Michal Ignerski's double-double lands him Player of the Week award among Poles playing currently abroad - Dec 15, 2012

Here is the weekly review of the top performing Polish players, who play currently abroad.

   #1. This week's number one is an international forward Michal Ignerski (207-80, college: Mississippi St., currently plays in Italy). He led Banco di Sardegna Sassari to an easy victory against the tenth-ranked Trenkwalder RE (5-6) crushing them 105-84 in the Italian SerieA in Sunday night's game. Ignerski had a double-double by scoring 18 points and getting 10 rebounds (was perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line) in 26 minutes on the court. Banco di Sardegna Sassari (9-2) is placed second in the SerieA. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. Ignerski has relatively good stats this year: 13.9ppg, 6.5rpg, 2FGP: 47.3%, 3FGP: 32.7% and FT: 80.6% in the 11 games he played so far. He is currently a member of the Polish senior national team.

   #2. Second place goes to an international center Marcin Gortat (211-84, currently plays in NBA). Gortat led Phoenix Suns to an easy victory against the Utah Jazz (13-11) 99-84 in the NBA last Friday. He recorded a double-double by scoring 12 points and getting 14 rebounds. Gortat also added 3 assists and 2 blocks. The Phoenix Suns have 9-15 record this season. But this is still an early stage of the season and everything may happen. This year Gortat has relatively solid stats: 11.0ppg, 8.1rpg, 1.3apg, 1.9bpg, 2FGP: 52.8% and FT: 69.5%. He is in the roster of the Polish senior national team.

   #3. The Polish player who performed third best last week abroad was former international guard David Logan (185-82, college: Indianapolis, currently plays in Euroleague). Logan was the major contributor in a Maccabi T-A's victory against the closely-ranked ALBA Berlin 78-62 in the Euroleague on Thursday night. He recorded 15 points in 26 minutes. Maccabi Electra Tel-Avivis placed third in group F. It's Logan's first season with the team. Logan has reliable stats this year: 11.1ppg, 2.2rpg, 1.2apg, 1.2spg, 2FGP: 54.3%, 3FGP: 47.7%(21-44) and FT: 62.5% in the 10 games. He is a naturalized American. Logan played for the Polish national team three years ago. He used to play for WTK Anwil Wloclawek in Polish league.

Power forward Maciej Lampe (211-85, currently plays in Euroleague) led his Spanish team Caja Laboral to an easy victory against the closely-ranked Anadolu Efes 91-76 in the Euroleague in Friday night's game. Lampe scored 17 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. Caja Laboral Vitoriais placed fourth in group F. Lampe's stats this season are: 11.3ppg and 5.1rpg. He has a dual citizenship: Polish and Swedish. Lampe is also Polish national team player.

International swingman Thomas Kelati (195-82, agency: Beo Basket, college: Washington St., currently plays in Eurocup) led his Spanish team Valencia Basket to an easy victory against the closely-ranked Azovmash crushing them 93-68 in the Eurocup on Wednesday night. Kelati scored 13 points. Valencia Basketis placed fourth in group J. Kelati averaged so far 13.0ppg and 2.7rpg. He is another player who holds two passports: Eritrean and Polish. Kelati plays currently for the Polish national team.

   #6. Forward Olek Czyz (200-90, agency: Priority Sports, college: Nevada, currently plays in Italy) led Lottomatica Roma to an easy victory against one of league's weakest teams Air Avellino (3-8) 94-79 in the Italian SerieA in Sunday night's game. He scored 16 points and grabbed 7 rebounds in 27 minutes; quite an impressive performance considering it's only Czyz's first season in pro basketball. Acea Virtus Roma (7-4) is placed fifth in the SerieA. This year Czyz's overall stats are: 8.3ppg and 4.5rpg in the 11 games. He is a former U20 international player as he played for the Polish team two years ago.

International power forward Jakub Wojciechowski (210-90, currently plays in Italy) led Torino to a victory over the closely-ranked Firenze (8-2) 79-72 in the Italian Nazionale A (third division) on Sunday night. Wojciechowski was MVP of the game. He had a double-double by scoring 16 points and getting 10 rebounds. Wojciechowski also added 2 blocks in 31 minutes. It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. PMS Torino (11-2) is placed first in the Nazionale A. It was his team's ninth consecutive victory in a row. Wojciechowski has individually a very good year with high stats. He averages: 16.4ppg, 9.0rpg and 1.1spg in the 13 games. Wojciechowski is also Polish national team player.

   #8. An experienced center Michal Hlebowicki (204-76, currently plays in Latvia), who plays in the Latvian LBL could not help Jekabpils (7-7) in their last game on Sunday. Despite his good performance Jekabpils was defeated 93-86 on the road by the lower-ranked Jelgava (#8). Hlebowicki recorded a double-double by scoring 13 points and getting 10 rebounds. There are only three games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. Hlebowicki's total stats this season are: 8.5ppg, 6.1rpg and 1.1apg. He used to play for the Polish national team back in 2002.

Former U20 international forward Karol Gruszecki (196-89, currently plays college basketball in the States) contributed to an Texas Arlington's surprising victory against the Houston Baptist University crushing them 81-47 in the NCAA last Thursday. Gruszecki scored 18 points, grabbed 6 boards, passed 5 assists and added 3 steals (was perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line) in 28 minutes. The University of Texas at Arlington has conference record this season. This year Gruszecki's total stats are: 8.5ppg, 6.1rpg and 1.1apg in the 14 games. He used to play for the Polish U20 national team four years ago.

   #10. Center Szymon Szewczyk (209-82, currently plays in Italy) contributed to an Umana Venezia's victory against the sixth-ranked SAIE3 BO (6-5) 65-51 in the Italian SerieA in Sunday night's game. Szewczyk scored 8 points in 33 minutes. Umana Reyer Venezia (4-7) is placed 11th in the SerieA. They ended the series of three consecutive loses. Szewczyk has averaged so far 8.3ppg and 4.9rpg in the nine games. He is an international player who is currently on the senior Polish National Team roster.

   #11. Former U18 international center Pawel Mroz (215-84, currently plays in Czech Republic) was not able to help one of league's weakest teams Basketbal Svitavy in their game against B&W Opava in the Czech Republic NBL. Despite his very good performance last Saturday Mroz scored 14 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. Mroz averaged so far 10.6ppg, 6.4rpg and 1.2apg. He used to play for the Polish U18 national team ten years ago.

   #12. Former international center Cezary Trybanski (218-79, currently plays in Lithuania) contributed to Dzukija's victory against the 16th-ranked Nafta Universitetas 80-68 in the Lithuanian NKL (second division) on Saturday night. Trybanski scored 14 points, had 9 rebounds and made 2 blocks in 31 minutes. Trybanski is currently first on the list of best rebounders and also on the list of best blockers (first place). He has very reliable stats this year: 11.8ppg, 10.7rpg and 3.5bpg in the 18 games. Trybanski used to play for the Polish national team back in 2001.

   #13. Former U18 international center Szymon Lukasiak (208-87, college: Jacksonville, currently plays in Sweden) was not able to secure a victory for Nassjo in their game against 08 Stockholm in the Swedish Basketligan. Despite his very good performance in Friday night's game He was the second best scorer with 16 points. Lukasiak also added 4 rebounds. He has averaged so far 8.8ppg and 5.6rpg. Lukasiak used to play for the Polish U18 national team seven years ago.

   #14. International center Przemyslaw Karnowski (216-93, currently studies in the States) couldn't help the Gonzaga in their game against the University of Illinois in the NCAA. Karnowski scored 9 points in only 9 minutes. His team lost 74-85. Karnowski has averaged so far 5.6ppg, 3.2rpg and 2.3apg in the 11 games. He plays currently for the Polish national team.


The list of other players, who all have Polish passport but never been selected to any of Polish national teams:

   #1. Gal Mekel (190-PG-88, college: Wichita St., currently plays in Israel), who plays in the Israeli Winner League could not help Maccabi Haifa (6-3) in their last game. Despite his very good performance Maccabi Haifa lost 92-103 on the road to the lower-ranked (#6) Hapoel J-M. Mekel had a double-double by scoring 24 points and making 12 passes in 37 minutes. It was Maccabi Haifa's first loss after four consecutive victories. Mekel's stats this year are: 15.0ppg, 2.3rpg, 7.7apg and 1.7spg in the three games he played so far. He has a dual citizenship: Polish and Israeli.

   #2. Vitaliy Kovalenko (203-F-84, currently plays in EuroChallenge) managed to help Khimik-OPZ Yuzny to win against the fourth-ranked Gaz Metan crushing them 89-66 in the EuroChallenge last Tuesday. Kovalenko scored only 4 points and grabbed 9 rebounds. Khimik-OPZ Yuznyis placed second in group K. This season Kovalenko averages: 5.5ppg and 4.0rpg. He is another player who holds two passports: Polish and Ukrainian.

   #3. Experienced Jose Mackiewicz (201-F-79, currently plays in Uruguay), who plays in the Uruguayan LUB was not able to help Tabare (9-18) in their last game on Tuesday. Despite Mackiewicz's very good performance the 14th-placed Tabare was defeated 89-78 on the opponent's court by the much higher-ranked Aguada (#6) in the Capital group. He was the top scorer with 16 points. Mackiewicz also added 5 rebounds. The Regular Season already ended. Mackiewicz has averaged so far 3.2ppg and 1.4rpg. He has both Polish and Uruguayan nationalities.

   #4. Maciej Baginski (195-SF-95, currently plays in Iceland) was the major contributor in an overtime Njardvik's victory against the closely-ranked Keflavik (5-5) 92-91 in the Icelandic Dominos League last Thursday. He recorded 19 points and grabbed 9 rebounds in 33 minutes. UMFN Njardvik (3-10) is placed seventh in the Dominos League. Baginski has been at the team for four years. Baginski has averaged so far 7.0ppg and 3.6rpg in the 10 games. He also holds two passports: Polish and Icelandic. Despite Baginski's Polish nationality, he currently plays for the Icelandic U18 national team and is not eligible to play for the Polish team.

   #5. Dominik Malinowski (198-SG-91, currently plays in Germany) contributed to an easy victory against the fifth-ranked BSW Sixers (5-6) 89-72 in the German ProB (third division) on Saturday night. Olesinski scored only 2 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. Olesinski has averaged so far 5.6ppg, 3.2rpg and 2.3apg. He is a naturalized American. Strangely Olesinski has never played in Poland.

   #7. Jakub Kusmieruk (224-C-89, currently studies in the States) was not able to secure a victory for the Idaho St. in their game against the California State University, Fullerton in the NCAA. He cannot count Thursday's game as one of the best ones. Kusmieruk scored only 3 points and grabbed 4 rebounds in 8 minutes on the court. His team lost 53-66. Kusmieruk has averaged so far 5.6ppg, 3.2rpg and 2.3apg in the 11 games.

   #8. Patryk Bajtus (206-C-91, currently plays in Portugal) couldn't help Barcelos in their game against Academica in the Portuguese LPB. He scored only 4 points. His team was edged 88-85. Bajtus has averaged so far 4.0ppg and 2.0rpg.

   #9. Anatoliy Shundel (190-PG-93, currently plays in Ukraine) contributed to Mykolaiv's victory against the league outsider BC Kyiv 76-63 in the Ukrainian Superleague last Friday. He recorded only 1 points. This year Shundel averages just 0.5ppg in the 10 games.

   #10. Daniel Motyka (180-G-92, currently plays in Sweden) contributed to an IK Eos' victory against the 11th-ranked Helsingborg 81-72 in the Swedish Basketettan (second division) on Saturday night. He scored only 2 points. Motyka has averaged so far 6.5ppg and 1.7rpg.

Siarka Tarnobrzeg (1Liga) agreed terms with 24-year old ex-international center Piotr Niedzwiedzki (210-93). He played last season at Gornik Walbrzych in the 2Liga. Poland - Russia 81-78 Poland topped Russia in Hamburg to finish second at the SuperCup 2017. They grabbed an 81-78 win for a 21 record, while Russia lost all three games to finish last.
