Interview with Helder Carvalho - USHiefenech - Feb 18, 2012

POSTED BY:
HUGO CARVALHO
E-mail Hugo:
Hugo's Articles

What led you to migrate?
First of all were the conditions offered by USHiefenech, the second was for to have a new experience in my career

How this opportunity came?
This opportunity came through my agent Hugo Carvalho, who according to coach Joao da Costa, decided it was good for my career to try a new challenge.

How do you regard the invitation?
I faced this invitation very naturally, I was very pleased with the opportunity to play in a different reality.

How this might change your life?
Many things will change, especially financially. My greatest difficulty is to miss my wife and the rest of the family, because otherwise I feel at home. Everything has counterparts, but when I made my decision was aware of everything.

What are the objectives for this season?
All the times I try to establish personal goals, but my biggest challenge is always to the collective level. Despite knowledge of the Luxembourg league at the time was almost nil, at the moment I can say we can still surprise people. The arrival of the portuguese/american coach Joao da Costa was very important.

How has your adjustment to Luxembourg? The basketball? New colleagues?
I was very well received by the committee of the club and can not pass up this opportunity to thank Mr. Jose Tavares, he has been perfect in all aspects. He is a basketball man and help me in my adaptation. Regarding sports, Basketball here is very different, more tactical than physical. My greatest difficulty are the laws of the game because the referees are very slow to read the game. For new colleagues, I can only say good things, always always present and friends.

What is your assessment of the Portuguese basketball?
In Portugal we have good coaches, good players, good directors and good referees, but for basketball there is never money because football takes all!
We must also invest in training for qualified coaches. On the other hand people are a way from basketball. Followed by years people could see basketball in portuguese public television RTP2, but now things are different because basketball was for private channels, and the private channels are normally expensive. So basketball 'disappeared' from public portuguese television and in its place is now handball and futsal. More, the existence of a big financial difference between Porto and Benfica and all other teams, is not positive. Despite all this, I hope that one day things will get better and basketball will be a sport top nationally, as was once.
