Samuel
Deguara
Niagara River Lions (NBL Canada) signed 25-year old Maltese ex-international center Samuel Deguara (223-131kg-91). He played recently at Erie Bay Hawks (D-League) in the U.S.. The last season Deguara played at La Sidreria Ferrol CB (EBA) in Spanish league. In 11 games he had 12.5ppg, 9.5rpg and 1.5bpg. He also played at Viten Getafe (LEB Silver) in Spanish league earlier that season. But in 5 games he recorded just 1.4ppg and 1.8rpg. Deguara also spent pre-season at Baloncesto Fuenlabrada (Liga Endesa) in Spanish league earlier that year. The most of previous (13-14) season he spent at Bupa (Powerade League) in Malta. In 17 games he recorded very impressive stats: 29.5ppg, 24.1rpg and 1.4apg in 2013-14 season. Deguara was also tried-out by Grissin Bon RE (Serie A) in Italian league earlier that season.
Last year he was drafted by Erie Bay Hawks (D-League) in sixth round (98th overall).
The list of the past achievements is quite long as among others Deguara was voted Eurobasket.com All-European Championship for Small Countries 1st Team in 2014.
He was also a member of Maltese international program for some years. Deguara played for Maltese Senior National Team between 2008 and 2014 and previously for U18 National Team back in 2009. He represented Malta at the European Championship for Small Countries in Gibraltar two years ago. Deguara's team won Silver and his stats at that event were 4 games: Score-2 (18.8ppg), Reb-1 (15.0rpg), Blocks-1 (2.8bpg), FGP: 65.1%, FT: 64.0%.
Deguara has played previously professionally in Serbia (Partizan) and Italy (Caorle).
He could be described: A young giant who could become the next European basketball sensation. His mom is 6-8, he's been yet measured at almost 7-4, and he is enough coordinated and skilled to end in double-double any game at cadet level he plays.
Sam is the tallest basketball player in the history of the Maltese basketball. He has a great wingspan and very good vision in the air that makes him really very effective in defence against his rivals. He displays a nice ripped frame, nicely strong for his age and virtually with no fat. Obviously, he will still need to gain some weight, but there's time for that given the fact that he is only seventeen. Sam needs to improve his shooting; even though he's fairly solid from mid-range distances he doesn't take many tries. In his weaknesses is the really zero result in the low post and in the paint even though he is so tall he can't control his body and his arms with the ball and the basket he needs a lot of coordination. Sam has quite good basketball IQ, he needs to work his dribble and his one on one offensive technique as sometimes "stacks" and forced to an easy error in the paint rather than a quick dunk he tries to triple. Benetton Treviso and the coaching team over there will definitely help him and will give him the best feasible knowledge in order to help him for the future

European Leagues Assist NBA's World Domination - 5 days ago
The NBA is experiencing a gilded age. Clubs have never been more valuable, television contracts have never been more lucrative, and investors are chomping at the bit to invest in the league. One of the reasons The Association has been turned into a license to print money is basketball is played all over the world, especially in Europe. Next to football, there's not a more popular team sport on the globe. It's interesting that on the world stage, basketball is second to football. Yet, in...   [read more]
