Two weeks after the last round, with the Hugo dos Santos Cup being played last week (formerly called the League Cup), the LPB is back! It is the start of the second half of the season and it promises to be an interesting one. Here are the games, our picks, and some insight about the matchups:
Ginasio - Benfica Ginasio is getting stronger, at least on paper, with the signing of Jason Hartford (206-F/C-85). He will be important as an inside presence. The team struggled to contain weight and height on the inside. The bad news is that they are facing the, so far, best team in the league. Coming off a loss in the cup against Porto, Benfica will be ready. A defeat for an experienced team is usually taken as a wake up call for stepping up and raising it up a notch. Will Frisby (203-F/C-81, college: Miami, FL) got injured last week, but this is an experienced and deep roster that has in Heshimu Evans (198-F-75, college: Kentucky) a versatile option for playing inside outside. Pick: Benfica - Even if Ginasio came close to winning at Benfica in the first round, we don't see it happening this time around against a team who should be out to prove something
Academica - Fisica Academica has added a new face in Kalen Grimes (206-C, agency: Hart Sports Mngm, college: Missouri). The club has stated it felt it needed to add height to the team. I believe Academica's problems are a bit deeper than that and, while a strong side, it won't improve significantly. Last year's successful run was made by a team based on a trio of import players lacking height, but excelling in mobility and ability to create their owns shots. It is a solid team, but it is still lagging behind the elite of the league. It faces Fisica, the likely lowest budget in the league. A team that will struggle to win in the 2nd round. Their direct competitors have gotten stronger, and the fantastic performances of Austen Powers (203-F-87, agency: Tank Sports, college: Seattle) have slowed down a bit, maybe due to the fact every opponent is now preparing well for containing him. Pick: Academica - while the team has been struggling to score, it faces, at home, the so far worst team in the league
CAB - Vagos Two new faces in the CAB lineup, David Vik (210-C-72, college: Washington St.) (who has already played a game) and Dwayne Archbold (198-F/G-80, college: Siena). It will be interesting to see if CAB can raise the quality of its game which has been somewhat disappointing so far. After being 5 seconds away from defeating Benfica, Vagos was annihilated by Guimaraes. Raheem Moss (193-G-83, college: Cleveland St.) is predicted to be returning to the lineup, giving them one more option on offense. Pick: CAB - it's once more about home court advantage
Barreirense - Sampaense Barreirense added Anthony Brown (203-F-86, college: Oklahoma St.) to a team that was often killed on the boards during the first half of the season. Sampaense saw the departure of Ricondo Crutchfield (200-F/G-78, agency: Hart Sports Mngm, college: Philadelphia), the third best scorer in the league. While his replacement, Bobby Madison (198-F-82, college: W.Michigan), is a quality player, it is a blow to a team that overperformed in the beginning of the season just to take a hard fall after the first few games. Sampaense is seriously risking a second half of the season with very few wins. Still, a good chance for Sampaense to gain momentum if they can pull it off. Barreirense has shown it can be mighty at home. It has a 3-2 record against the top five teams in the league (granted, only one of those games was away) and a stunning 1-5 against the bottom 6 teams (with only 2 home games). Pick: Barreirense - Its youth leads us to believe it won't be a blow out as the team lacks that killing instinct, when up by double digits, to completely kill a game. Still, at home, it should prevail against a free falling Sampaense
Illiabum - Porto Porto got humbled in Barreiro during the last round. While a defeat is a negative, it can be seen as a positive when a team proudly sees it as an opportunity to correct and improve. It took Porto one week to do just that. Coach Moncho Lopez (agency: Interperformances ) turned things around that fast, and got quality wins in the cup against Guimares, Benfica and Ovarense. Those are just, other than Porto, the three best teams in the league. It was not an easy walk folks, props to Porto for bringing it. It was rumored for a while that Illiabum was going to switch one of its import players and then the team won 3 in a row and those rumors disappeared. While the team suffered step backs after that, it is now a stronger side. Pick: Porto - An experienced group will remember well what last happened when they traveled to play on the road, and will be very focused this time around
Guimaraes - Ovarense I'll admit it, this writer finds it very frustrating to see Ovarense playing. It is a talented group, with good import players lining up with quality Portuguese players. Miguel Miranda (205-F-78)'s production has dramatically decreased. But, most frustrating, is to see the team's total inability to score on offense. It just should not be as bad as it has been. Thankfully for the team's loyal followers (kudos to a great group of fans in a town that truly cares about the game of basketball) it excels on defense. Guimaraes forces a quick tempo, a higher number of ball possessions than usual. Interesting matchup? I think so. But, at the same time, I sense if Guimaraes gets going, it might be a blow out. Pick: Guimaraes - in what, on paper, looks like the most unpredictable game of the week, Guimaraes prevails driven by going on a couple of good runs throughout the game
