Croatia punched their Olympic Games tickets. They outscored Italy in overtime drama in Turin to win the Qualifying Tournament. Bojan Bogdanovic (203-SF-89, agency: XL Basketball Agency) stepped up with 26 points and 6 rebounds to lead the winners.
Croatia jumped ahead in the first period. They went on a 19:12 run in the opening ten minutes. Italy picked up the tempo in the second stanza. The Azzurri totalled 22 points in the period to cut the distance at 5-point mark 34:39. Italy pulled closer in the third term. The hosts got as close as 2 points at the third break. The teams went neck and neck throughout the fourth quarter. Marco Belinelli (196-G-86) gave Italy a 68:67 lead with under two minutes remaining. Bojan Bogdanovic responded with a jumper to put Croatia back in charge. Krunoslav Simon (197-G/F-85) followed with a free throw to boost the lead. But Melli tipped the ball in with 5 seconds left to force overtime. Dario Saric (207-PF-94, agency: BeoBasket) and Krunoslav Simon tipped off the extra period with five straight points to put Croatia in front. The teams exchanged blows but Bojan Bogdanovic sank four free throws late in overtime and carried Croatia to the victory. Krunoslav Simon produced 21 points, while Dario Saric netted 18 points in the win. Marco Belinelli responded with 18 points for Italy. Danilo Gallinari (208-SF-88) chipped in 12 points for the losing side.
