Champions Falken Cynergi Virtus took the first lead in the final of the Bank of Valletta league when they beat Floriana Cafe del Mar 76-62. Virtus had a strong start to the game and with a strong run in the opening minutes of the game opened an advantage that they maintained until the end despite Floriana's comeback especially in the second quarter. Virtus had less turnovers than their opponents who played a tight defense on Chad Patus (203-F-87, college: Belm.Abbey). Champions started the match with a break of 11-0 with Jacob Formosa points and Chris Santo (196-F, college: St.Anselm) and a Shawn Pace triple. The coach of Floriana Mario Tabone called an early time-out and their first points came from Nikola Vasovic and Chad Patus. Virtus increased the advantage with points by Formosa and a Peter Shoults (168-G-85) triple to lead 21-4. Vasovic and Patus replied for Floriana but Virtus closed the first session in front 27-10. In the second period, with Floriana changed to a man to man defense as Virtus suddenly found difficulty in making the points but their defense remained compact. Floriana had an 8-0 run with points by Nigel Sultana (191-F-91) points Andrew Micallef Trigona. Santo and David Bugeja replied for Virtus however Floriana but closed the half by seven consecutive points as they reduced the gap to five points 33-28. After the break, both teams started answering each other with Santo and Vasovic netting several points for their teams. Virtus had Formosa points for Virtus and after a Lee Ross triple for Floriana, champions had five more points without reply to end the session 11 points ahead 55-44. Virtus opened the last period with two more baskets from Formosa and Santo. Floriana replied with three pointers from Patus and Vasovic as Shoults replied with a triple for Virtus. Champions continued to increase their lead with another 10-1 run including a Formosa trey and opened again a 19 point lead 72-53. Floriana hit back with seven consecutive points including a Patus triple but Virtus were still a long way ahead as they closed the match with baskets by David Bugeja to win the match 76-62 and take the first advantage in the final series.
