And we have a new league champion ,its Benfica ,they won the game 5 and last game of the series in the Porto arena. The day started with plenty of emotions for both sides ,Porto with the best record in the regular season and home advantage ,who would have won the game would won the league and Porto did not wanted the visitors to raise the trophy in their own home.
It was a epic battle that marks the history of the last seasons of the league between Porto,Benfica and Ovarense in the middle of the fight for the national title. The fans were tense and players a bit too that shows the low score of the game,56-53 for Benfica .,the first quarter started with a lead for Benfica of 19-17, but the 2nd quarter made the big diference ,Porto only scored 4 points and to what everybody agrees their worse quarter in the entire season killed them in the game for the league title,Benfica went to the locker rooms leading by 11 points, 32-21. In the final of the 3rd quarter it was Porto time ,they didnt wanted to see the trophy escape between their hands and were down 45-39,Carlos Andrade (197-F-78, college: Queens, NC) with 4 minutes left made a triple to short the distance of 1 point with Benfica lead but Seth Deliboa in the next play responded in the same coin and in the lasts minutes Benfica managed the lead they had.
Gregory Stempin (203-F-79, agency: Duran International, college: Toledo) was the best scorer of the game with 16 and for Benfica Ted Scott (188-G-85, agency: Hart Sports Mngm, college: W.Virginia St.) with 14 and Diogo Carreira (180-G-78) with 12 were the leaders,Benfica makes the revenge to Porto that won last season and gets their 23rd title in their history ,Porto comes second with 11.After the game Benfica had to recieve the trophy in the locker rooms because there were some figthts between Porto fans and the police being that the negative side of the game. After the game Carlos Lisboa ,Benfica coach said his team was the best in the playoffs and that the key was the defense.
Reactions after Benfica won the title - May 24, 2012
We mentioned in the recap of the game what happened after the game was over.a battle in the arena between the players ,a healthy and very good basketball battle that led to the Benfica championship winning the game by 3 points but after the game was over there was some fights ,real fights... The game was disputed in the Porto arena and Nuno Marcal (205-F-75) in a interview seen here told the Porto channel that the game was a very good one ,even better then lasts years finals between both teams but after the game he felt very disrespected by the mitic portuguese coach of Benfica ,Carlos Lisboa that you can see in the clip the lack of respect with his movements made to the Porto fans, the link is here
After that Nuno Marcal confronted the coach that he mentioned the words he said couldnt be described on television,Marcal is the Porto captain ,so they felt disrespected and the fans too also seeing in the clip some Benfica players threw shirts to the Porto fans saying Benfica is the champion ,also to see that that Mario Saldanha the league president wasnt even present to award the trophy and the medals to both teams, things went like a roller coaster with Porto fans throwing objects to the arena ,making the Benfica players going to the lockers where they got the trophy, the police people had to stop the fans and some of them said that the police abused the fans with alot of agressiveness for them...
A sad fact from what is known to be the best portuguese basketball player all time and now a coach ,a fact that sad the portuguese basketball.
