Szumelda-Krzycki
The most shocking disappointment of round 9 in the 1Liga was a home defeat of second-best MKS DG (6-3) to third ranked Stal Ostrow (7-2) 83-72. It was a key game for the second position in the league. The game was mostly controlled by Stal Ostrow. MKS DG managed to win second period 23-16. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. The game was decided in the last minutes when Stal Ostrow won last quarter 24-14. 25 personal fouls committed by MKS DG helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. Point guard Marek Szumelda-Krzycki (193-PG-91, agency: Promotex) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 17 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists for the winners and the former international forward Wojciech Szawarski (195-76) chipped in 26 points and 4 steals. The best for the losing side was swingman Marek Piechowicz (203-88) with 19 points and 4 assists. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Stal Ostrow have a solid series of four victories in a row. They moved-up to second place, which they share with AZS Kutno. MKS DG at the other side dropped to the fourth position with three games lost. They share it with MOSiR Krosno. Stal Ostrow is looking forward to face Znicz Basket (#13) in Pruszkow in the next round which should be an easy win for them. MKS DG will play on the road against WIKANA Start (#14) in Lublin and is hoping to win this game.
1Liga top team - Slask Wroclaw (8-1) had no problems winning another game. This time they beat tenth ranked Znicz Basket (3-6) in Pruszkow 75-58. An interesting game took place in Torun where higher ranked P.Cukier SIDEn (5-4) was upset on its own court by fourteenth ranked AZS Radex (4-5) 79-72 on Saturday. 13th ranked UMKS Kielce (3-6) was outscored at home by fifteenth ranked Astoria Bydg. (3-6) with the biggest margin this round 92-66.
