Italy celebrated its first win at U20 EuroBasket in Debrecen. They outplayed Portugal 57-48 in the opening game of Group G. Teams in this pool fight for the survival in Division A and only the winner will avoid relegation. Latvia and UK are also placed to this group. Italy celebrated against Portugal thanks to great played first half of the game. Italy made 15-point lead in the first 20 minutes and Portugal closed the gap to 8 pts with one quarter left. However, Italy was strong enough to keep its lead for rest of the way. Virginia Galbiati (173-G-92) scored 14 points for her team and Francesca Dotto (170-PG-93) had 12. Their third scorer was Irene Cigliani (177-F-92) with 8 points. In defeat, Daniela Domingues (176-G/F-92) collected 17 points and 5 rebounds. Jessica Almeida (172-PG-93) scored 13 points and Ines Faustino (170-G-92) netted 9. Italy will play against UK today. Portugal will take on Latvia.

Alges defended their Liga Feminina title. They swept the championship series against Quinta dos Lombos to regain the title. Katie Gearlds (186-G/F-84, college: Purdue) stepped up with 28 points to pace Alges to the decisive 82:76 victory in the third game of the series. Alges did not waste time to surge ahead. The visitors rallied to a 31:16 lead after ten minutes. Lombos were able to slow their opponents down in the second stanza. The hosts trimmed the deficit at 8-point mark at the interval 40:48. Alges were back in the drivers seat in the third period. The visitors ignited a 23:16 run to make it 15-point lead at the final intermission. Quinta dos Lombos fought hard to save the game. They went on a 20:11 spurt in the fourth quarter but came up short of victory at the end. Laura Broomfield (185-F-90, college: N.Carolina) delivered 15 points, while Joana Soeiro (170-PG-95) had 11 points for the winning side. Marcia Costa responded with 18 points for Quinta dos Lombos. Tatiana Keshler chipped in 16 points in the loss.
