Maciej Lampe's double-double lands him Player of the Week award among Poles playing currently abroad: - Mar 11, 2017

We bring you last week's top performances from Poles who are playing abroad and who all have had prior experience of national team duties at youth or senior level.

   #1. This week's number one is an international power forward Maciej Lampe (211-85, currently plays in China). He led Leopards to an overtime victory over the closely-ranked Sharks (30-8) 102-95 in the Chinese CBA in Sunday night's game. Lampe was MVP of the game. He had a double-double by scoring 28 points and getting 15 rebounds. Lampe also added 5 assists in 38 minutes on the court. Shenzhen Leopards (26-12) are placed sixth in the CBA. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. Lampe has individually a very good year with high stats. He averages: 23.7ppg, 12.9rpg, 2.1apg, 1.4spg, 2FGP: 59.2%(369-623), 3FGP: 36.2% and FT: 74.4% in 44 games he played so far. Lampe has a dual citizenship: Polish and Swedish. He is currently a member of the Polish senior national team.

   #2. Second place goes to an international swingman Mateusz Ponitka (196-93, currently plays in Basketball Champions League). Ponitka was the major contributor in a Pinar Karsiyaka's victory against the leader Besiktas (12-2) 90-83 in the Basketball Champions League last Wednesday. He scored 18 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. It was the game of the round between two top 2 ranked teams in group B. Pinar Karsiyaka SK Izmir (9-5) is placed second. It's Ponitka's first season with the team. Ponitka has relatively good stats this year: 10.3ppg, 4.5rpg, 1.8apg, 1.3spg, 2FGP: 49.5%, 3FGP: 35.6% and FT: 72.9%. He is in the roster of the Polish senior national team.

   #3. The Polish player who performed third best last week abroad was an experienced former international guard David Logan (185-82, college: Indianapolis, currently plays in Basketball Champions League). Logan could not help Scandone AV (10-4) in their last game. Despite his very good performance the second-placed Scandone AV (10-4) lost 68-72 at home to the lower-ranked (#3) Umana Venezia in the group D of Basketball Champions League. Logan was the top scorer with 15 points. He also added 3 passes in 26 minutes. This year Logan's overall stats are: 8.5ppg, 2.5rpg, 1.5apg, 3FGP: 16.7% and FT: 66.7% in two games. He is a naturalized American. Logan played for the Polish national team eight years ago. He used to play for WTK Anwil Wloclawek in Polish league.

   #4. Power forward Damian Kulig (205-87, agency: BeoBasket, currently plays in Turkey) contributed to Banvit's victory against one of league's weakest teams Balikesir (3-17) 79-73 in a derby game in the Turkish BSL in Saturday night's game. Kulig scored 9 points, grabbed 4 rebounds and made 3 blocks. Banvit Basketbol Kulubu (15-5) is placed fourth in the BSL. It was his team's fourth consecutive victory in a row. Kulig's total stats this season are: 8.7ppg and 4.8rpg. He used to play for the Polish national team back in 2015.

International swingman Adam Waczynski (199-89, currently plays in EuroCup) contributed to an Unicaja Malaga's victory against the league leader Bayern Muenchen (6-0) 74-69 in the Eurocup last Wednesday. Waczynski scored 9 points and grabbed 9 rebounds in 29 minutes. It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. Unicaja Malaga (3-3) is placed second in the Eurocup. This year Waczynski's total stats are: 8.7ppg and 2.4rpg in 17 games. He plays currently for the Polish national team.

   #6. Point guard A.J. Slaughter (191-87, also represented by BeoBasket, college: W.Kentucky, currently plays in France) contributed to a Strasbourg IG's victory against the league outsider Sluc Nancy (4-17) 80-71 in the French ProA on Saturday night. Slaughter scored 8 points and added 7 assists. Strasbourg IG (12-9) is placed sixth in the ProA. This season Slaughter has relatively solid stats: 13.4ppg, 2.5rpg and 3.2apg. He is a naturalized American. Slaughter is an international player who is currently on the senior Polish National Team roster. Strangely he has never played in Poland.

   #7. Former international center Marcin Gortat (214-84, currently plays in NBA) led Washington Wizards to a victory against the Denver Nuggets (30-35) 123-113 in the NBA in Wednesday night's game. Gortat had a double-double by scoring 11 points and getting 15 rebounds in 33 minutes. The Washington Wizards have a solid 40-24 record this season. It was his team's fourth consecutive victory in a row. Gortat is one of the most experienced players in a team as it's his fourth year in Wizards' roster. He has very impressive stats this season: 11.4ppg, 11.0rpg and 1.5apg in 64 games. Gortat used to play for the Polish national team two years ago.

   #8. Power forward Aaron Cel (203-87, currently plays in France) was not able to help Gravelines-Dunkerque in their game against Limoges CSP Elite (10-11) in the French ProA. He scored 7 points and added 3 assists. Gravelines-Dunkerque was defeated 88-77 on the road by the lower-ranked Limoges CSP Elite (#9). Cel has averaged so far 7.3ppg and 4.0rpg. Despite he played previously for the French U20 national team, Cel is currently in the Polish national team roster.

International forward Tomasz Gielo (205-93, college: Mississippi, currently plays in Spain) helped Joventut win their game against the third-ranked Movil Estudiantes (16-5) 77-71 in the Spanish Liga Endesa on Sunday night. He scored 10 points in 15 minutes. Divina Seguros Juventut Badalona (7-15) is placed 14th in the Liga Endesa. Gielo has averaged so far 4.0ppg and 1.7rpg in 22 games. He is also in the roster of the Polish national team.

Center Przemyslaw Karnowski (216-93, currently plays college basketball in the States) helped Gonzaga win their game against the Saint Mary's College of California (14-3) 74-56 in the NCAA on Tuesday night. Karnowski recorded a double-double by scoring 15 points and getting 10 rebounds. He also added 4 blocks. The Gonzaga University has a very solid 17-0 conference record this season. So far his team won all seventeen games in the conference. They will play only one more game in the NCAA Regular Season. And that game will be critical. Karnowski has been at the team for five years. Karnowski has reliable stats this season: 12.6ppg, 6.0rpg and 2.0apg. He is a former international player as two years ago he still played for the Polish senior national team.

   #11. Former international shooting guard Dardan Berisha (191-88, currently plays in Italy) was not able to secure a victory for Juvecaserta in their game against Dolomiti En. TR in the Italian Serie A. Berisha cannot count Sunday's game as one of the best ones. He scored only 3 points, made 5 passes and 3 steals. His team was defeated 76-66. Berisha has averaged so far 3.0ppg, 3.0rpg, 3.5apg and 2.0spg. He used to play for the Polish national team two years ago.

   #12. International center Adam Lapeta (217-87, agency: Alti Sport, currently plays in Lithuania) managed to help Lietuvos Rytas Vilnius in a 2-point victory against the closely-ranked Juventus 87-85 in the Lithuanian LKL last Sunday. He recorded only 2 points in 5 minutes on the court. Lapeta has averaged so far 4.4ppg and 3.3rpg in 24 games. He is also in the roster of the Polish national team.

   #13. Former international forward Konrad Tota (196-80, college: Dickinson St., currently plays in Germany) helped SG Schwelmer Baskets win their game against the ninth-ranked Bonn II 72-65 in the German Regionalliga (fourth division) in Saturday night's game. He had a double-double by scoring 11 points and getting 10 rebounds. Tota also added 4 assists in a mere 19 minutes. Tota has averaged so far 8.1ppg, 4.6rpg and 2.0apg in eight games. Despite he played previously for the Canadian university national team, Tota is currently in the Polish national team roster.

   #14. U18 international power forward Bartlomiej Pietras (206-98, currently plays in Spain) couldn't help Estudiantes B in their game against Villarrobledo in the Spanish EBA (fourth division). He cannot count Saturday's game as one of the best ones. Pietras recorded only 3 points and grabbed 5 rebounds in 14 minutes. His team was crushed by 24 points 65-41. Pietras has averaged so far 5.2ppg and 4.7rpg in 20 games. He plays currently for the Polish U18 national team.


The list of other players, who all have Polish passport but never been selected to any of Polish national teams:

   #1. Oded Brandwein (179-PG-88, currently plays in Israel). Brandwein could not help one of league's weakest teams Maccabi Rishon (10-11) to beat Maccabi Haifa (10-11). He scored 7 points. It was his first game for Maccabi Rishon this season. Maccabi Rishon was defeated 83-79 at home by the higher-ranked Maccabi Haifa (#7). Brandwein's team will play only one more game in the Regular Season. And that game will be critical. Brandwein has a dual citizenship: Polish and Israeli. Despite his Polish passport, Brandwein previously played for the Israeli U20 national team and is probably not eligible to play for the Polish team.

   #2. Experienced Konrad Wysocki (202-F-82, college: Princeton, currently plays in Germany) led Crailsheim Merlins to an easy victory against one of league's weakest teams ETB Wohnbau (6-20) crushing them 93-72 in the German ProA (second division) last Saturday. He scored 12 points, grabbed 5 rebounds and dished 3 assists in 21 minutes. Crailsheim Merlins (21-5) is placed second in the ProA. It was his team's fifth consecutive victory in a row. There are only four games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game is very crucial. Wysocki has reliable stats this year: 10.2ppg, 5.0rpg and 1.8apg in 26 games he played so far. He is another player who holds two passports: Polish and German.

   #3. Maciej Baginski (195-SF-95, currently plays in Iceland) led Thor Thorl to a victory against the ninth-ranked Njardvik (10-12) 83-70 in the Icelandic Dominos League in Thursday night's game. Baginski recorded 16 points and grabbed 8 rebounds in 33 minutes. Thor Thorl (12-10) is placed fifth in the Dominos League. There are only three games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game will be important. Baginski's stats this year are: 14.4ppg, 4.3rpg, 1.8apg and 1.5spg in 22 games. He has both Polish and Icelandic nationalities. Despite Baginski's Polish passport, he previously played for the Icelandic U18 national team and probably cannot be called to the Polish team.

   #4. Aleksander Lichodzijewski (204-PF-84, currently plays in Belgium) contributed to a 2-point Basic-Fit Brussels' victory against the eighth-ranked Belfius Mons-Hainaut (8-14) 83-81 in the Belgian Euromillions League on Sunday night. Lichodzijewski recorded 12 points and added 3 passes in 20 minutes. Basic-Fit Brussels (12-10) is placed fourth in the Euromillions League. Lichodzijewski plays fourth season for the team. He has averaged so far 7.9ppg, 3.5rpg and 1.9apg in 22 games. Lichodzijewski also holds two passports: Polish and Belgian.

   #5. Stefan Blaszczynski (196-G/F-84, college: Nicholls St., currently plays in Australia) was not able to help Manly Warringah Sea Eagles (1-1) in their last game on Sunday. Despite his very good performance Manly Warringah Sea Eagles (#3) were edged 72-70 on the road by the lower-ranked Newcastle Hunters (#4) in the WARATAH group. Blaszczynski was the top scorer with 22 points. He also added 8 rebounds. But this is still an early stage of the season and everything may happen. Andy Mazurczak (188-G, agency: Duran International, college: Wisc.-Parkside, currently plays in Greece) was not able to secure a victory for Kavala in their game against Amyntas Dafnis in the Greek A2 (second division). Mazurczak scored 5 points and grabbed 5 rebounds. His team was edged 61-59. Mazurczak averaged so far 12.2ppg, 3.7rpg, 4.2apg and 1.4spg. He is a naturalized American. Apparently Mazurczak has never played in Poland.

   #7. David Brembly (197-G/F-93, currently plays in Germany) couldn't help Eisbaeren Bremerhaven in their game against Bayern Muenchen in the German BBL. He scored only 4 points. His team was crushed by 35 points 108-73. This season Brembly averages just 1.8ppg. He holds both Polish and German passports.

   #8. Gal Gilinski (195-G-95, currently plays in Israel) couldn't help Hapoel Kfar Saba in their game against Ironi Nes-Ziona in the Israeli National League (second division). Gilinski recorded 5 points and grabbed 4 rebounds in 14 minutes. His team was badly defeated by 17 points 77-60. Gilinski has averaged so far 9.1ppg, 3.0rpg, 3.6apg and 1.1spg in 22 games. He has Israeli and Polish nationalities.

   #9. Maciej Klimaszewski (203-C-95, currently plays in Iceland) couldn't help Snaefell (20-5) in their last game on Friday. Despite Klimaszewski's good performance the league leader Snaefell was badly defeated 102-83 in Hafnarfjordur by the much lower-ranked Haukar (#10). He was the second best scorer with 10 points. Klimaszewski also added 7 rebounds. Klimaszewski has averaged so far 4.2ppg and 2.7rpg. He has dual citizenship: Polish and Icelandic. Despite Klimaszewski's Polish passport, he previously played for the Icelandic U18 national team.

   #10. Daniel Motyka (180-PG-92, college: Wisc.-Superior, currently plays in Sweden) contributed to a 3-point IK Eos' victory against the second-ranked Eskilstuna 112-109 in the Swedish Basketettan (second division) last Saturday. Motyka recorded 9 points and blocked 2 blocks in 22 minutes. Motyka has averaged so far 8.2ppg and 2.8rpg in 16 games.

Group A Goleniow - Domino Inowr. 82-61 Goleniow looked well-organized offensively handing out 28 assists comparing to just 14 passes made by Domino Inowr.'s players. Center Mateusz Fatz (205-C-96) put on an extraordinary performance in the last round for Astoria Bydg., receiving a Eurobasket.com 1Liga Player of the Week award for round 28. There are only two more rounds left in the Regular Season in 1Liga. There was no lack of excitement in the last round games. The round ended with defeat of the leader and favorites losing the games.
