Lithuania posted the first victory at the Olympic Games tournament. They upset hosting Brazil in Group B. Mantas Kalnietis (195-PG-86, agency: Players Group) scored 16 points to lead the Baltic side.
Lithuania got to a energetic start. They dominated on both defensive and offensive sides in the first half. Lithuania posted a 27:17 lead after the opening quarter. The Baltic side went on a furious 31:12 run in the second frame to open a massive 58:29 halftime lead. But Brazil put up a determined comeback rally in the second half. The hosts pulled within 18-point mark at the final intermission. Brazil narrowed the deficit at 4 points late in regulation. But Sabonis converted a three-point play and Lithuania held on to a slim advantage to seal a tough victory at the end. Paulius Jankunas (205-PF-84) provided 15 points, while Renaldas Seibutis (196-SG-85) added 11 points for the winners. Leandro Barbosa (190-PG-82) responded with 21 points for Brazil. Raul Neto (185-PG-92) had 14 points in the defeat.
