Interview with Marcin Gortat - Oct 23, 2012

Eurobasket had the pleasure of a brief chat with Polish National Team Star & NBA rebound leader Mercin Gortat. He shared some quick thoughts on the state of affairs in Polish basketball and also on his upcoming NBA season.

EB: Mercin, thanks for sitting with us for a few minutes. How are things coming along with Team Poland in this summer's Eurobasket Qualification?
MG: The qualifiers were very good for us. First of all. our main goal was to qualify to the European championship, and the best thing was that we came out in the first place. after the first few games, where we lost against Belgium and lost against Finland at home, obviously our situation was pretty bad. The last few games, we played really well and played as a team ...that was the key in our clinching the first spot. This was very good for us and I am very happy and excited that I was able to help, we got the first spot in our group and we are going to Eurobasket.

EB: What is your idea on a return of some of the former National Team players? I have seen a few of the games this past qualifying stage, and it looks like an addition to the team could relieve some pressure off of you. Names like Lampe come to my mind immediately.
MG: Obviously, our team wasn't 100% Polish National Team. We were missing 3-4 core guys of our team, that could actually help us. We definitely miss Maciej Lampe , who is our 2nd big, and actually Maciej and I are building a very nice duo up under the basket. I am quite sure that next year, he is going to be with us, he is going to be healthy and he'll be ready to play at the highest level. I cant imagine that we will go and play Eurobasket without him, that would be unacceptable and we would be a weaker team so if he is going to show up and a few other guys show up, I am quite sure that i will under a bit less pressure and I will try and perform at the highest level.

EB: What is your outlook on the upcoming season in Phoenix? How do you feel the new additions to the roster and coaching staff will help?
MG: First of all, the season is going to be totally different. There are a few reasons that I think this way. we have alot of new guys, we have a new coaching staff and we are going to have totally different style. So, of course its going to take a few good months to learn each other, to learn from each other... to take a few months to get to know each other and each one of us has got to find out what kind of role we are going to have in the team. so I am excited i am excited to play another 80 game season, its going to be A NEW SEASON, A NEW PHOENIX SUNS, you will see A DIFFERENT MERCIN GORTAT! So hopefully the additions to the coaching staff will help us get better, to play better, each and every one of us is going to get better in the next 6 -7 months and it will help us perform well in the playoffs.

EB: What type of plans have you for the future? Not just the NBA and playing side of things, but Polish basketball development, the brand that is MG13?
MG: Well right now, there are alot of things going on around me and around my name, my foundation and my company. I am trying to stay focused on basketball and allow the good group of Guys that I have taking care of my business in Poland and a group of good guys taking care of my foundation. I am quite sure that we are on a good way to settle down with alot of good plans and good ideas. Its only a question of time how long will it take us to build a structure that can run itself. I am talking of a structure that will run without me or my name and not taking my time. right now the foundation is running because i am working alot during the summers and I hope that this is going to change in the next months and years. my brand, the brand MG13 should be bigger and bigger every year, it all depends on how well I am going to play in the NBA obviously that's the biggest reason and the biggest point behind building a brand...so maybe in 5 years I am going to tell you how big we are! Thanks and it's always good to see you!

EUROBASKET WISHES TO THANK MERCIN FOR SITTING WITH US & GRANTING US THIS CHANCE TO GET HIS THOUGHTS ON WHAT WAS AN EVENTFUL 2012 EUROBASKET QUALIFICATION ROUND, AND ALSO HIS THOUGHTS ON THE SEASON UPCOMING! WE LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING AND HEARING GREAT THINGS THIS SEASON AND IN THE FUTURE...BEST SWISHES BROTHER!

Start Lublin tabs Michael Gospodarek - 7 hours ago
TBV Start Lublin (PLK) inked 26-year old point guard Michael Gospodarek (186-91, agency: BeoExcell). He moved there from PGE Turow (PLK) where he played this season. Gospodarek has played there for the last three years. In 28 PLK games he averaged just 3.0ppg and 1.4apg. Gospodarek helped them to make it to the Polish Cup Semifinals. The last season he played also at PGE Turow (TBL). But in 23 games he had only 1.8ppg. Gospodarek also played 3 games in FIBA Europe Cup where he recorded 3....   [read more]

PLK Round 4 of Semi-Finals. Stal Ostrow force decider against Stelmet ZG - 8 hours ago
Stal Ostrow - Stelmet ZG 58-57 Stal Ostrow nipped visiting Stelmet ZG to even the semifinal series at 2-2. The decisive fifth game is scheduled for May 29th. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning first half. But Stelmet won fourth quarter 19-11. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening.
