Maciej Lampe's double-double lands him Player of the Week award among Poles playing currently abroad - Jan 26, 2013

We bring you last week's top performances from Poles who are playing abroad and who all have had prior experience of national team duties at youth or senior level.


Maciej Lampe

   #1. This week's number one is an international power forward Maciej Lampe (211-85, currently plays in Euroleague), who plays in Spain. He could not help Caja Laboral (4-1) in their last game. Despite Lampe's very good performance the third-placed Caja Laboral lost 79-90 at home to the second-ranked Regal FC Barcelona in the group F of Euroleague. He had a double-double by scoring 21 points and getting 11 rebounds. Lampe also added 3 assists in 30 minutes on the court. It was Caja Laboral's first loss after four consecutive victories. Lampe has relatively good stats this year: 12.6ppg, 6.1rpg, 2FGP: 47.6%, 3FGP: 32.3% and FT: 75.9% in the 15 games he played so far. He has a dual citizenship: Polish and Swedish. Lampe is currently a member of the Polish senior national team.

   #2. Second place goes to an international swingman Thomas Kelati (195-82, agency: Beo Basket, college: Washington St., currently plays in Eurocup), who plays in Spain. He was not able to help Valencia Basket (2-1) in their last game on Wednesday. Despite Kelati's very good performance Valencia Basket was defeated 91-76 on the road by the lower-ranked Gescrap BB (#4) in the group J of Eurocup. He was the top scorer with 20 points. There are only three games left until the end of the Eurocup Top 16. So now every game will be critical. This season Kelati has relatively solid stats: 14.0ppg, 2.5rpg, 1.3apg, 3FGP: 55.3%(21-38). He is another player who holds two passports: Eritrean and Polish. Ex-BOT Turow Zgorzelec player is in the roster of the Polish senior national team.

   #3. The Polish player who performed third best last week abroad was an international center Marcin Gortat (211-84, currently plays in NBA). Gortat was the major contributor in a Phoenix Suns' victory against the Los Angeles Clippers (32-12) 93-88 in the NBA on Thursday night. He recorded 15 points and grabbed 8 rebounds in 36 minutes. The Phoenix Suns have not so impressive 15-28 record this season. Gortat has individually a very good year with high stats. He averages: 11.7ppg, 8.8rpg, 1.3apg, 1.9bpg, 2FGP: 53.2% and FT: 67.6% in the 43 games. Gortat is also a member of the Polish senior national team.

   #4. An experienced forward Michal Ignerski (207-80, agency: Stanley International, college: Mississippi St., currently plays in Italy) led Banco di Sardegna Sassari to an easy victory against one of league's weakest teams Angelico Biella (3-13) crushing them 100-72 in the Italian SerieA in Sunday night's game. He recorded 19 points. Banco di Sardegna Sassari (13-3) is placed second in the SerieA. It's Ignerski's first season with the team. Ignerski has reliable stats this year: 12.6ppg and 5.4rpg. He is also Polish national team player.

   #5. Former international guard David Logan (185-82, college: Indianapolis, currently plays in Euroleague), who plays in Israel was not able to secure a victory for Maccabi T-A (1-4) in their last game. Despite Logan's very good performance Maccabi T-A (#6) was edged 78-77 on their home court in Tel-Aviv by the higher-ranked (#5) Olympiacos in the group F of Euroleague. He was the second best scorer with 15 points in 29 minutes. This year Logan's overall stats are: 9.7ppg and 2.3rpg in the 15 games. He is a naturalized American. Logan used to play for the Polish national team four years ago. He played also for WTK Anwil Wloclawek in Polish league.

   #6. Center Szymon Szewczyk (209-82, currently plays in Italy) led Umana Venezia to a victory against the closely-ranked Cantu (11-5) 83-79 in the Italian SerieA on Sunday night. Szewczyk recorded 21 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. Umana Reyer Venezia (8-8) is placed seventh in the SerieA. Szewczyk's stats this season are: 11.0ppg and 5.5rpg. He is an international player who is currently on the senior Polish National Team roster.

Former international center Michal Hlebowicki (204-76, currently plays in Latvia) contributed to an easy victory against the closely-ranked Jelgava (9-10) 91-76 in the Latvian LBL in Sunday night's game. Hlebowicki had a double-double by scoring 16 points and getting 14 rebounds. He also added 4 assists in 21 minutes. BK Jekabpils (12-8) is placed third in the LBL. Hlebowicki's team will play only one more game in the Regular Season. And now that game is very crucial. This year Hlebowicki's total stats are: 8.0ppg and 6.1rpg in the 20 games. He used to play for the Polish national team eleven years ago.

   #8. Center Cezary Trybanski (218-79, currently plays in Lithuania), who plays in the Lithuanian NKL (second division) couldn't help Dzukija (19-8) in their last game on Friday. Despite his very good performance Dzukija was edged 80-77 in Pakruojis by the much lower-ranked Meresta (#10). Trybanski recorded a double-double by scoring 18 points and getting 16 rebounds. He also added 2 blocks. Trybanski is the league's best rebounder and also on the list of best blockers (first place). He has very reliable stats this season: 12.7ppg, 11.0rpg and 3.4bpg. Trybanski used to play for the Polish national team back in 2001.

   #9. Former U20 international forward Olek Czyz (200-90, agency: Priority Sports, college: Nevada, currently plays in Italy) managed to help Acea Virtus Roma in a 1-point victoryagainst the league outsider VL Pesaro (3-13) 65-64 in the Italian SerieA last Sunday. He recorded only 4 points in 16 minutes. Acea Virtus Roma (11-5) is placed fifth in the SerieA. It was his team's fourth consecutive victory in a row. Czyz has averaged so far 6.6ppg and 4.3rpg in the 16 games. He used to play for the Polish U20 national team three years ago.

Forward Karol Gruszecki (196-89, currently plays college basketball in the States) contributed to an Texas Arlington's victory against the Utah State University (4-3) 74-68 in the NCAA on Thursday night. Gruszecki scored 14 points. The University of Texas at Arlington has 4-4 conference record this season. Gruszecki has averaged so far 6.6ppg and 4.3rpg. He is a former U20 international player as five years ago he still played for the Polish national team.

   #11. Former U18 international center Pawel Mroz (215-84, currently plays in Czech Republic) contributed to a Basketbal Svitavy's victory against the closely-ranked Levharti Chomutov 94-89 in the Czech Republic NBL in Saturday night's game. Mroz scored 15 points and grabbed 6 rebounds in 21 minutes. Mroz is ranked seventh on the list of the best rebounders in the league with 6.9rpg. He also averaged so far 14.4ppg and 1.1apg in the 20 games. Mroz used to play for the Polish U18 national team eleven years ago.

   #12. International power forward Jakub Wojciechowski (210-90, currently plays in Italy) helped Torino edge the 17th-ranked Perugia 57-56 in the Italian Nazionale A (third division) on Sunday night. Wojciechowski scored 8 points and grabbed 7 rebounds in 31 minutes. Wojciechowski has very impressive stats this year: 15.7ppg and 8.9rpg in the 18 games. He is also in the roster of the Polish national team.

   #13. Former U18 international center Szymon Lukasiak (208-87, college: Jacksonville, currently plays in Sweden), who plays in the Swedish Basketligan couldn't help Nassjo (4-20) in their last game. Despite Lukasiak's very good performance the bottom-ranked Nassjo lost 76-91 on their home court in Nassjo to the second-ranked Uppsala Basket. He was the top scorer with 19 points in 27 minutes. Lukasiak has averaged so far 9.5ppg and 5.0rpg in the 23 games. He used to play for the Polish U18 national team eight years ago.

   #14. Former U20 international power forward Jakub Parzenski (212-91, currently plays in Italy) couldn't help SAIE3 BO in their game against Vanoli Cremona in the Italian SerieA. Parzenski recorded only 4 points. His team was edged 93-92. This season Parzenski averages just 1.5ppg. He used to play for the Polish U20 national team back in 2011.

   #15. U20 international forward Tomasz Gielo (206-93, currently studies in the States) couldn't help the Liberty in their game against the Presbyterian College in the NCAA. He recorded 5 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. His team was defeated 68-60. This season Gielo averages only 1.5ppg. He is also in the roster of the Polish U20 national team.


The list of other players, who all have Polish passport but never been selected to any of Polish national teams:

   #1. Vitaliy Kovalenko (203-F-84, currently plays in EuroChallenge), who plays in Ukraine could not help Khimik (0-2) in their last game on Tuesday. Despite Kovalenko's good performance Khimik (#4) was defeated 77-69 at home by the leading Krasnie Krilya in the group K of EuroChallenge. He was the second best scorer with 13 points. Kovalenko also added 4 rebounds and made 2 blocks. There are only four games left until the end of the EuroChallenge Top 16. So now every game will be critical. Kovalenko has averaged so far 6.0ppg and 3.6rpg. He has a dual citizenship: Polish and Ukrainian.

   #2. Gal Mekel (190-PG-88, college: Wichita St., currently plays in Israel) led Maccabi Haifa to a victory against the closely-ranked Hapoel Eilat (9-5) 96-87 in the Israeli Winner League on Sunday night. Mekel scored 15 points in 32 minutes. It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. Maccabi Bazan Haifa (9-5) is placed third in the Winner League. Mekel is the league's best passer with 6.4apg. This year his other stats are: 14.4ppg, 2.6rpg and 1.4spg in the eight games he played so far. Mekel is another player who holds two passports: Polish and Israeli.

   #3. Konrad Wysocki (201-F-82, agency: Pro One Sports, college: Princeton, currently plays in EuroChallenge) managed to help EWE Baskets Oldenburg to win against the closely-ranked Telekom Baskets (1-1) 82-65 in the EuroChallenge last Wednesday. He scored only 3 points. It was the game of the round between two top 2 ranked teams in group L. EWE Baskets Oldenburg (2-0) is placed first. There are only four games left until the end of the EuroChallenge Top 16. So now every game is very crucial. Wysocki has averaged so far 7.2ppg and 4.5rpg. He has both Polish and German nationalities.

   #4. Robert Lewandowski (208-F-89, college: Texas Tech, currently plays in Czech Republic), who plays in the Czech Republic NBL was not able to help BK Usti nad Labem (4-18) in their last game on Saturday. Despite Lewandowski's very good performance the bottom-ranked BK Usti nad Labem was defeated 79-71 on the road by the much higher-ranked BK Decin (#5). He was the second best scorer with 15 points. Lewandowski also added 5 rebounds (was perfect 5-for-5 from the free throw line). There are only two games left until the end of the Regular Season. Lewandowski has individually a very good season with high stats. He averages: 15.1ppg, 4.7rpg and 1.6apg. Lewandowski is a naturalized American. He used to play for PGE Turow Zgorzelec in Polish league.

   #5. Marek Olesinski (203-F, currently plays college basketball in the States) contributed to an Air Force's victory against the Boise State University (2-2) 91-80 in the NCAA in Saturday night's game. Olesinski recorded 6 points in only 10 minutes. The U.S. Air Force Academy has 2-2 conference record this season. This year Olesinski averages only 1.5ppg in the 10 games. He is a naturalized American. Strangely Olesinski has never played in Poland.

   #6. Dominik Malinowski (198-SG-91, currently plays in Germany) contributed to a 3-point SG Schwelmer Baskets' victory against the 11th-ranked BSV Wulfen 68-65 in the German ProB (third division) on Friday night. Malinowski scored 5 points in 14 minutes. Malinowski has averaged so far 6.5ppg, 3.4rpg and 2.2apg in the 14 games. He also holds two passports: Polish and German.

   #7. Patryk Bajtus (206-C-91, currently plays in Portugal) was not able to secure a victory for Barcelos in their game against Fisica in the Portuguese LPB. Bajtus cannot count Saturday's game as one of the best ones. He recorded only 2 points and grabbed 4 rebounds in 13 minutes. His team was edged 69-66. Bajtus has averaged so far 2.7ppg and 3.7rpg in the six games.

27-year old power forward Nikola Markovic (208-F/C-89) had a great game in the last round for Trefl Sopot and receives a Eurobasket.com Player of the Week award for round 9. He had a double-double of 24 points and 16 rebounds, while his team beat Krosno (#9, 5-5) 75-64. Trefl Sopot is placed at 8th position in Polish league. Robert Skibniewski moves to King Szczecin - 2 days ago

Robert Skibniewski (182-83) has parted ways with Anwil (TBL) and signed new deal withKing Szczecin(TBL) until the end of 2017/2018 season.In 9 PLK games he recorded 5.9ppg, 1.2rpg and 3.4apg this season. The last season Skibniewski played also at Anwil where in 39 TBL games he averaged 6.7ppg, 1.9rpg and 3.3apg. He helped them to make it to the semifinals. TBL top team - Twarde Pierniki (9-0) managed to deliver another win on Sunday. This time they beat ninth ranked Energa Czarni (4-5) in Torun 85-74. Energa Czarni was trailing by 6 points at halftime but managed to get 2-point lead after three quarters before a 29-16 charge of Twarde Pierniki, which allowed them to win the game.
