Moncho Lopez of Porto Ferpinta
Porto Ferpinta put an end to Benfica dominance in the Poruguese
basketball. The Dragons overcame their archrivals in the decisive
seventh game of the title series to dethrone Benfica and claim the LPB
title.
Sean Ogirri (188-G-86, college:
Wyoming) came up with 25 points to pace Porto to the triumph.
The Dragons grabbed the lead from the start. Porto posted a 21:17
advantage after ten minutes. The hosts maintained it throughout the
second frame. Porto arrived at the interval up by 5 points 43:38. Things
got even better for Porto in the third stanza. They cleared off to an
11-point distance 66:55 with one quarter remaining. Porto wisely kept
Benfica at distance throughout the final term to clinch the historic
victory at the end.

Duran International, college:
Toledo) produced 20 points and 10 rebounds, while
Julian Terrell (206-F-84, agency:
Hart Sports Mngm, college:

Kentucky) answered with 16 points each for Benfica.

An almost full house in Fafe where most of the people were supporting
CBP/Sentir Penafiel. It was the Yellow&Black team who started
better, with a 12-4 partial in the first five minutes. But after a time
out called by Joao Freitas, the Madeira team finally entered in the
game, recovering until Antonio Monteiro scored a fantastic triple and
closed the first quarter with
CBP/Sentir Penafiel leading 15-10.
CB
CBP/Sentir Penafiel continued to be stronger in the beginning of the
second quarter, with Jeremy Goode directing the game and Manolo Povea
being able to rotate his team. But the madeirenses kept struggling,
showing a good defense and using the experience of their taller players.
The game was getting exciting, with great plays by Londrick Nolen in the
paint, and Nathan Menefee and Jaime Silva showing good shooting success
outside.
At half-time,
CBP/Sentir Penafiel lead by 29-25, in a game very short in points,
but with an interesting balance between two teams of equal value.
Third quarter started with both teams continuing to do a hard job to
stay in the scoreboard fight.
CAB
Madeira went nearer, but
CBP/Sentir Penafiel was great keeping their options. Both teams
showed to be tired, playing their third game in few days, and it was
getting more important to see if Jeremy Goode or Nathan Menefee had some
explosiveness stored to the end of the game. Instead, it was Jaime Silva
who showed up and with a triple shot, put CAB ahead with just 16 seconds
to play in this quarter, ending up 44-41 to the madeirenses.
In the last quarter, we continued to see no team getting much ahead, but
CBP/Sentir Penafiel recovered the lead with 5:30 minutes to play,
while Nolen was in the line. As
CBP/Sentir Penafiel was showing to be a lot better rebounding, it
was giving them the chance to respond to the CAB outside strengths.
CBP/Sentir Penafiel lead didnt last longer, as Menefee scored a
triple to put CAB in front. But the balanced game kept the scoreboard
going from one side to another. Entering the last minute, Fred Gentry
failed a free throw, but CAB got the rebound and Jaime Silva scored a
triple, putting his team with a 4 point lead.
The game kept the same rhythm until the end, with
CBP/Sentir Penafiel having good chances to make it to overtime, but
CAB was strong in the foul line, keeping the lead until the end.
CAB
Madeira gets his first Portuguese Cup, in an emotional final, where
CBP/Sentir Penafiel valorized her opponents win.
Andrais Thornton (203-C-85, college:
NW
Missouri St.) (19 points, 10 rebounds) was the MVP, with Jeremy
Goode (14 points, 3 assists) having a good game. In the winners, Jaime
Silva (19 points, 5 assists), Nathan Menefee (19 points, 6 assists) and
Fred Gentry (14 points, 8 rebounds) were the top contributors.
Libolo - Benfica 109:107 (OT)
Libolo finished Compal SuperCup in the second position. They defeated
Benfica in overtime to improve at 2-1 record. Benfica in the meantime
suffered the third straight defeat.
Reggie Moore (203-F-81, college:
ORU)
fired 41 points to lead the winners.
Benfica got to a slightly better start as they registered a 25:24 lead
at the end of the first quarter. The Portuguese champions cleared off to
a 5-point lead at halftime 47:42. Benfica maintained the lead as they
arrived at the third break up by 8 points 76:68. However Libolo did not
surrender as they erupted for 32 points in the fourth period and
levelled things up at 100. The Angolan team opened the extra period with
six consecutive points to surge ahead. But Benfica answered with seven
straight points of their own to take a 107:106 lead. But
Olimpio Cipriano (194-F-82) exploded with a late triple to bring
Libolo to the victory. Cipriano finished with 30 points, while
Milton Barros (184-G-84) added 16 points for Libolo.
Heshimu Evans (198-F-75, college:
Kentucky) answered with 25 points for Benfica.
Antonio Tavares (183-G-75) delivered 22 points in defeat.

and pulled in front for a 42:41 halftime lead. The Dragons pulled their

minutes into the clash. Benfica put their noses in front in the second
term. They eked out a narrow 36:34 lead at the interval. But Porto

just one point late in regulation when

Benfica held on to the advantage and though Gregory Stempin had a chance
