(15-15) (23-22) (16-8) (20-13)

Gzira Athleta made them three honors this season as they won the St. James Hospital Shield for the 9th time in their history. It was a balanced affar until the break as Floriana's offensive rebounds caused problems to Athleta's defence. However after the interval, Athleta began to draw away. The lead changed hands for several times in the first quarter and the final minute that a Peter Shoults trey gave Athleta a basket advantage but Chad Patus (203-F-87, college: Belm.Abbey) replied for Floriana to level the score at the end of the session 15-15. In the second quarter, Athleta had a 10-2 run with treys from Josiah Whitehead (198-F-86, college: Robert Morris) and David Camilleri (SG). Patus also netted a triple for the greens however Athleta opened a good lead 33-25 after two triples from Roderick Vella (180-PG-85) and Billy Zammit. Floriana came back and another Patus trey gave them the lead but Shoults's free-shots saw Atheta going for the break in front 38-37. In the third quarter, both teams were still close however a couple of referees decisions caused protests from the Floriana clan and they suffered technical fouls and this gave Athleta another 10 point lead 52-42 as they went for the final period 9 points ahead 54-45. In the last quarter Floriana opened with a short 6-2 run but then Athleta hit them strong with a 12-0 run with Vella and Zammit triples. Athleta's advantage was heavy and Floriana couldn't reduce it enough and Athleta claimed the victory on a 74-58 score to win the shield once more after a couple of seasons.

European Leagues Assist NBA's World Domination - 5 days ago
The NBA is experiencing a gilded age. Clubs have never been more valuable, television contracts have never been more lucrative, and investors are chomping at the bit to invest in the league. One of the reasons The Association has been turned into a license to print money is basketball is played all over the world, especially in Europe. Next to football, there's not a more popular team sport on the globe. It's interesting that on the world stage, basketball is second to football. Yet, in...   [read more]
