Talented Julie McCarthy (187-C-93) put on an amazing game in the last round for league's second-best Ullern and that's her to receive a Eurobasket.com Player of the Week award for round 17. The 19-year old center had a double-double of 15 points and eleven rebounds, while her team beat Gimle (#1, 14-3) 84-78. The game was between two of the league's top four teams. Ullern maintains the 2nd position in Norwegian Kvinneligaen. They are still close to the very top. Ullern would have been even better if they kept winning the games like in the last round. They have a solid 13-2 record. It's McCarthy's second year at Ullern and it's hard to imagine this team without her. McCarthy has impressive league stats. She is in league's top in rebounds (4th best: 11.0rpg).
The second most remarkable performance in last round's games was 23-year old Argentinian guard Sthefany Thomas (173-G-89) of league's best team Gimle. Thomas impressed basketball fans with 34 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists. Bad luck as Gimle lost that game 78-84 to slightly lower-ranked Ullern (#2, 13-2). It was definitely game of the week between two contenders to the title. Gimle still maintains its place as the top team in the standings, even despite this loss. It was just her team's 3rd loss this season, while they won 14 other games. Thomas is a newcomer at Gimle and it seems she did not have too much trouble to become one of team's leaders. She belongs to the best scorers in the league with 24.0ppg (#1). She also registered 10.0 boards per game.
The third best performed player last round was another Gimle's star - Nigerian Justina Udenze (189-C-89). Udenze showcased her all-around game by recording 19 points, fourteen rebounds (!!!) and five assists in the last round. Despite Udenze's great performance Gimle lost 78-84 to #2 ranked Ullern. But her team cannot count on just these two top stars as they also need help of the other teammates especially in such crucial game. Gimle had another "accident". It may be a crucial game and cause dropping from the group of top ranked teams. The record is still good, but 3rd lost game is hopefully really an accident. Udenze's teammates are also very good. That's why having such high stats is even more impressive. The season just started for Udenze as she played only first game. But it already looks like she can be another team's leader.
Other top performing players last week: 4. Julie McCarthy (187-C-93) of Ullern - 12 points and 11 rebounds 5. Kristine Kristiansen (173-G-75) of Ullern - 12 points, 5 rebounds and 6 assists 6. Rebekka Tyssoy (G-87) of Ulriken - 13 points, 3 rebounds and 7 assists 7. Kristine Kristiansen (173-G-75) of Ullern - 18 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists 8. Tina Moen (181-G-86) of Ullern - 23 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists 9. Karoline Fadnes (173-G-92) of Ullern - 16 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists 10. Therese Hager (183-F-86) of Ullern - 5 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists
The Player of the week is choosen based on efficiency calculation, but also including game result, importance of the game, if played recorded double-double/triple-double, etc. The efficiency formula is a combination of various formulas used by different basketball organizations/leagues.
