Moldova - Malta 23-72

Malta had no mercy for Moldova in Day One of the 2013 European Championship for Small Countries (Division C). Malta celebrated impressive 23-72 against its rival improving to 1-0 score in Group A. Scotland was better than Azerbaijan yesterday, so Malta and Scotland share the first place in this pool after Round One. Ashleigh Vella (188-F/C-90) stepped up for the winners with double-double of 13 points and 13 rebounds. Rebecca Thoresen (178-F/G-78) also scored 13 points and Elena Cassar (179-PG-92) added 12 points, plus 7 rebounds. Moldova did not have anyone with double digits in scoring. Anastasiya Lavric (170-PG-90) and A Causen posted 7 and 4 pts respectively. Malta dominated at the both sides of the court and they only slowed down in the last period when (of course) everything was already clear. Quarters: 3-27, 6-20, 3-15, 11-10. Malta will meet Scotland today and the winner will mostly likely end as No.1 of this group at the end of the Preliminary Round. Moldova will meet Azerbaijan.

Moldova: Anastasiya Lavric 7, Ala Causan (178-SG-75) 4+4 boards
Malta: Ashleigh Vella 13+13 boards, Rebecca Thoresen 13, Elena Cassar 12+7 boards

Louis Borg Cup title for Athleta - 6 days ago
The women final produced a nerve-wracking finale as the cup could have finished anywhere although finally Gzira Athleta reaped the benefits of their first game win so as to hold out and win the Louis Borg Cup for the first time in their history and the second seasonal honour after their success in the St James MBA Shield. The first game produced a very low scoring game as both sides were quite erratic in their shooting having quite low percentages from the field. Starlites, who were also...   [read more]
