Floriana MCP Car Parks started their commitments in the St. James Shield with victory over Hibernians 78-70. Floriana opened the game with an 8-0 run and after Hibs replied with a Simon Attard triple, Chad Patus (203-F-87, college: Belm.Abbey) and Clayton Calleja had more trey for Foriana. Alvaro Lizaur replied for Hibs however Floriana closed the period with a triple by Nikola Vasovic 25-14. In the second period both teams replied and near ther end both teams had three pointers and Floriana were 40-26 up at half-time. After the interval Hibs improved their game and after an initial basket for Floriana by Calleja, they made a 13-0 run with a Luke Farrugia triple together with points by Kieron Caruana and Lizaur. Floriana recovered as Sean Borg netted consecutive points together with Patus but Hibs had another 8-0 break to level the score 50-50. Floriana closed the period with two baskets by Calleja and Borg for a 54-50. In the last period, Floriana increased their advantage after a 9-0 run. Hibs also replied again as they went for an 8-0 run to reduce the deficit to 3 points. Floriana managed to maintain the lead till the end of the game to win 78-70.

Bupa Luxol began their shield commitments with a victory against Starlites 82-51. The match started with three pointers on each side by Ivan Mitrovic for Starlites and Marco Mercieca and American Pierce Cumpstone (203-F-94) for Luxol. Luxol ended the first session in front 24-16 after two treys by Jean Paul Schembri. Luxol opened the second session with 7 consecutive points and after more Mitrovic points for Starlites, they made a run of 9-3and were 45-27 ahead at half time. In the third quartet the rythm was much lower on both sides although Luxol increased their advantage. Starlites had points by Nicola Mitrovic before points by youngster Keith Dimech for Luxol. In the last session Luxol continued opened with a 10-3 run to win the game 82-51.

Defending champion Bupa Luxol (Division 1) landed 24-year old American center Kyle Meyer (208-104kg-93, agency: KMG Sports Management). He just graduated from Houston (NCAA). In 32 games he averaged only 2.3ppg and 3.6rpg last season. As mentioned above Meyer is just out of the college and it will be his first season in pro basketball. Telstar Hesperange (N2) inked 23-year old American forward Pierce Cumpstone (203-88kg-94, college: Stonehill). He played most recently at Bupa in Maltese Division 1. He helped them to win the league title (twice). Cumpstone received CoSIDA NCAA Division II Academic All-District 1 1st Team award in 2016 at his college time. Cheshire Phoenix (BBL) tabbed 25-year old Maltese international forward Tevin Falzon (203-102kg-92, college: Sacred Heart). He played most recently at Zornotza in Spanish LEB Silver. In 21 games he averaged 5.0ppg and 3.6rpg last season. Falzon helped them to make it to the final.
