Interview with Mike Taylor, Polish National Team and Maine Red Claws head coach - Feb 13, 2014

Mike Taylor
Eurobasket.com had the opportunity to talk with Mike Taylor . He was named the new head coach of Polish National Team recently. He has also worked with D-League team Maine Red Claws since 2012. He started his coaching career in 2001 with 2. Bundesliga team BV Chemnitz 99. Then he coached teams playing in various American leagues to sign finally with German team Ratiopharm Ulm. Taylor worked there for 8 years (since 2003 to 2011!). American coach also cooperated with Rio Grande Valley Vipers during 2011/2012 season and Czech Republic National team from 2010 to 2013. In both cases he was assistant coach.

How would you describe yourself as a coach?
That is a question for players who have played for me or people I have worked with but I believe they would say positive, patient, supportive, energetic, good communicator and motivator and always trying to enjoy the process.

What goals has Polish Basketball Association set for you?
We have set clear goals. And as the Federation has made clear 'Failure is not an option'. Our first goal is to qualify for Eurobasket 2015 in Ukraine. That will be our focus until the time we achieve it. Bigger goals for Ukraine and beyond are set but we will focus on things one at a time. For now, everything will be invested into this summer.

You will now have many duties as Maine Red Claws and Polish National Team coach. How do you want to share it? Have you already known, how many time will you spend in Poland?
Many national team coaches throughout the world coach two teams. This is not unusual. I will organize my time efficiently and work closely with the Polish Federation, the Maine Red Claws and the Boston Celtics. I love to coach basketball and each day I am excited to work on game plans, practice plans, video, workouts, meetings, whatever has to do with basketball I am happy doing.

You worked in Ulm for 8 years. Do you think that such a comfort and possibility of a long-term cooperation is important in basketball?
What is important in basketball is working with good people who share a similar vision and the same goals. It's important for a coach to 'fit'. I was in Ulm for 8 great years and we built the organization step by step. More recently, I have been working with the Czech Republic National Team for the last four years. In both cases, development and improvement came step by step and with continuity and a good fit. The personal relationships that are established within teams and within staffs are extremely important. For sure long-term cooperation is a positive because many times success results from continuity and stability. It takes time to build relationships and establish systems and style of play.

What is your knowledge about Polish National Team?
I have a good base of knowledge about the Polish National Team after preparing for and coaching against Poland last summer in Celje Slovenia. I am excited to get to know the players from last seasons roster and up and coming young talents as well. I am honored to be the first American coach in the history of the Polish Federation and I am hopeful to make a lasting positive impact on basketball in the country of Poland.

You have already worked in Germany and Czech Republic. Can you speak languages of that countries? I ask you about that because I've seen a short movie with you teaching Czech people how to speak English and Czech language is also very similar to Polish.
I have enjoyed my time coaching in Germany and with the Czech Republic National Team. During my 9 seasons coaching in Germany, I learned German and spent several seasons going to Berlitz classes. In Czech Republic, we had fun with the videos. My wife speaks Czech, German and English so I am around those languages a lot. It will be fun to learn some Polish and experience the culture. I love coaching overseas because of the basketball and life experiences.

I heard that you are not only basketball coach but you have also some experience at journalism as you worked for Eurobasket.com and betterbasketball.com. What can you tell about that episodes?
In the past I have written articles or covered basketball for a variety of on-line sites. I am just very interested in basketball and like to follow all the different leagues all over the world. Since coming back to the USA and D-League, I do not have as much free time so have not been as active as before.

Maddox's double-double lands him Player of the Week award - 2 days ago
27-year old power forward Kareem Maddox (202-F/C-89) had a great game in the last round for Krosno and receives a Eurobasket.com Player of the Week award for round 24. He had a double-double of 16 points and 15 rebounds, while his team edged out Trefl Sopot (#11, 13-12) 75-73. The game rather meaningless between the teams, which do not have any influence on top of the standings. Krosno maintains the 10th position in Polish league.
