Womens League
There were three other comfortable victories in the Womens League last weekend for the championships top three teams Depiro McDonalds, Luxol and Hibs Medsea as focus now shifts on the second phase which starts on April 17.

The teams in the championship pool retain the points won in the opening stage. However, in the next phase only match winners will be awarded points.

Depiro, the leaders, took to the court for their match against Athleta without without their top-scorer Kalia Agius. They applied some hot pressure after the interval to beat mid-table side Athleta 60-30.

Athleta also had their top scorer Lynne Sciberras missing. They trailed 15-8 at the end of the first quarter and changed ends 26-18 behind. Depiro were more effective after the interval and 13 consecutive points opened the way for their handsome victory.

Second-placed Luxol took control mid-way through the first quarter in their match against Loyola and never looked back. Leading 20-11 after the first ten minutes, Luxol continued to dictate matters to open a 43-21 advantage at half-time.

With Loyola unable to raise their game, Luxol throttled to a sound 86-38 victory.

Hibs were never troubled by bottom-placed Mtarfa. At half-time, the champions led 53-5. They continued to dominate for a 90-17 victory.

In the other league match last weekend, Starlites had the better of St Andrews to claim a platonic sixth place in the standings on basket difference in direct encounters.

It was St Andews who had the better start to lead 11-3. Starlites improved and were only a basket behind at the end of the quarter 15-13. They led 21-19 at one point in the second quarter but St Andrews hit back for a 24-21 lead at half-time.

This was a ding-dong affair with Starlites starting the last ten minutes 33-30 ahead. It was at this juncture, however, that St Andrews collapsed, allowing their opponents to claim a 52-39 victory.

Standings: Depiro 27 (13-1), Luxol 26 (12-2), Hibs 25 (11-3), Loyola 21 (7-7), Athleta 19 (6-7), Starlites 17 (3-11), St Andrews 17 (3-11), Mtarfa 13 (0-13).

Top scorers: K. Agius (Depiro) 231, Lucienne Bezzina (174-F-79) (Hibs) 221, S. DeMartino (Luxol ) 196.

Sunday: BOV KO final 14.30 Hibs vs Depiro.

Luxol beat Hibs to retain title - May 2, 2016

For the umpteenth time this season, Luxol recovered from a slow start to turn the tables on their opponents. This time their escape act saw them chalking up a crucial win that meant they had secured their 15th title in history. Luxol's trump card was their superior outside shooting percentage with captain Mandy Mercieca taking centre-stage as she potted 19 points. Stephanie De Martino (184-F-93) had a quiet game by her own lofty standards but she did put in some valuable defensive work fo...   [read more]
