scored 11 points and made 3 rebounds. Yaroslav Zubrytskyi replied with 18 points and 7 rebounds for Lviv. In Round 1 BC Odessa that seriously bolstered the squad in the preseason took on Goverla at home. The hosts jumped to an early lead and maintained it throughout the opening period. They enjoyed a 24:13 lead after ten minutes of action. Odessa overwhelmed their opponents in the second quarter clearing off to a 51:23 distance at the interval. However Goverla refused to fold. They capitalized on some sloppiness from the home team and cut the distance to just 10 points. But Odessa never allowed the visitors to come closer and secured the initial win at the tournament. Justin Love and Vladyslav Podolyan came up with 14 points apiece to lead Odessa. Otis Hill and Artem Shvets added 10 points each for the winners. Andrei Kalnichenko posted 5 points and had 4 rebounds in the opener. |

Moldovan U16 National Team earned the spot at the pedestal at the European championship in Division C. They defeated hosting Gibraltar in the consolation final to claim Bronze medals. The game turned into a real basketball thriller that lasted for 50 minutes. Moldova used two overtimes before celebrating a dramatic win at the end. The hosts got to a better start to the game. Gracia and Sercombe capped the first frame with three straight trebles and Gibraltar piled up a 16:12 lead after ten minutes of action. Gracia fired 5 more points early in the second stanza and Moldova found themselves down by 7 points. The home side maintained the gap throughout the second period and enjoyed a 29:22 lead at halftime. Aston-Fox and Sercombe opened up a double-digit lead for Gibraltar at the start of the third period. But Moldovan players stayed close and Mescoi and Cojuhari clipped the distance to a single point with one quarter to go. Cojuhari fired beyond the arc to tip off the fourth term and Moldova were in the driving seat at 45:43. The lead changed hands for several times throughout the final stanza before Mescois three-pointer gave Moldova a 59:55 lead with just over a minute left in regulation. But Gibraltar found time to answer. Sercombe converted back-to-back layups to force the first extra term. Aston-Fox and Lagares propelled the hosts to 65:61 advantage in overtime but this time it was Moldova to come from behind. Carali nailed 4 freebies in the final seconds and the teams headed into the second extra frame. Mescoi drained 7 points in it and Moldova pulled away with a sizzling 75:69 victory at the end. Carali finished the game with massive 24 points and 22 boards to pace Moldova. Mescoi had 22 points and 12 boards in a winning case. Gracia answered with 21 points for Gibraltar. Aston-Fox secured 15 points and 20 caroms in a loss.

Welsh U16 National Team earned the spot in the European Championship in Division C Final. Yesterday they outlasted Moldova to advance to the championship game. There Wales will face their neighbours Scotland on Tuesday. Moldova will play against Gibraltar in the consolation final. Wales opened the game confidently as Daniel Pulman scored quick 5 points to put them in front. He teamed up with Kilmartin to knock back-back to trebles and Wales led 18:15 after ten minutes of action. Cojuhari scored 7 straight points for Moldova to open the second period as they surged ahead 22:20. However Daniel Pulman and Moore kept Wales close. Soon a couple of treys from Kilmartin and Moore allowed Wales to spur in front 37:30. Pulman crowned the first half with two free throws to make it 39:32 for Wales at the interval. Daniel Pulman canned 8 points early in the third stanza and Moldova trailed by 15. Wales maintained the margin throughout the third stanza and enjoyed a 12-point cushion heading into the fourth term. However two trebles from Melniciuc and one more from Mescoi cut the deficit to just 5 points midway through the fourth quarter. But it was once again Daniel Pulman to ensure the winning outcome for the Welsh side. He came up with 5 points in the late stages and brought Wales to the victory. Daniel Pulman finished with impressive 36 points, 8 boards and 6 assists. Moore and Kilmartin had 10 points apiece for the winners. Carali answered with 19 points and 9 boards for Moldova. Melniciuc had 11 points and 11 boards in defeat.

Moldovan U16 National Team celebrated their third consecutive win at the European championship in Division C. They held off the hosts Gibraltar and clinched the first place in the preliminary Pool A. Moldova will now take on Wales in the semifinal battle. Gibraltar also booked the semifinal ticket despite loss. They will face Scotland in the playoffs. The start of the game was for Gibraltar. Gracia and Power drained three-pointers and the home team led 8:3 early on. But Moldova soon took over and jumped ahead to lead 15:12 after the starting frame. Gracia nailed another trey to square things up early in the second stanza but Moldova had an answer in store. They went on a 9:0 run to take a sigh of relief. Moldovan team kept the hosts at bay through the rest of the quarter and rolled to the main break ahead 34:24. Cojuhari and Mescoi dropped back-to-back trebles and Carali added 6 consecutive points for Moldova to pile up a 46:24 lead early in the third period. Moldova outgunned Gibraltar 24:2 in the third quarter and eventually drove to a comfortable victory. Denis Melniciuc poured in 21 points for Moldova. Vladimir Carali delivered 15 points and 11 caroms in a win. Brad Power replied with 10 points in defeat.

Moldovan U16 National Team grabbed their second consecutive win at the start of the European Championship in Division C. Today they held off San Marino to go on top of preliminary Group A. Guerra put San Marino ahead 3:0 at the very beginning of the game. But Moldova soon drew things even and the teams rolled to a 12:12 tie-game after ten minutes of action. Ribac scored 5 points in a row to open the second frame and put Moldova in front. Moretti and Stefanelli cut the deficit but Moldova kept on forcing the issue. Carali scored 4 points and Melniciuc capped the first half with a layup for a 30:17 Moldovan advantage. Melniciuc scored 5 points in an 8:0 rally from Moldova at the start of the third quarter. He tallied 9 points in the third quarter and Moldova led comfortably 50:30 heading into the final period. Giancecchi sparked hope for San Marino as he netted 4 straight points early in the fourth but the effort was quickly denied Cojuhari. Modlova kept their opponents at bay through the rest of the contest and finalized an impressive victory. Denis Melniciuc led all scorers with 14 points. Nicolai Cojuhari added 11 points in a win. San Marino answered with 13 points from Davide Macina. Three players came up with 6 points apiece in a losing case. Moldova booked their semifinal spot and would wrap preliminary action against hosting Gibraltar tomorrow.

Moldovan U16 National team got to a winning start of the European championship in Division C campaign. The event tipped off in Gibraltar and saw eight teams taking part. Moldova got into preliminary Pool A together with Andorra, Gibraltar and San Marino. Another group comprised Malta, Scotland, Monaco and Wales. Moldova met with Andorra in the starting game. Andorra began the game aggressively as Palleja and Casellas drained back-to-back three-pointers to lift the team in front. Cojuhari nailed 5 points to keep Moldova in visibility. Soon Mescoi scored 8 straight points for Moldovan team and lead them ahead 15:13. Calvis and Cerda capped the first frame with 4 points and Andorra claimed a 17:15 advantage after the first quarter. Moldova struck back early in the second quarter as they surged ahead through 4 consecutive points from Melniciuc. The lead changed hands for several times before Kaigodorov sealed the first half outcome at 28:23 for Moldova. Modlovan team stretched the gap to 10 points heading into the fourth term. Azerbaijan clinched the European Championship title defending their 2006 campaign success. They needed to overcome a 10-point halftime deficit to grab a dramatic victory over Moldova in yesterdays final. Moldova looked impressive throughout the tournament and proved their ambitions early in the contest as Eugeniu Scripcaru (205-F-83) and Melinic put them in front. They both teamed up for 15 out of 24 Moldovan points in the first frame to keep Azerbaijan at a 7-point distance. Tahir Bakhshiyev (199-F-82) and Anar Sariyev (196-G-81) knocked down back-to-back baskets to open the second stanza. Moldova responded with consecutive three-pointers from Rulevski and Maxim Rusu (196-G-88) to stay ahead. Eugeniu Scripcaru's jump shot late in the first half marked a 16-point lead for Moldova. However Davit Barbakadze (204-F-82) and Kitayev dropped two three-pointers to finalize the half with Azerbaijan trailing by 10. Tahir Bakhshiyev scored 8 points early in the third quarter and Azerbaijan cut the deficit to 6 points. But Maxim Rusu kept Moldova alert as they led by 7 points at the end of the third frame. Anar Sariyev and Fedorenco traded treys to start the final quarter and then Fedorenco nailed another one to make task hardly achievable for Azerbaijan. But the team never surrendered. Davit Barbakadze completed a three-point play following his layup, while Fuad Niftaliyev (178-G-80) drained a three-pointer and Azerbaijan clipped the distance to 4 points. Then Slozhenitsin nailed 4 straight points to square things up at 76 with just over two minutes remaining. Moldova marked their dominance right from the start as Oprea and Eugeniu Melinic (196-F/G-79) put Moldovan team ahead 4:0. But Andorra quickly responded through 5 points from Xavier Galera (182-G-82) and grabbed a 10:9 lead midway through the first term. But Moldova looked persistent as Maxim Rusu (196-G-88), Eugeniu Melinic and Priscepnii retained the lead and stretched it to 23:15 at the end of the first quarter. Maxim Rusu nailed 5 straight points early in the second period and Moldova jumped to a 30:18 advantage. Then Eugeniu Melinic added 5 more points and the cushion started to look comfortable at 20-point mark. But Andorra refused to give up. Xavier Galera, Marin and Farras clipped the deficit to 12 points at halftime. Moldova got to a better start of the third period when Fedorenco nailed 4 points and Maxim Rusu fired from beyond the arc for 20+ advantage. The lead changed hands for a number of time throughout the third stanza before Davit Barbakadze squared things up at 47 at the end of the term. Melinic, Vitaliy Oprea (200-F-86) and Evgeni Scripcaru netted 9 straight points to open the final stanza and Moldova claimed a 56:47 lead. Azerbaijan came within three points following a three-pointer from Bakhshiyev with under 3 minutes remaining in regulation. But Evgeni Scripcaru and Melinic responded with 4 straight points to restore a 9-point buffer with 29 seconds left. Azerbaijan never recovered and suffered their first loss at the tournament. Melinic provided 24 points and 10 boards to pace Moldova. Evgeni Scripcaru added 19 points and 7 boards, while Tcaci added 15 points for the winners. Davit Barbakadze had 18 points and 14 boards for Azerbaijan. Fuad Niftaliyev came up with 13 points, 6 boards and 6 assists in a loss. The teams will now await the result of Scotland vs. Andorra clash to get to know their semifinal opponents.

Cassaglia scored a layup to put Gibraltar in charge. However Moldova quickly hit back. Maxim Rusu (196-G-88) and Tcaci nailed back-to-back trebles to put Moldova up for good. Melinic and Tcaci extended the run for Moldova as they piled up a 22:12 lead at the first intermission. Tcaci, Maxim Rusu and Evgeni Scripcaru (202-F-83) nailed three consecutive bombs from beyond the arc to open the second period. Gibraltar struggled to slow down their opponents and trailed by 27 points at halftime. Nartov and Caputerco continued long-range bombardment as Moldova widened the gap to 39 points midway through the third stanza. Moldova never looked back in the final quarter and celebrated a cruising win at the end. Vladimir Priscepnii (200-F-88) provided 16 points and 5 boards to lead Moldova. San Marino got to a better start as they looked too good for Moldovan team in the early minutes. San Marino accounted for 29 points in the first period and led by 13 into the second frame. But Moldova gradually found the right tempo and started to cut the deficit. They outgunned their opponents 30:13 in the second stanza to grab a 46:42 lead at halftime. San Marino obviously ran out of steam in the second half as Moldova took over the control. They limited their counterparts to 8 points in the third stanza and stretched the gap to 13 points heading into the final period. San Marino raised the tempo but one of the tournaments favorites were ready for the effort and easily held San Marino at bay in the final stanza. Oleg Doros (204-C-68) topscored for Moldova with 21 points. Vladimir Priscepnii (200-F-88) contributed 19 points and 9 boards, while Platon Jorneac (200-F-88) had 18 points and 15 boards for the winners. San Marino answered with 21 points from Elismar Guerra.
