LPB Round 21: Ovarense defeats Barreirense in the closest game of the week - Apr 1, 2012

There will be only one (last) round of the Regular Season in LPB.

The most exciting game of round 21 in the LPB took place in Ovarense. This derby game ended with only two-point defeat on the road of 4th placed Barreirense (14-7) to third ranked Ovarense (16-5) 82-80 in the game for the third place. It ended at the same time the five-game winning streak of Barreirense. The hosts were tied at the half but managed to speed up in last two quarters eventually winning the game. Ovarense looked well-organized offensively handing out 25 assists. Guard Jose Miguel Barbosa (176-90) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 16 points and 10 assists for the winners and American center Christopher Lee (206-84, college: S.Carolina St., agency: SDJ Sports) chipped in 11 points, 10 rebounds and 8 assists. Ovarense's coach Mario Leite used a ten-player rotation in such tough game. The best for the losing side was American forward Anthony Hill (204-88, college: Wisc.-Milwaukee) with 17 points and 7 rebounds. Ovarense have an impressive series of five victories in a row. They maintain third place with 16-5 record having just three points less than leader Porto Ferpinta. Barreirense at the other side keeps the fourth position with seven games lost. Ovarense are looking forward to face CAB Madeira (#5) in Funchal in the next round. Barreirense will play on the road against the league's leader FC Porto Ferpinta and is hoping to prove to their supporters that this time they can win.
LPB top team - FC Porto Ferpinta (19-2) added another victory to their record. This time they beat fifth ranked CAB Madeira (13-8) 80-73. The former international forward Carlos Andrade (197-78, college: Queens, NC) nailed a double-double by scoring 12 points and 12 rebounds for the winning side and Gregory Stempin accounted for 18 points. FC Porto Ferpinta's coach Moncho Lopez allowed to play the deep bench players saving starting five for next games. The former international point guard Mario Fernandes (176-82) came up with 21 points and 6 assists (went 7 for 7 at the free throw line) for CAB Madeira in the defeat. Defending champion maintains first place with 19-2 record. CAB Madeira at the other side keeps the fifth position with eight games lost. FC Porto Ferpinta will play against Barreirense (#4) in Barreiro in the next round. CAB Madeira will play on the road against Ovarense and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
Bottom-ranked Ginasio (0-21) is still winless. This time they lost on the road their 21th consecutive match to tenth ranked Barcelos (7-14) 79-63 on Sunday evening. The best player for the winners was Nuno Oliveira who scored 16 points. At the other side the best for losing team was Edson Ferreira who recorded a double-double by scoring 13 points, 10 rebounds and 9 assists. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. The victory was the third consecutive win for Barcelos. Newly promoted Barcelos maintains tenth place with 7-14 record. Ginasio lost their twentieth first game in a row. They still closes the standings. Barcelos will meet at home higher ranked Sampaense (#7) in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Ginasio will play against Academica (#9) in Coimbra and hopes to get finally their first victory.
An interesting game took place in Guimaraes where 6th ranked Lusitania (11-10) was upset on the court of ninth ranked Vitoria SC (8-13) 84-77. It was a good game for Brian Morris who led his team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 29 points and 18 rebounds. Vitoria SC moved-up to seventh place, which they share with Academica and Sampaense. Lusitania at the other side keeps the sixth position with ten games lost. Vitoria SC's next round opponent will be Terceira Basket (#11) in Angra Heroismo.

In the last game of round 21 Sampaense won against Academica on the opponent's court 78-69.



Benfica - Terceira Basket 118-41

Second ranked Benfica (18-3) crushed at home 11th ranked Terceira Basket (4-17) by 77 points 118-41, which is the biggest margin this round on Sunday night. The game without a history. Benfica led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. They dominated on the defensive end, holding Terceira Basket to just 4 points in first quarter and to 14 points in first half. Benfica held Terceira Basket to an opponent 23.5 percent shooting from the field compared to 54.8 percent accuracy of the winners. Benfica forced 26 Terceira Basket turnovers and outrebounded them 50-22 including a 17-3 advantage in offensive rebounds. Benfica looked well-organized offensively handing out 33 assists comparing to just 10 passes made by Terceira Basket's players. Naturalized Cape Verdean power forward Antonio Monteiro (202-89) stepped up and scored 27 points for the winners and swingman Carlos Ferreirinho (200-91) chipped in 18 points. Five Benfica players scored in double figures. Benfica's coach Carlos Lisboa felt very confident that he used entire bench and allowed the starting five to rest. The best for the losing side was American center Monquel Pegues (208-86, college: Tarleton St.) with 12 points and 9 rebounds and forward Frederico Tavares (194-88) scored 9 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists (went 7 for 7 at the free throw line). They outrebounded CAB Madeira 38-19 including 17 on the offensive glass. CAB Madeira was plagued by 29 personal fouls down the stretch. There was a minor upset in Coimbra where 7th ranked Academica (8-13) was defeated by ninth ranked Sampaense (8-13) 78-69 on Saturday. The guests took control from the first minutes by winning the initial quarter 24-18. But Academica won second period 20-18. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Swingman Jorge Sing (192-77) stepped up and scored 20 points, 5 rebounds and 9 assists for the winners and American forward Brian Addison (205-87, college: Buffalo) chipped in 26 points and 6 rebounds. Addison is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market. The best for the losing side was the former international swingman Fernando Sousa (192-81) with 18 points and 5 rebounds and American-Spanish forward Arnette Hallman (199-88) scored 8 points and 12 rebounds.
